Sharpen Lathe Chisels And Knives On A 1x30 Sander! - Vevor - Not Woodturning

I have always sharpened kitchen knives on a sanding belt, freehand. The problem is, I seldom remember to bring them all the way out to the shop. This compact, lightweight sander provides just the solution. I can keep this at the house and easily sharpen them at a moments notice. I found that it also does a great job sharpening lathe chisels, making it a great choice for woodturners!

Suggestion for you. Get a magnet (Harbor Freight for a buck or two) and place it just below the plate or on the plate and it will grab most of the very fine metal particles that you do not want to breath or put in the air. If you put a little wax paper over the magnet, you can just remove the wax paper and drop in the trash. Very easy and useful thing for grinders or sanders.

Hi Phil! I have the same size belt sander. I took a belt that had nearly all the grit worn off, turned it inside out, reinstalled it and put polishing compound on it. Does a great job when you just need a little honing to bring back an edge. Great video 👍

I’m the same as you were. I’ve never taken these small belt sanders very seriously, but I think you’re right . In a limited way they can have a useful purpose. I like what this one is capable of! I’m thinking along the same lines with my band saw. There are many times I need to cut a small piece with a finer blade than what I use to trim bowl blanks. I’m about to get a 9 inch band saw for only that purpose. Thanks for showing your method of doing things. Cheers, Rick

Hi Phil, in Australia, Vevor Australia also offers a “950W Double Axis Bench Belt Sander Grinding Machine Variable Speed Grinder”. Two belts, running one each side of the motor, without the disk. Belt size is 40mm x 680mm and for us, it’s 220v. Belts hard to find in fine grits, but 50 x 686 are standard, and should be easy enough to slice down. Mine arrives this week!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Hmmm, very interesting, Peter! I'll be looking that up! 😊
@josephkerley363
@josephkerley363 Год назад
I recently acquired one of those. It sharpens really well. Gotta be careful, at the speed it runs you can easily overheat your edge. I keep a bucket or can of water handy when I sharpen to keep it cool The higher grit belts will polish that edge razor sharp.

Agreed on all points, Joseph! 😊

Hi Phil I've been sharpening knives, chisels and lathe tools on my old 2x42 craftsman sander for years. I keep belts to 5000 in stock if I want to go that fine, usually sharpen at 800 or a 1000 grit. My in house sharpening set up is a block of wood with sandpaper from 400 to 2000 grit. My hunting knives are scary sharp and the edge will skin and quarter an elk. I don't own a grinder, 80 grit aluminum oxide belt on my sander will do anything a grinder will.

Thanks, Jim! Sounds like you have it figured out! 😊

OMG, on a WEDNESDAY....Thank You Phil... Well, when it comes to the "correct" sharpening technique, wow. As many different styles as there are craftsmen and some are extremely opinionated in that their way or no way, HA. I think back to before electricity and the exceptional craftsmen doing incredible work and I suppose they were as strong willed as the craftsmen of today. I guess it mostly comes down to just plain practice. Those old craftsmen sitting with the foot operated, out of round, large grinding stone compared to today. Nice to see you on a Wed. and I look forward to your show tomorrow, Thursday...... TM

Sanding belts work well for sharpening. I have the Sorby Pro Edge that I use for all my turning chisels and gouges. It also has a guide for knives that work well. The 2000 grit equivalent is great for most kitchen knives. I also have a couple of Japanese knives that I sharpen on a wet stone to 8000 grit equivalent - a mirror finish and razor sharp!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Sounds like you are an expert, Bob! 😊
@bobh5616
@bobh5616 Год назад
No - definitely not an expert! I checked out the price of a low speed grinder with decent grinding wheels plus a sharpening jig, and it was about the same price as the Sorby Pro Edge, so I went with the simplest one to use. Best decision I ever made for wood turning as I can get repeatable and acceptable edges on my tools.
