I just want to thank you guys at Projects in Metal. I actually work in a machine shop, operating CNC machines. I've been in the machining trade for almost 5 years now but I have NEVER understood how to properly sharpen a drill. I think I get it now! The problem I've had jumping into work without any formal training is I don't know how to do things like this and no one has the patience to teach me while they're busy doing their job. Tomorrow I'll take a stab at it.

Well done. When I saw Part 1 I thought "Oh no another sales pitch." In Part 2 you have clearly explained the thinking behind the method. I noticed that the chipped drill you sharpened had the web thinned. Will you be showing how that is done? Since I use home shop equipment now I find that reducing the web on 1/4" up to 1/2" bits allows me to make one pass holes even with reduced power machines.

Thanks for the feedback. I think Barry rounds off the clearance lip just because it makes it look nice and finished. He mentions in the video that you don't want facets. Facets don't really hurt anything (at least not anything that I can think of), they just look bad.

Muhaa Haloa It could be because your wheel needs dressed as mine does :) That can make it a lot harder. I dont know where the heck my dresser went. He's got an ideal set up with that nice sturdy rest and wide wheel. The one I use is only 1" thick and a flimsy rest.

You're welcome. I'm glad you found the videos instructional and helpful. Now you don't have to buy new drills! Although I still buy replacement small drills (under 1/8") because they are a pain to sharpen. But they are cheap, so I don't worry about resharpening them, or I use a drill doctor.

Wow! U explained everything so clear and i really enjoy this video clip. From now on, I will sharpen my drill bits in your way. By the way, what should be the grit of your stone for sharpening? I ask bcoz mine is very coarse but yours seems very fine one.
@MegaLostOne
@MegaLostOne 3 года назад
There is another trick with that gauge I never see used or mentioned. The point of the bit across the web there will be an angle, if you lay the gauge across the cutting edge the angle across the web should be close to the angle of the gauge so the point can push material out of the way, If the angle across the web is to straight it won't push metal out of the way and the tip of the drill bit doesn't want to cut.

@detvardasatanme Glad the video helped! Grinding the heel is critical. You don't need to grind a lot away, just enough so that the heel doesn't interfere with the cutting action of the lips. We remove quite a bit of the heel in the video, more than is necessary. But we did so to illustrate the process.

That's true, long sleeves can be dangerous in the shop. I generally wear short sleeve carhartt shirts and (if it's really cold) a carhartt vest. It's safer to heat the shop than it is to wear long sleeves. However, I'm not generally worried about long sleeves around the grinder. I'm more worried about them around the lathe, mill, or any other machine with rotating parts that can snag the sleeves.

That's the way I was shown many long years ago. probably before you were born, an then you get some guys telling you you have to do it on a flat wheel But with the side of a flat wheel you never get an even cut, But don't explain that to these young guys, they know it all. I been trying to find a drill gauge for quite a while, so where can I get one in local stores,

if you want a quick measuring tool you can put two nuts beside eachother, itll be a 120 included angle but thats probably close enough for you if you have to use that trick! also you didnt cool it enough you can see at the end you lose the temper on the cutting edge that bit will dull quickly
@alfredoeduardo1974

It is also necessary to mention that it is a must to use a steady and sturdy bench grinder, cheap ones will vibrate and won´t perform correctly.

@devers6 Glad you found the video helpful! I have a Drill Doctor as well, but this technique is still useful to master. For one thing, you can use it with drills that are too large for your Drill Doc, and for another, you can use the skill to impress your machinist friends! Sharpening end mills by hand? I wish I was that skilled! However, we may be reviewing an end mill sharpening machine down the road, so be sure to subscribe or check back often.

I'm pretty sure the wheels are aluminum oxide. They are old (they are huge so they haven't been replaced in years) so I'm not positive. If you're grinding HSS drills aluminum oxide works well. If you're grinding carbide drills you'll need a silicon carbide ("green") wheel.
@JaakkoF
@JaakkoF 11 лет назад
Nice videos, but you can't determine the proper clearance angle from looking at the side of the drill, as you are looking at a curved surface, so it is more of a compound angle. Easiest is to look at your chisel line angle in relation to your cutting edges, it should be around 120-135 degrees. Also, you didn't have to grind that rounding off, you could have ground the tips of the cutting edges with a primary clearance angle, makes it last longer and makes a smoother and more round hole.

davs have augers. if i ground a drill that made curly chips it clogs the auger and the machine fills with chips and its smash-up time lol by changing the angle on the cutting edge you decide by negative or positive what chips to make. nagative angle makes broken up chips. positive angle makes curly chips which is ok for acme or tri-ways, no good for davs.

I use TORMEK - wet grinding wheel - never burn and keeps the perfect angle AND gives me 4 faceted bits - not 2 (chisel pointed) - AND you can touch the stone and it will not harm you as it's rotation is very slow. To sharpen a drill bit by hand takes years of practice IF ! That's why some bits have more facets than a diamond ! AND with TORMEK - no need for safety glasses !

And he is just dunking it so it wont burn him. Drills are made of high-speed steel which means they will become too hot to hold way before any overheating can occur.
@NMranchhand
@NMranchhand 7 лет назад
Yes, water. If the drill tip gets too hot, as indicated by its color (blue at about 600F) it will loose its hardness and be unable to cut through other steels and be useless. The steel the drill is made of is shaped while soft then heated cherry red (about 2200F) and plunged into cold water to make it much harder than all other steels. But then it was very brittle, so it was baked in an oven at 400F for about 20 min. to "draw" some of that hardness out of it in exchange for some flexibility, leaving it both very hard but also durable: tempered steel. That process would have to be repeated in its entirety to save the drill if he were to get it too hot. Alternatively, he could just grind off all the parts that turned blue but the it's like grinding your pencils so short until there's little point left (pun intended).
