I’ve always admired the entire Sharpe series. Interesting personal stories, lots of action and a wry sense of humor. Recently, I’ve watched the 1960s American television series COMBAT about a group of WW2 American combat soldiers fighting in Europe. A different war but fascinating personal stories and themes. Worth a watch and available on RU-vid. Actor Vic Morrow plays the stoic and tough as nails sergeant and Rick Jason the fair minded lieutenant with impossible missions that he gives Morrow. Sounds familiar? And a few wisecracking privates that round out the cast.

If you are into reading and don't mind a bit of fantasy I strongly advise you to read the "Gaunts Ghost"-series from Dan Abnett. You basically have the storyline of an entire regiment. At first it may be confusing, but once you start you really can't finish. A few books in and you actually feel like having strong bonds with soldiers who often only appeared as random footsoldiers earlier, but now got developed into flashed out characters. Also I've read (though I don't know if it is true) that Gaunts Ghost actually is based or rather inspired by Sharpe.

@The505Guys The Rebecque of history was actually Swiss. He was in the French king's Swiss Guard and narrowly survived the 1792 Paris massacre. The following year he joined the Dutch army. He spoke English but apparently not Dutch - the Dutch upper class favoured the French language, which was the international or at least European elite language of the day.

@The505Guys He was in British service for three years (1795-8) and subsequently accompanied the Prince of Orange to England for a time - he seems to have been his "minder", in modern terms. He probably learned English then.

Subtle development of a secondary character in this story. Harper is trying to sell Lt. Doggett a horse using a lot of sales patter. Doggett inspects the horse, Harper wants 5 guineas but Doggett offers 4 and it is accepted by Harper. This shows that Doggett isn't just another foppish fool of an officer who ends up getting killed by being naive or idiotic, like in most Sharpe stories. Later on Doggett stands up to the Prince of Orange and calls him out before ending up marching at Sharpe's side as an officer in the Prince of Wales Own Volunteers; trusted by Sharpe.

This makes me sad, knowing what happens to Hagman and Harris
@Fedaykin24
@Fedaykin24 4 года назад
What I always found sad in this scene is the underlying subtext, whilst Harper is doing well for himself clearly Hagman and Harris are not. The Chosen Men who survived to the end of the campaign went back to England with a small fortune in loot, sadly Hagman and Harris have clearly squandered it away forcing them to come back and search out Sharpe to give them something to do. All they knew how to do was Soldiering, Hagman was an illiterate poacher and Harris a gambler neither capable of spending what they had gained wisely then all of a sudden Napoleon escapes and reforms his Army giving them a purpose again.

As far as I'm aware, Hagman and Harris rode off into the sunset and lived a long and happy life, and that's how I'll always see it!
