Venev stones are the greatest. You still need the technique but they make sharpening so much easier. I started on a smiths tri-stone years ago and it's amazing how far sharpening abrasives have come in the past 5 years. It's a good time to be in the knife sharpening game. Good stuff, keep pushing these vids out!

Great video and info dude. It's only a matter of time before we can sharpen our stones with our knives :/ Cheers mate. *edit: The thing to look for with diamond stones is mono-crystals, not poly. Mono will retain their claimed "grit" rating over time as poly will fracture and become "coarser".

I find as long as your using diamonds its just as easy as anything else, so if your having a hard time with s30v then it will be the same, if s30v is easy then this will be as well, just start with a low grt make sure its diamond, get your edge from the first stone, the rest is cake

Question about a guided system: after using diamond stones (up to 600 grit, which is all I have) on a high carbon-steel, is it better to use the higher grit ceramic stones like a lapping film?
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 3 года назад
No i personally wouldnt, you can but it seems to lose the bite that you want from your edge, high carbide steels do good because of the carbides, atleast thats what ive noticed, also it seems that carbon steels do better on aluminum oxide stones and natural stones than diamonds, usually

Yeah i know what you mean, if you do wind up getting them let me know and since you already have the diamonds you can get two stones which will get you the same, its 4 stobes because they are double sided but that way you dont spend the money on the one that you can already replicate

Hi Jared very good video.I noticed on ur more course stones ur working edge in both directions.Definately faster.What is ur opine on fine stones taking one slice per side not building a burr if ur not going to any finer stone. I just received Work Sharp K.O. with blade grinder attachment,per ur recommendation.Went back and rewatched ur 2nd vid on subject.Looking forward to ur long term update.Keep up great work
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 3 года назад
Awesome! And im definitely going to do that video soon, and i do single passes towards the end especially if im really feeling my angle, and am doing a great job on repeating my angle, and at the end i always do a few one pass and flip one pass and flip, to knock the burr off. But the back and forth sometimes can help you repeat your angle without changing, so as long as your keeping your angle it doesnt matter, sometimes i find better results from single passes and sometimes from back n forth

You show how to get the back of the bevel free hand what do you do in that situation with a fixed angle system if you only just got the edge of the tip?
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 7 месяцев назад
So I'm not a 100% on the question but if you are missing or not hitting the very tip near the apex or back of bevel you just have to keep going, sometimes it can be like a pot hole where it's not going to come out without removing alot of steel, if there's a pot hole in a table and you are sanding it down you would have to sand the entire surface down until its level, in most cases I say leave it and get it on the second or third Sharpening no need to waste steel when it's not going to effect much, if that is what you are asking
@roylerroycerickson
@roylerroycerickson 7 месяцев назад
Well i was sharpening a knife the other day using fixed angle and got a burr right along the edge including the tip but when i looked near the tip it hadnt reached the back of the bevel. It looked a bit like yours in this video before you went and finished it off saying the tip was bugging you. Thanks for the reply. Think i just need to practice more but i find the fixed angles seem to waste more knife

Is there an advantage to hand sharpening or is it more of a personal preference thing? I use a Lanski system, but I still novice. Never tried to hand sharpen.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 3 года назад
Yes and no, edges can be just as good, it takes a while to get really good, but imo its very convenient, i can sharpen almost anything on almost anything, and it really gives you a feeling for issues and how to fix them by hand, also with honing, most dont hone very well, but when you freehand its second nature, but theres benifits to both, but its easy to be very good with a system, I also love the nostalgia

I havent tried those yet, but hopefully will in future, but honestly no steel realky gives me trouble, thick grinds and knives that are super thick bte, are more of a problem than the steel itself, the hardest times ive had with steel was on cheap gastation knives with crap heat treat on budget steels, also i ran into s35vn with a horrible heat treat before that was like sharpening play doh but steels with a good heat treat are always pretty easy, as long as you use the right stones

It takes practice and a little patience. I used to use a KME because I couldn't freehand worth a damn. I finally made up my mind I was going to learn, so I took a few budget blades, and just started practicing. I finally got it, and now, I almost never use my KME anymore. It took me a bit, but I was determined to do it, so I stuck with it, and now, I wouldn't say I'm as good as Jared, but I'm getting good sharp edges, and I know the more I do it, the better I'll get. I bought some diamond stones, because I am not a real patient man, so I wanted to use stones that cut fast. Plus, I have a lot of knives in premium steels, so I knew I'd need diamonds anyway, once I felt comfortable to do more expensive knives.Don't get frustrated and give up. You'll get it eventually, just practice on budget blades till you get it. Buy yourself a couple Ganzo's or something you can live with if you mess up your bevel until you start getting the hang of it it.
