That’s actually very interesting, and amazing specs. I was thinking you’re not going to 1000 grit or 2000 or more interesting to know that some kinds of steel don’t react as well too high polish and high levels of whetstone action good to know!!!

I could be wrong and please correct me if so. I think 154cm is great, made originally for ball bearing use in aircraft engines in the 50's. I like the fact that it is already high carbide and is the only steel I know of that doesn't get any better in powder formulation. It's a great all round serviceable blade steel. I think that's why we see it used so much in side autos and tactical formats

Just got a pro tech godson that’s 154cm and I’ve never sharpened a knife before. I’d love to know which sharpener is best for beginners and leaves little room for user error if possible. My grandpa passed not too long ago and he has a wet stone that id love to learn how to use eventually.

Hi Jarred , I’m looking into gunny juice , what strop do you recommend? Kangaroo? do you recommend the whole set , I believe they go from .25 all the way to 12 micron , what one do you use or recommend? Thanks
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
You can get all of them but you don't have to, any Strop will work but the dense strops work best, like beaver craft leather, the black stuff, kangaroo leather might work well also, my most recommended is 6 micron it's the most versatile, but if your wanting a polish from it then you need a bunch of them from 15 micron to .25 micron

Hi... yes I have trouble too on sharpening all my Kansept blade with 154cm steel to a fine edge... it doesn't do well for fine and polished edge and I don't have problems with other steels on my Sandvik 14c28n, S35VN, S45VN and M390 (btw, all these steel i learn sharpening from most of your videos anyway and i really appreciate you for that 😄)... so goes back to the 154cm steels, can you explain why does 154cm don't takes good fine edge? Thanks

I’m not sure if you’ve done it yet, but could you break down the steels that are good toothy and the ones that are good polished? I’d be interested to learn. Also, what makes different steels better at different grits? I just figured they’d all be best polished.

@@NeevesKnivesalso kinda went hog wild this week and bought a few knives. Got the Kizer vanguard origional 20cv in brown/gold carbon, Kizer fiest xl micarta in 154cm, Kansept main street m390 with arctic storm fat carbon and a microtech MSI apocalyptic with the frn scales. Before that my only knife was a CJRB Riff in the AR-RPM9. I bought all these because they're super cool but also because watching your videos made me want to expierence/test different steels and learn to sharpen them. Just wanted to say thanks, your videos got me into this hobby and I'm super happy to learn a ton.

My Emerson has no teeth if I sharpen on fine grit. I go medium and strop. It's weird though because I have a buddy that is deep into the weeds with Benchmade. His EDC is a 154Cm material, and it takes a pretty fine edge. Maybe it's an edge geometry thing, but I'm not really sure.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
Geometry is a huge thing, same with heat treatment, and 154 cm in some cases can take a decent fine edge but after use it gets slick pretty quickly, so I find in most cases not all but most that a medium grit edge does best, especially if you look at the amount of bite the 600 to 1k grit has vs a mirror edge, the medium grit has a lot more

Paper is for testing scissors. Everyone does the paper thing, but nobody shaves paper w/ their edc. Test using everyday cutting
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
It's just showing a good edge and clean apex, it's mostly how well it does it and the sound, professionals can hear the difference. Because an edge is for the entrance of a cut the blades geometry is for passing through, so cutting most things won't say much about the edge unless it's only about the edge, like paper, hair, paper towel, some fruits exc..

Yeah I just got the 10v mini recently with micarta and the damn thing refuses to lock upp smh I have to legit give it all the wrost I can to MAKE it lock in order for the blade to lock open I've cut myself so damn Manu times on this knife already from thinking it was locked up and NOPE where's the band-aid lol because the 10v takes a wicked edge I just wish the damn thing would lock and there was so much blade play side to side when I got it and I bought it from bladeHQ 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ still wouldn't get rid of it but it sucks never knowing if the blade is locked or not, eventually I'll disassemble it and grind down the ramp a bit so the lock bar actually grabs it...

Why doesn’t 154CM take a polished edge? What happens to it?
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
It takes a great polish, but it has the potential to lose its bite, there's a bunch of steels that do that and it can be counter productive if you want your edge to have a lot of bite into materials, after little use they can get slick and slip out of cuts cpm 154 is even worse at high grits
