In this video we share how to properly care for our Shasta Daisies (Leucanthemum species). These powerful perennials are an asset to any garden, but there are a couple things that should be done with them to ensure you are maintaining the prettiest, healthiest plants possible. After clearly explaining why we love Shasta Daisies, we deepen the conversation by showing you what they look like from spring to autumn, including care for each season. I also show what they look like after deadheading the spent flowers so you know exactly what to do with them. These drought tolerant, winter hardy perennials are a beloved member of the Aster family and will perform across a wide variety of garden settings. #daisies #gardening #plantcare

This video is right on time for me! I just purchased two of these plants, and am putting them into my garden later today. I think that I will cut them totally down after they are done with their first flush. I did not know that this was a way of rejuvenating the plant again in the same year. Good info. Devin! Many thanks.

@@plantvibrations I bought the white petals with yellow center Shasta Daisies. They are beautiful, and the ones I had planted last year are in bloom now. They look beautiful. Keep showing us your great videos. I love that you are in my zone, and only live about 30 minutes from me.

Awesome information thanks for that. I have the Alaska Shasta Daisy, which is a bigger variety.. what’s your suggestion for keeping them from getting floppy and falling over and when that happens they leave a visible hole in the center of the plant in the spring time?

Devin when is the best time to prune these for vase bouquets? For example at 03:32 you have various stages of bloom development. Should we use only the fully opened blooms (far right) or will the barely open bloom (second from the left) continue to unfurl to fully extended petals in a vase? I'm surprisingly not finding much info on this for Shastas, thanks for any advice.
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 6 дней назад
That’s a good question, I have never used them for vases. I’d suggest cut three or so at various stages and wait over the course of a week if they continue to open. My best bet is they would continue to open

Hi ! Nice video I just brought 2 of those plants, I try not to water them as much and I’m not sure if that’s the problem but leaves on bottom of plant are very dry and crispy I brought them on a gallon container I don’t know much about this plant that’s why I’m asking
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 15 дней назад
As they grow, the lower leaves get shaded out and that happens. Totally normal

Hi Devin Hope you & your family are doing well. I watch you on the Q I’m sorry my question doesn’t have to do with daisies but with calla Lillies. I got some really deep purple ones last year Dug them up for the winter of course they had lot of new baby bulbs I planted them all this spring. Now I have lighter purple & ones that are pink Is this normal to get different colors from the mother bulbs?

My shasta daisies are over 2m tall! Is this the same plant? However, I only cut the stems to the bottom at end of season last year, and did not trim the leaves.
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 3 дня назад
It is possible, but there are other daisy shaped flowers that are similar

I had one that died off this year. But I have one that blooms in the fall, I’m guessing it’s a type of chrysanthemum. I have to give it the Chelsea chop in the spring to keep it from flopping.

An old British gardener told me to cut them back just to strengthen the stems so they don't flop over.
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 19 дней назад
Yes that’s called the Chelsea chop. For certain varieties of shasta daisies it is essential to do that! Mine are naturally compact and don’t require it

Yes, wonderful deer resistant plant but buyer beware not to get confused with the Chrysanthemum look alike as those are deer candy. I always noticed how in a field the cows will eat everything but the daises.

Sometimes this can happen as hybrids can revert to their original coloring
