I remember buying the gba version on a vacation in Sweden. Playing that game in a nice little cabin in the snowy wilderness is a dear memory to me, but playing it now I'd probably also be this pissed 😂
Had they delayed it until a free-er release schedule without as much competition I think it could have been plenty improved. I do think plenty of the criticism is the result of a rushed release schedule, and the lack of a half pipe mode and racing seems to be more due to engine limitations since, compared to SSX at least, the game is slower and doesn't seem to be a good fit for that. I'd rate the game a lot higher than Jak does, and I didn't really have much of an issue with bonking (save the Kirkwood bonking on the animals, which yes, is tedious and can go fuck itself). I wouldn't call it outright bad, but I think Jak's trying to approach this like he would a Tony Hawk game which is plenty of the issue. With any snowboarding game, approach matters much more and you need to know the layout of everything better. You aren't going to grind down entire sections of the mountain on SSX: The Tour, which I've done, without setting up your line in your mind ahead of time and knowing what you're going to hit and when you're going to hit it. Pulling off an insane run like that is a massive part of the enjoyment after all. That being said, the vehicles were an excellent idea, and if space could be found for them, yeah, I'd be down for more and more varied respawns, especially if there's a bit of challenge terrain where a lot of gaps get situated. Adding a groove mode similar to Wakeboarding Unleased, or a "lives system" of sorts where if you score enough when you hit a vehicle, you get time added back, also would have helped, since if you missed a goal, you can at least lap it without restarting, especially if it's a challenge late in the course.
It was the same thing for SiN, as the game was released on October 9th 1998, nearly 10 days before Half Life was released. (11 month edit: Apparently SiN was not the only game that was released at the wrong time, Split/Second was released bat the wrong time as well.)
I loved this game as a teen. My friend and I would play the hell out of this. He got ridiculously good at it though, could combo entire levels. Really fond memories of this game.
I'm kind of confused... you complain about not being able to go back up the mountain, but throughout the level, those things with the yellow arrows will transport you up again, and depending on which ones you use, you will go up a little bit or all the way to restart from the top. I'm confused why you didn't mention that?
Even though the soundtrack slapped I remember toggling off every song until it was just “The Evil Powers of Rock and Roll” by the Supersuckers on repeat.
I'm more familiar with Shaun Palmer's than any other snowboarding game... Because Shaun Palmer's was advertised on THPS3's manual back cover. I've never played a snowboarding game.
Honestly I think a Shaun Palmer 2 could've helped a lot with them figuring out what to do with the series much like how it took until Pro Skater 2 to really nail the level design "mostly" but Kelly Slater that shit was nailed down pretty well it's sad we never got a second one
Not only snowboarding video games were mass produced. Snowboarding was already an Olympic sport since 1998, while we got both BMX freestyle, skateboarding AND surfing only in Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021 due to COVID-19).
@@SquareEyedJak Cheers as well! I enjoy each Hawktober, and yeah if you ever need anything for any random extreme sports game, I've probably got vids of it.
I hope snowboarding games will make a comeback with the quality of the old games, just like with the skateboarding genre right now. Also, I have never seen a snowboarding game before where there is a course full of yellow snow!
Wooow ! 2P Push mode is a direct clone of the 2P push mode in Snow Surfers / Rippin' Riders (DC) !!! Never try multiplayer on Shaun Palmer but this mode was very fun on Dreamcast ^^
This game is amazing with friends and the cheat codes on I use to play this game all the time when I was a kid with my dad so I have a lot of nostalgia for this one Just recently saw it at my local video store so I picked it up (trying to rebuild my ps2 collection from the early 2000's) And when I sat down with my friends to play it we all had a blast (this being before all the covid shit) so I will agree with that playing the game regular is frustrating but if its just with friends with the cheat codes on it is a super fun old school split screen multiplayer game
At 1:30 you said the developers of Shaun Palmer were known for their work on Shaun Palmer. Did you mean to say "known for their work on Cool Boarders"? Because Dear Soft was first UEP Systems and they used their Cool Boaders: Code Alien engine for this game.
💯🔥🔥🔥 📺 There is one thing this game has that no other snowboarding or Skateboarding game has, even today. SPLIT SCREEN PUSH MODE. Two player split screen multiplayer where who ever does better tricks Literally gets to push your opponent side of the split screen in in real time. Shit was incredible, I use to play with my little brother, I would do better tricks, so his screen was getting smaller and smaller, he could barely see, but he would make some insane comebacks and Push my side of the split screen in! And the fun thing is.., anybody else watching us play can instantly tell who’s winning bc the it was never a even line in the middle of the tv screen game like every other split-screen multiplayer game.
Didn’t you know Jack? There is only one black Snow-Boarder in the entire world, and it happens to also be the founder of Snow-Boarding “John SnöhBorhd”.
Fun fact: Dear Soft is just a renamed UEP Systems, who made the Cool Boarders series. If you look at pre-release articles about this game, most websites even say that the game was developed by UEP Systems.
Fun Fact: They actually had a sequel planned but cancelled due to low sales. I remember the O2 website having a section saying Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarding 2 complete with logo and artwork
I’ve got some amusing memories about this game. I bought it for like, 2 bucks on GameStop, but had to pay 18 bucks in shipping. Then, they left it in the porch and didn’t tell anyone... right at the beginning of winter. There was a snowstorm, and the game got buried on my deck for like, 2 months. It was a warm year, so one day the snow melted enough to reveal the package, and it actually still worked just fine! Honestly not terrible. Maybe not as good as Amped, but it did feel tighter, in my opinion.
I liked this game so much I remember renting it so often from Video Ezy or Blockbuster (or somewhere) that eventually they were just like 'um... do you want to buy the disk to keep?' 🤣11 year old me was extremely happy.
Now I want Jacksfilms as a playable Skater in THPS 1+2 with the deep dab as his signature special trick. At E3 2016 he held a sign saying “Make Tony Hawk Great Again” after THPS 5.
4/10 its for kids WHO dont know how to Play . When i first time played demo of Shaun Palmer in thps IT was mindblowing. 4 real its really hard at start but its worth IT . I Completed all objectives on all chars before, unlocked another one then. Specials easy , music great i listening 4 days ago whole album again from game. Its 9/10 but u need to give This game time
The funniest thing about these games retroactively is how Tony Hawk's name became significantly more recognizable BECAUSE of the Pro Skater series. But I look at Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX or Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder and my first question is "I'm sorry, who?" A real testament to the failure of the O2 series.
I would personally say that Matt Hoffman is a lot more well known than Dave Mirra. Hoffman was a consistent guess in Jackass and has his own bmx company named after him. Plus he's worth a lot more.
