This is wonderful! I'm a novice at carving, but an expert in finishing, gesso, water-gilding, etc. I'm trying to pick up woodcarving for replicating medieval polychrome sculpture. I spent yesterday repeatedly ruining a V-chisel, and only toward the end discovered the trick of rounding the point. *sigh* If only I'd found this earlier, I'd have one more chisel at factory-length!

Never knew that the "V" tool is not lifted from the diamond on either the forward or the back stroke. Learned something today. Thanks!

The rectangular format was much better to follow visually. It also mimics sight reading and will transfer more readily. The only other enhancement might be to use different tones for the different subdivisions. Thanks. This was definitely worth the while.

Ive been umming and arghring about how to deal with a chipped edge. Thanks for the clue up. V tools should come with a mental health warning. Failure to sharpen correctly may cause ego loss and defeatism. Great instructions btw.

Mary May the sharper i was getting it the less control i had its been driving up the wall. People always say its two chisels stuck togather, simple. They never tell you the bond is a tiny gouge.

Nice video. I have one question about V chisel: I just start interesting about woodcarving so I bought Pfeil 15/6 45° chisel. A friend of mine says that this chisel (with 45° angle) is for soft wood and if I use it on hard wood it will break. Chisel is brend new, never sharpen. What is your opinion about this?

Some great tips . I have a question , I bought a small v tool at a garage sale this summer.It is a swiss made 13/2 . It had a chip in it , I ground the chip out and tried to resharpen it but I can't get it to take the right shape. It all ways comes to a point. Before I throw it out do you have any suggestions.
@marymay155
@marymay155 8 лет назад
+glen mckelvey that tool is a 2mm v-chisel, which is difficult to sharpen simply because of the small size (along with the fact that v-chisels are just plain difficult to sharpen). If you try and follow the steps that I show for a larger one, you should be able to get it sharp. The difficulty is, the smaller the size, the easier it is to get crooked. The slight radius on the corner is nearly non-existent because of the size. Another difficulty is that a slip stone may not fit completely into the inside of the tool. Also, since it is an older chisel it may have already been ground past its temper (sometimes only 1/4" of the end is tempered). If that is the case, then it will need to be re-tempered. Don't give up! Be very patent and do each step completely and hopefully it will get sharp. Otherwise, it might be time to go shopping :)

I don't agree with the comments here. None of the sharpening vids are useful. Just her talking and showing some carving from years ago. I watched the whole vid saying Stop wasting my time and talking and do the thing please.
