This is an unexpected and much appreciated tweak to your content. You normally just show and critique tools on your channel. This is the first time I have seen you actually provide tips and technique for their use. You clearly have a great deal of expertise in a number of areas and your technique tips are much appreciated. Keep them coming!

I’ve been watching you for months. I think you’re great and honestly one of my favourite channels. I’m wondering though, when is the very very last best tool as you’re costing me a fair amount 😬

The puck in the leather case is a Japanese water stone. When used correctly, they work very well. They are meant to be used with water. First the stone should be soaked in water for 5 or 10 minutes, until the air bubbles stop rising. Then water should be added to the surface occasionally while using it. The stone is made to be easily ground away to continually expose new grit for sharpening. The water, grit and ground metal makes a slurry (called swarf) which helps in the sharpening. You can rinse the swarf off occasionally during use if you like. If water is not used, the stone can get clogged quickly. In the field, soak the stone if you can, but at least put water on the surface. Rinse it off when you're done. Similaly, a Lansky puck is meant to be used with honing oil.

The same stones you use for a knife work just as well. Better to me, and I already have a huge amount of options. The stones meant for axes are usually very coarse. The “fine” grit is usually 2-400 grit. That’s not fine.

Baryonyx knife co, makes an 8$ axe “puck” that I prefer over most others only downside is it’s a single grit.

I got the Lansky Puck Dual Grit Sharpener and found that it perfectly fits into the Maxpedition Round Can Case! A couple of interesting Lansky sharpeners and their Puck covers my needs.

Thanks for the puck vid. I put my Lansky in an old thick sock in my pack for transport. Good for machetes too !

Aren't you supposed to keep the pucks wet during use?

It's not very portable but you can't beat a good belt grinder/sander for sharpening & repairing axes.

Yes. I've got a 1" wide Delta belt sander I use for that purpose all the time.

I've been fighting with a straight razor that doesn't want to sharpen for a couple of days now. With how many knife sharpeners there are in the market do you have a preferred method of sharpening knives?
