A masterclass in sharpening. Thanks for that. I need to do my wee puuko as I dinked the blade with the end of a strap and took out a tiny chip. I nearly cried. Cheers
Rob I used this method to redo my blade on the Mark2 in O1 I got rid of the chips. I got the DMT in coarse and extra coarse and a fine one then I used the micro mesh strops you're a master at this ! Thank you for the advice
Great vid! I never really strop my scandi knives hard for fear of convexing them. Beautiful job. Nice stones, they put my natural arkansas to shame. #Respectable
It takes me a quite few hours to do that (sometimes around 4-6) but the stones I am using are small, 1 inch by 6 inches and I go through more stones/grids. Also, I do the strokes more slowly as I am obsessed about keeping the grind line as crisp as possible. I guess with more practice strokes could get faster. But the edge comes out hair whittling sharp and mirror polished at the end, which I think worth it. Nothing feels better than using a VERY sharp knife. I use Naniwa Chosera stones for anything does not have vanadium carbide in it, or else I use the CBN and Diamond stones.
6"X2" is big enough for utility knife sharpening and you can make a smaller double sided set for field use. I also carry some in my carving kit with my round strop for sharpening hook knives. It's versatile stuff.
Great vid mate,I use DMT a lot myself,I even sell them because I know the Dutch importer personally, can’t beat them especially for scandi grind knives, great tip about the eraser tough, didn’t know that😱
Thanks for the video. Very easy to follow. I wish I had seen this years ago. I was never very good at sharpening blades. Through years of trial and error, I’ve settled on a very similar method to this. I use the DMT stones primarily, and a leather strop. Sometimes I will use the finer mesh papers between also.
Hi Rob, super job putting the skandi bevel back, and I think the cost is very reasonable considering the handwork and skill involved, stay safe mate , best wishe's to you and your's, looking forward to the next one , it's good having your videos to watch during lockdown, many thanks for your time. Never had much luck getting a burr - and now I think I know why. Shaving and carving paper is rarely a problem, but that burr has always eluded me - I'll keep your advice in mind the next time I have to sharpen! Cheers buddy!
@@RobEvansWoodsman I'm approaching that time in my life when I can't remember what I had for breakfast - recalling something from that long ago will need quite a big nudge!
Nice result. Just ordered the 10" EF/F and C/EC plates yesterday. I like the idea of being able to finish on the micro mesh, much better than spending another $75 on a whetstone. Think CBN emulsion on strop would achieve similar results? Or is is more of an in-between step? Looks like this micro mesh may be similar to something like 3M lapping sheets. Havent tried the 3M stuff either, but seems like it may be a good, very similar, option. Not sure what the micro mesh is using for abrasive, but the 3M is aluminum oxide.
Hello again rob,I watched the videos last night mate so just a couple of questions.is that DMT stone the duosharp plus fine/course?aside from stropping is that DMT stone all I need to get me away?inclusive of the magnabase as well I’m thinking.
@@RobEvansWoodsman time to make a purchase 👍 do you do affiliate links or anything?you don’t seem the type but if you do then supporting the channel is something I’d like to do.
I have no idea what that is!!! I'm probably going to do paetreon in the future and I'll give away a knife a month but that'll probably be next year. It'll be an opportunity for people to get in first with my knife sales aswel.
@@RobEvansWoodsman affiliate links are basically a deal between you and let’s say the knives and tools website where you can direct your viewers to items you use in your videos on their website and you would be paid a small commission for sending us in their direction.it doesn’t cost us anymore that way so no reason for us not use your links.I would imagine it won’t be long before certain websites actually start seeking you out to do business.
I wish it wasn't such an ordeal to ship over seas. I have a scandi knife that has an uneven bevel..wider on one side than the other. I'd love to have you fix it for me, but the shipping probably would cost as much as your labor charge, lol.
Finally picked up some of the proper micromesh, seems like an awesome product so far. Not sure what kind of life to expect out of them yet. I do like the 3M lapping films, and they definitely will still be used for my pocket knives, but this mesh combined with foam / leather makes a better convex sharpener imo. Do you remove the swarf from your mesh in any particular way? Do you even bother? Tend to use them more wet or dry? You measuring the life of em in hours/days/weeks/months? Thanks for turning me onto em
What is the reason for not putting a choil on a knife blade? Is it aesthetic preference or is there any other reason not to have it? I can only see benefits, even if it's just a small one. What is your thoughts on this RobEvans?
Great video Rob... You mentioned on your video “sharpening your SRK in field” that you use an ice bear stone for sharpening Scandi blades in the field . What stone do you use? Also what would be the best way to smooth a DC3? Thank you for taking the time in making these videos, very helpful.
I don't use the cut down icebear in the field these days I use DMT folders, there's a recent camping video where I field sharpen my friends scandi with these. I'm quite surprised I said I field sharpen on water stones, haven't don't that in years. If s dc3 is dished on the diamond side then it's fit for the bin. On the ceramic side I would assume that only diamonds and hard enough to flatten it, buy another one it'll be less bother !
Hey Rob, love the channel! I've heard you discuss in this & previous video's that you make your own knives! Do you have a website or are you on Etsy as I'd be interested in purchasing one from you or maybe getting a custom one made! Wont be till after Christmas but I'd love to have a gander if possible? Keep up the good work Rob 👍😁☘ Much love from Éire. Regards, Andrew.
I often use an eraser block , you can buy them from an engineering supplier or if you can still find one a ball point pen eraser. Clean water and a nail brush also work fine.
I never really appreciated the skill, effort and time involved .... In the past with a stubborn blade, ive taken it to a key cutters and had an edge put on, (stop frowning) i now realize having an edge isn't really sharpening, and how hap hazard it is, (i said stop frowning, ... i was young stupid and a cheap knife)
I'm not frowning I'm just surprised that a key cutters sharpen knives. I was taught at quite s young age to sharpen by my dad who was a joiner , I can imagine it being a difficult and fiddly challenge coming at it without being shown. I am a fussy bugger with my knives.
I’m a free hand beginner and having issues maintaining the bevel flat to the stone once the blade curves. What tips does anyone have? I’m convinced I can get this right but damn it’s discouraging sometimes.
Practice mate, keep your left hand (if you're right handed) the same hight through the process and only move the height of your right hand which will be on the handle.
@@pAdDy111hDH I sharpen one up in this video, it's difficult to maintain the angle when you are away from flat surfaces and good stones. Stropping sets are the best but slow way in the field ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qrlDT4SgNl0.html
@@RobEvansWoodsman I understand. I guess it‘s also really difficult to hold the sharpener in one hand and at the same time the knife in the other hand. Thanks a lot for this information, Rob 👍
Hi Rob what’s your thoughts on the lansky sharpening system on scandi Grinds? Also do you use the dmt extra course stone? I do a lot of sharpening of straight razors with synthetics and naturals which are flattened with the 400grit atoma. Any idea how the atoma compares to the dmt?
Yeah thats the one... i thought as much, good for kitchen knives etc... in that case i shall get the dmt stones and a folder :-) you should get commission from dmt etc... by the way have you used the trend diamond stones? I assume dmt are better?
@@RobEvansWoodsman thanks Rob! You kinda offer to sharpen knives in the video.. is it possible you could tidy mine up? I’m gonna invest in DMT stones and do it myself eventually, but not until I can afford it. I had a go a while ago with some waterstones but ended up f#cking up the bevel 😣
Not cheap but if you're doing a lot of sharpening they are awesome, 6"X2" are big enough for a utility knife. I sharpened Nick's bushtool up with my folders on s previous video. Awkward but doable.
