In this video, I demonstrate the best way for most folks to get better knife edges when sharpening.
I think the most important thing is to slow down. Speed in inexperienced hands will kill your knife's edge.
I think the best technique when starting out is by doing single edge trailing passes on your stone. And also swapping the medium grit stone for a coarser stone. This will save you money and time as your sessions will get significantly shorter and typically coarse grit stones are cheaper and are rated as 'Splash and Go's' so no soaking required.
Once you are able to cut paper towel straight off of the coarse grit and strop, then we can start taking a crack at medium grit stones.

P.S. I am sure someone will ask about my strop. Its a two sided strop. One side with coarse material the other with leather. I do use compound in both and I found the coarse side works quite well with removing the burr. If you don't have a strop don't worry. Just use an old pair of jeans. Something coarse that can remove the burr. You could also use an old leather belt as well as a strop. You don't have to go out and buy a strop if you don't want to--is my point.
P.P.S I know the stones are dry. And I am ignoring all comments that complain about it.
