Hey Chieftain, Hank here from the NMMV. I want to thank you so much for the shoutout here. It was in fact not only my first time being on camera- but also my first time ever writing the script for a video like that. It's a big regret of mine for the occasional slip of the tongue and the few things I left out, like leaving out a big point about moving Shermans overseas. (And don't get me started on pronouncing "LIMA" incorrectly... how could I have known! haha.) Regardless, I've learned a lot from the responses to that video and the reactions of the community. I hope the next vid we make at the NMMV is better as a result. Your complements were very kind, and I appreciate you taking time off your vacation to talk about all this, both me and Bovington. I'd say it depends on the circumstances and where the round hits the vehicles. There is enough accounts of all crew getting out of a tank when it got disabled and then there are enough accounts were the full crew didnt make it out and the whole tank exploded and the turret was blown off. And then there is the majority of inbetween these to extremes. Several crewmates, atleast one, are injured or killed right away and cannot evacuate the tank an only part of the crew manage to escape and move on from their. A lot of different fates of ordinary peoples who happend to end up in a bad situation.

@XerrolAvengerII
@XerrolAvengerII 5 месяцев назад
I think it's mostly a problem of framing. Many videos about the sherman are framed as 'apologizing' for the tanks 'poor performance' with statements like, but it's reliable, or it's cheap to make, or we had 4 times as many, or we had to send it all over the world and couldn't just stick it on a train back to the factory. It's like apologizing for commuter cars being crushable by a monster truck, when a commuter car is objectively a better vehicle 99.9% of the time.

Would just like to say, specifications aren't the end-all, be-all: a tank can have armor as thick as you please, and that doesn't matter much at all if it's being made by somebody who can't weld deep enough to stop the seams from bursting when hit by an HE shell.

Chieftain becomes crafted from pure obstrontium whenever Shermans are put down and rightly so. Sherman was an ace tank. They might have been shot up a lot but the crews usually got out to fight another day. I heard of one crew that went through three in a day. In fact wasn't that war daddys crew? Im sure I heard that story about them. Anyway thanks for the vid sir.

I like to imagine that people call Shermans death traps because the crews managed to escape and complain about it, meanwhile over in the Eastern front you don't get as many stories claiming the T-34's lit up like a tinderbox because the crews all died before they could even complain about how "it's a death trap".

I really hope that one day the myths surrounding the Sherman can be dispelled for good. Unfortunately it often feels like an uphill battle because for every video discussing the myths you have a dozen which just repeat the same claims we've seen for decades. It's hard to even criticize the people making them because many rely on a fairly surface level knowledge of tanks in general so it's understandable why they make those mistakes.
@chaosXP3RT
@chaosXP3RT 5 месяцев назад
It just bugs me that the Sherman tank has been stuck in the mind of the greater public as a poor tank. I genuinely believe the Sherman was the best all-around tank of WWII and its underappreciated. It doesn't help that the History Channel had a record of underselling the Sherman to make the stories more dramatic. But a lot of people are left with the impression that the Sherman only stuck around so long because the US Army was too cheap to make anything better or that the Sherman was only good because it could be mass produced. Now that doesn't mean that Sherman was the best tank for every situation or that other tanks didn't preform certain tasks better than the Sherman, but it's always disappointing when any piece of media reinforces the negative sterotypes of the Sherman in WWII

Totally agreed and with the Bovington vid which I enjoyed didn't elobarate on the Sherman tanks post war which it still excelled. In Korea it did well agianst the Russian supplied T34/85 tank with getting the most tank to loss ratio over the better M26 Pershing and M46 Patton tank. When the Isrealis upgraded them to the M50 and M51 Super Sherman which defeated Soviet T62 MBTs in the 1973 Yom Kuppur war. Used in other conflicts also notable on both side in the Indo Pak wars ect. It was overall a great tank and deserves more respect. During WW2 the US was aware that it would come up agianst tanks and thought that it would only encounter Panzer 3s and Panzer 4s which it did and defeated.

Its far better now than it was 20 years ago when internet was young. What annoyes me it the "Hetzer was a good vehicle" internet myth. It was a "last ditch" vehicle that was inferior to StuG III and it showed up late in the war (unlike the stuff it is compared to like StugIII, M10 or SU76) alongside Jagdpanther, SU-100, M-18. It wasnt even a good tank destroyer (average describes it better), but at other tasks that Stugs or SU-76 could do it was even worst.

I don't know where this perception comes from. In Ohio, my school mascot was a Sherman (of course, the actual tank out front was an M48) and the general perception is that it was good. Of course, we still build Bradleys and Abrams there, so maybe it's just sour grapes from formerly tank-producing states...

Cat killing wasnt that difficult anyways : The Wehrmacht had pamphlets/operations guides and diagrams for their tankers informing them about the strength and warning them about the weaknessess of their tanks. The same goes for enemy tanks. And that includes their weakness or not towards artillery concerning roof/top armour. As did the Air Forces have diagrams of enemy bombers and airplanes, first of all to identify them and then knowing their strong and weak spots. Happy New Year!!! PS: Military History (Not) Visualised has good videos about it with sources and you can even buy the manuals for yourself. They translated them into English. PPS: I totes agree about strategic value > tactical value. Again HM(N)V has great videos about the end of the 2nd world war where on the Wehrmacht side on many, many occasions they, lower echelon, had tactical victories but it didnt matter in the grand scheme of things. Cheers :) PPPS: Maybe people should watch more German movies from the 1950s like "Die Brücke" and "Die Mörder sind unter Uns" and the interviews British journalists did among the german population in the early 1930s and their general anti war mood.

The Highway is in a slight depression, while the other three Tigers from 101st SS Heavy Tanks (Dollinger's 009, Iriohn's 314, and Kister's 312) are on a slight elevation in the adjacent field off to his right. Radley-Walters and the Sherbrookes deal with the immediate threat first (some StuGs in the south + Wittmann), Ekins and the Yeomanry take care of theirs (the three Tigers). 101st SS Heavy Tanks basically wandered into a killbox. So well said! We could use some grace with regard to possible mistakes and some politeness for people who are providing free content, and most importantly, we could take a few minutes to PONDER the point of view of the creators, and the context they are highlighting before firing off angry flames. Give peopel the benefit of the doubt…or make your own videos that are better, and so perfect that they are immune to criticism. Well done Chieftain and enjoy your well-deserved vacation.

It’s back to the Golden Circle, WHY we are doing something, then HOW we intend to do it , finally with WHAT!. Unfortunately too much focus has been on the WHAT of Sherman, without considering the strategic WHY or operational HOW. This approach applies to its manufacturing and operational deployment. The key line from Bovington was it was the right tank, at the right time, at the right location. The western desert, Pacific and Burma (the British did send them to the sub continent) Sherman was unmatched and supreme, the Lee/Grant having paved the way. Western Europe was tougher but it performed exceptionally, where only 14% of action was tank on tank, that’s why you brought Firefly Achilles and finally the Sherman 76mm, though it needed the better ammunition. Given European geographical topography, combat ranges were limited to around 500 yards therefore the German gun range advantage is negated. Consequently, Sherman, Cromwell and indeed Churchill had manoeuvrability and serviceability advantages over Panther and to a lesser extent Panzer IV and Jagdpanzers, particularly when you have a Wehrmacht with Eastern war experience trying to understand and adapt to fighting in the confines of Normandy and failing. I ignored Tigers involvement, serviceability was poor, they were relative small in numbers. Apart from the Wehrmachts 503 Abteilung which had limited success, it performed badly.

Well its the perception of how the brits structure the discussion. The 75mm fired primarily HE rounds they say. However the exclude the fact the 2 and 6 pounders had a ineffective HE rounds, the 75mm was a better anti tank gun than the 2 or 6 pounders and The British troops perfered the sherman in the field because of theHE capability. The also forget to mention the 6 pounder guns that were boared out to accept american 75mm rounds ...

3:18 The next time you sit down and have a chat with the guys at Bovington about things like "tank destroyers weren't supposed to fight tanks" thing... could you also bring up another issue with them about how they keep referring to the Sherman as a "Tommy Cooker" or "Zippo" like they did in that recent video. (And, by the way, it was even worse. There was a Facebook post by Bovington just a little over a year ago where they... yes... called the Shermans a "Ronson"... Despite you disproving that back in like 2015...)
@stevevernon1978
@stevevernon1978 5 месяцев назад
The way I remember the story is "Tommy cooker" is something the Germans called dead British tanks in North Africa, whether they were British made or US made. because when hit, they caught fire. The German tanks did EXACTLY the same thing when hit, and at approximately the same rate. But the Germans avoided talking about the tanks their mates were killed in.

I agree 100% with Sydney 2814. There is a fine, scholarly tone to your work that separates you from the hordes of clickbait generators that swamp this piece of the interwebs. Your work is commendable. Advice to all viewers: if the knucklehead you are viewing can not be bothered to learn how to pronounce words, even if they are not native speakers of the language in question, they are not worthy of your time. The other day, I tuned into some dope's video in re: "guns of the old west" who, literally, mispronounced a fairly common word: "Colt"... Look: Asian languages can be tricky, German produces compound words that are 27 letters long...I get it. But: " Colt "??? Really????
