First shave with a Shavette i got a lot of cuts and thought"never ever again" but now, best shaves ever. Better like with safety Razor. Less irittations with it. No scratches. OK, sometimes a little Cut, but no razorburns. Still get them with safetyrazors... I like shavettes!
I like shavettes too...last night I shaved with one. The night before I did as well..tonight I use the same particular shavette..the tomb 45 3 way shavette.. The Turkish razor in my opinion is a safer option to shave with.. I also wouldn't use a feather blade with a shavette.. I use level 3, filoso barber brand, EZ blade , Shapu etc..
It's reassuring to see someone else having trouble with their first shavette shave , all the tutorial videos make it look easy, but I found out this morning why styptic pencils/alum blocks are a good investment
4:17 "I don't know why you wanna use one of these when you have a safety razor...". Well, I didn't know either until now. Wih shavettes, you choose the angle, so it can be aggressive or mild, depending on your technique. With two passes (WTG & XTG) I can get a great smooth shave, and with three, the best shave of my life. Furthermore, it will always remove the beard unlike some mild safety razors. However, good preparation and skin stretching are crucial. Even if you have great technique, bad prep can easily result in bloodbath.
Holy smokes... if I had moved that fast with my first shavette shave with a feather I would have bled out. It's been a year since my first shavette shave and I think I nicked myself a month ago, it was six months before that that I had a nick. Every month I get better at it, smoother. If I take my time now, I don't even feel the blade against my skin. I wouldn't go back to a disposable but one of these day's I'll try a safety razor, they look relaxing.
What you mean by "don't feel the blade against my skin"? You mean scratching your skin? Anyway, I'm learning to shave with a shavette and really liking it.
good old reliable green fat boy to the rescue! :) I was holding my breath with your fast caffeine hands and a scary shavette. LOL. but you did very well. Dracula would be proud. p.s. why am I still a subscriber you ask? well, because of your sense of humor. I have enjoyed your recent scotch on the porch videos. :-) Cheers, Mark
I shave with a shavett about once a week. I get a super close shave with it however I have to take a day off after shaving with it. I let my father-in-law try it and he came out of the bathroom with a wash cloth on his face trying to stop the bleeding.
Speick (German product) makes an aftershave that contains Alum in it, and I've seen others. I'm not sure if the level of Alum in there will have the same affect as a styptic pencil though.
I have been shaving with a double edge safety razor for years and like you wanted to try a shavette. I purchased a parker 31r and must admit I was nervous of using it the first time. ( using 1/2 a Wilkinson sword blade ) I like you had about 1/2 a dozen blood spots after one pass down the face. ( neck and chin ) I know this is a learning curve so on the second try I got a shave with no blood spots, well only one, and that came not from the shavette but from my safety razor when I used it to do the top lip area. ( chickened out ) I was not interested in getting my face perfectly clean, but just getting the technique right. I still looked clean shaven with just one pass. The third attempt I used the shavette on all the face with no issues. I must admit, I take My time when using the shavette and have much respect for its possible bite ! I will carry on using it now, as practice should make perfect. I have heard the shaves will get better. I'm sticking with one pass until I get the technique right !
I've heard of the parker 31r shavette, were you able to use your double edged safety razor blades for it? Did you have to break them in half like in the video in order to put it in?
@@thoranevans4832 Hello there, yes you have to put a half blade into the shavette and I use the Boots double edge blades. £2 for ten. I get 4 shaves from each half. Snap in half. So 80 shaves for £2. Have used Wilkinson sword too. But Boots don't stock them now.
I recently bought a shavette... I went for the cheapest available on the local online barbershop... the one that had no reviews yet probably because everyone buys the slightly more expensive ones since they look a bit less cheap (but now I get to review it). It has an even simpler mechanism for attaching the blade: it simply has a narrow slit you have to force the blade into... which isn't the easiest but as long as you hold it on the non-sharp side in the middle and gently but with a bit of force press it into that slit until you get it 75% in; then you can push it in place with the back of a comb. But while loading is a bit fiddly; it feels fairly safe because theres no layers that have to be stacked on top of the blade while holding it in place like on this one so theres very few incentives to trick you into touching the edge while loading it. And unloading it couldn't be easier; simply aim the tip of the shavette into the used razors can and use a comb to push the blade by the edge out. I've only tried it twice now, the first time I severely irritated my skin a couple of spots by holding it too steep angle; but besides that it wasn't too bad, a couple of weepers. I actually found it much easier to shave the gap between my nose and my mustache than with a DE safety razor (because the shavette blade is much narrower than the head of a DE) and I irritated the skin on my neck much less than usual (probably got lucky). I managed to do the first with the grain passes for about 80% of my face. But then I was a bit careless while figuring out a what grip to use and bumped the blade directly in my chin, made the longest slice in my face I've ever made with a razor 😂so I finished the remaining passes with my DE. Tried it again today; used Shark blades, the mildest blades I have , did the first passes with the grain for the whole face this time; only nicked myself a tiny bit on the under my nose this time. Tried a bit against the grain and nicked myself immediately; so I think I'll keep doing only the first pass with the shavete for a while more. Did get the closest shave ever on my cheeks this time though, very little irritation. I think I can get used to a shavette. It's already my favourite for trimming the below the nose; and I think once I have better control of the angles; I think I can get a much better shave on my neck, which the DE seem to either scrape too much or not shave well at all no matter what I do... I think the problem is the skin on my neck is very loose and stretchy so I need a shallower angle than the DE head allows in order not to catch the skin, but which a shavette seems to allow.
I tried the shavette and sliced myself up proper. Had to prove that it sucks by doing it twice. To make matters worse I accidentally duplicated my Amazon order so I have two of the bloody things and a million shavette blades. I'll let my brother try it out.
Entertaining video, and I agree! I tried a shavette and sliced up my face something wicked (because I was trying to use an aggressive angle for most of the shave). Even though that was my mistake, I also had the same issue where I had to think really hard about how to shave certain areas, and the blade is just so sharp that it digs in instantly if you let it. I prefer my safety razors. Right now I've been getting amazing shaves with my Fine Superlite. I have a very coarse beard and the efficient yet mild feeling slant provides my skin the most comfort, I've almost completely ditched my non-slants.
I have purchased three shavettes as part of my razor collection. Bottom line, they produce a great shave, but you have to be very careful with those things. The first time I used a shavette, it took half of a double-edged blade. No problem until I nipped my forefinger with the tip. Took a lot of styptic to stop the bleeding, and I didn’t use one again until a few months later. I used my straight shavette (non-folding) the next time and did very well. The next time, 95% perfect until I tried shaving against the grain on one side of my face. Slice. Took a lot of styptic and some liquid bandaid to stop the bleeding. Again, I am very careful, use a gentle feather like touch, and I go with one pass only. I finish with a DE razor, or even a Harry’s cartridge razor to get an ultra smooth shave. I do this maybe once a week tops. I’d like to try that German aftershave with alum in it, though I always use an alum block after each shave, over a splash of witch hazel. Great video, though! You show it like it is!!
I use a shavette and an Arko stick at the gym. It's great after the hot tub, but you have to be gentle and efficient with your passes. Shavettes will scrape some extra off if you've been soaking a while.
I find straight razors to be more forgiving than a shavette. Shavettes are too aggressive. The blades protrude too far beyond the holder, making them thiner and too flexible. If you use a straight razor that doesn’t have too deep a blade, it is safer and if used correctly will give a better shave. My first couple of shaves with a straight went much better than I expected even though I was a bit scared. Then I got careless and cut my right cheek at the bone. It was such a clean cut that it didn’t take long to heal and didn’t scar. Now I respect the blade EVERY time. I haven’t cut myself since with very rarely even a tiny spot of a cut. Start by touching the heal of the blade to your skin, then lay it flat, then lift the heal of the blade just a little. As soon as it cuts easily, it is at the correct angle. Movies nearly always show straight razors being used at far too large an angle. Sweeney Tod being one example.
All straight razor shavers have been their we forget how damn sharp they are until oops nicked the corner of my lip, so far after 9 years of using mostly shavettes and straights most cuts have been carelessness of touching the blades.
Honestly the three benefits of straight razor is that it is a one time purchase. Easier to line up for facial hair styles, and it cuts through thick/old growth beards better than a safety razor. The issue is the learning curve and that it needs to be stropped and rehoned 2-3 times year ideally. A safety razor to me if you get the right razor and blades for your growth type, and you shave at least 2 times a week, is a better choice for most men. My thoughts though
A one time purchase.......apart from all the faffing about you have to do with it. As opposed to dirt cheap DE blades that you can bulk buy 100 of and be set for maybe a couple of years.
Talking while you were shaving probably contributed to the cuts. I just started with a shavette, and it's a learning curve. I do the first pass with the shavette, then the second pass with the safety razor, just like you did. I got a shavette that takes a whole blade so I don't have to handle the blade so much. I also didn't like the moveable handle, so I took off the handle and mounted it in a handle so that it is Japanese style. For me, it cuts my wire bristle hairs better than the safety razor. Time will tell if it will be the go-to though. Great video. I love your sense of humor. Especially the Bag-o-glass reference.
Indian & Pakistani barbers use it, TDJ means nothing, can be had generic or rebranded. The clasp is sometimes loose, it can be fixed by slightly squeezing the clasp to hold a blade better. Faulty ones would likely drop a blade during the shave.
glad to see you are venturing into the straights. It was a bit hard to watch, but you are learning in a public environment. The technique is not simple. It seems to be simple but its not. Basically don't use too much pressure. You can raise the spine (increase the angle) as long as you don't press hard (at all). Under the nose requires the scrape technique (raising the spine) to be effective. Also learn to blowfish. You might have some concave areas of the face (I do) so blowfish the cheek to make it round and get a better shave and avoid cuts. Straights are great, when your technique improves you can really enjoy them. Also with straights, you have to learn to use both hands. Left for the left face side and right for the other. Use the dominant hand for the front. You can cheat a little and cross over, but not too much. For the XTG pass I capsize the straight...to each his own.
did you by it off Amazon for £2.00 that's where I got mine from at that price. And for the first time I did get a few cuts & nicks but I didn't give up and I have three other straight razors & shavette. But your best to give it one more go with the shavette and see what you think. All the Best Wishes Robert. :) 👍
Very amusing video! It's great to see a shavette used by someone who's not already super confident and experienced with it, and hear your honest opinion at the end. I just bought one myself a few days ago and have been waiting for the right time to try it. I'll probably start with a Dorco blade before working my way up to my favorite Astras and Gillette Silver Blues.
I still remember buying one of the plastic disposable shavettes just to trim my goatee beard, but then I was tempted to try it in full shave, and then I fell in love with it. I still have my KingCGillete and all my safety razors I collected around the past 15 years, but still, if I am going to pick one for all purposes, including shaving my head, I would go with the straight razors for I can use it for shaving and fineline trimming.
I just used mine again in the bath easier sat down in front of the mirror this time only a few small nics prepped my face with hot water first worked well best yet
Geo from Shave Nation is very fast with both a straight and a shavette. I purchased a Parker SRB from Amazon and I can tell you practice is the key element I got 7 nicks and not a very satisfying shave at all but I’m going to stick with it
Edit: Oh you answered this question at the end of the video. I know this is an old video, but what are your thoughts. DE or SE Shavette Safety razors? Edit: Also you're hilarious. That's why I subscribed!
I'm jealous! i got the same kind of shavette from ebay. typing in foldable barber straight edge and searching for cheapest first showed me some. for a buck and this kind for under 3. so i ordered one. used it once so far and sliced into my cheek DEEP! wish i had your skill. maybe next time i won't wipe the blade but try rinsing it like you did. awesome vid.
Nice video mate, thanks for uploading. Unfortunately, most shavettes you see on Amazon/eBay are going to be harsh. Many don't hold the blade tight enough and DE blades are prone to bending. I have a Feather SS, it takes Feather Artist Club blades which are much more rigid and give a great shave. It also has no scale so it's a lot easier to manoeuvre, like a knife.
When I first used a straight razor, I did not had a safety razor that time, I did not even wet shaved yet at that time! Because of that I had 2 slice marks (not cuts worse than that!) on my chin area >o
Enjoyed your video but you made me very nervous when you was trying to open the shavette when it was wet Could have been a bloody shavette horror movie lol
Hi Sinatra how are you I was planning to buy a shavette but after seeing you shave with a shavette I don't think so will buy one I better stick to my safety razor.
Shavette, bloody shavette! Any relation to U2 Sunday, bloody Sunday? 😋😁👍🏼 Lol. Little blood but not too bad of a shave. I actually like and feel more comfortable with a straight razor more than a shavette. Shavette seems to light to me and i nick myself too easy with them.
I really like the Feather Artist Club SS and DX....they both give amazing shaves once youi get the hang of it . Love using this razor! It has a bit of a learning curve but once you've mastered it, it's an absolute joy to use. There's nothing like that pass from under the neck, over the jowl and along the cheek. This particular razor, the Feather SS & DX are engineering marvels. And the sharpness of these blades (Pros or Supers) exceeds what I can get on my straight razors...that just means you have to be extra careful...which translates into learning great shaving technique.CHEERS!!
I use one all the time. 1. Shave your right side of your face and neck with the right hand and lend side with the left hand. I like these for getting straight edges on my beard. If I was clean shaven then a safety razor is much better.
It's quite hard to believe that it's your first encounter with shavette as you performed nicely. I had a very pathetic experience for first time with nicks and cuts all over my face. Anyways, I'm quite used to it now, but still didn't try across the grain with shavette.
The moment you said you used Feather blades i knew this wasn't going to end well xD. I'd probably cut myself using those blades with a double edged safety razor!
Your a brave man. I bought a razorine because it seems to be easier to handle but one of these, no thanks 😅 I must say you did very well for it being your first go at it.
i can tell you were really pissed off after the shave but trying very hard to stay calm; i have to say, i'm right there with you when you said the safety razor is your thing. i'm never gonna touch one of those crazy shavette contraptions ever.
Safety vs straight is subjective. I fan get the closest shave ever with a shavette, but the most nicks. Straight razors are the most comfortable but least smooth. Safeties are in between, but don't use them on a thick beard!
I think longer blades are better if you are shaving yourself, the half DE blade shavettes are better for barbers. Longer blades have more contact with skin and hair so it's harder to "dig in" to your face and nick/cut yourself. Dovo is one option, there are some cheap shavettes on aliexpress that take the antepole/cloud super 77 blades
jajajaja his reaction after finished with the shavette. i remember the first time i shaved with my shavette, half of my face was in the blade at the end..... i usually shave with my razorine and my jagger safety razor
I commented the same thing on one of your other vids and no hate but it is false that a straight razor is not as or more sharp then a safety razor the are way more shap because they have a hollow grind they are sharper then a scopel or a exacto knife I think that the stright razor you fist had was dull or just old again no hate just trying to fix any miss info great vid
Just wanted to say thank you for making the "how not to" video, lol. Gotta admit there were a couple moments I cringed. Been wanting to purchase a shavette but every now and then I see a newb video like yours and I give thanks I didnt!! Stick to DE, those Scotch on the porch videos and those hairstyling videos...those are your true calling.
I usually shave with my clippers I shave my head with. It's not smooth as a baby's ass but it works for me. Havent put a razor on my face in 20 years because I get razor burn bad. Well I had to work in a refinery this weekend and had to be smooth shaven. Wish I could say I only cut myself a few times. I got myself with a brand new safety razor about 10 times.
Hey man. Great first go with the shavette. You seem to be having trouble as a result of using only 1 hand. Switching hands for the opposite side of your face can be very effective, but takes some getting used to. You can easily buy several brands of blades that are already snapped in half. Barbers use these regularly. There are different types of shavettes, including those that have easier blade loading mechanisms, and different types of blades. The closeness of a shavette Shave is tough to beat. We have a group on Facebook that focuses on shavettes. Feel free to check us out shavetteworld.space
Don't snap them in half as it can leave a bit of a folded edge and this prevents the blade from lying completely flat. It's far better to cut the blade with very sharp scissors, plus save money on buying pre-cut blades.
Will never use a straight razor or have someone shave me with one. Seen too many horror movies. Some straights have replaceable blades so I don't buy your argument that safety razors are sharper. That said, go back to a DE razor before you do some serious damage.
i suscribe to your channel, you are funny, just start with the safety razor and i like it a lot, i will never go for a shavette, i kind like to leave my blood where it belongs
If you lived back before the safety razor came along I'll bet you would have grown a beard and mustache or have gone to a barbershop one in a while.🪒🪒💈💈
I hope u find this video and cringe worthy as I do 😂😂😂😂 as a seasoned pro master straighty razor shaver person I found this terrifying to watch lol. But serious. It was fun to watch but several things just looked wrong 😂😂 unfortunately we were all here at one time
You cant get a straight razor as sharp as a saftey razor? lmao okay buddy. That's the whole appeal of the straight razor or half of it. Sharpening it yourself. buying a grand worth of fancy equipment and messing about like a dude does. Of course you can get it as sharp, you get even sharper than any mass produced industrial blade is going to be. Because I spent 30 minutes meticulously honing it to perfection with a 400x microscope and abrasives down to half of a tenth of a micron.
