Shaving w Electric Razor : Which Pre-Electric shave product is better? 

Just for fun. I suggest doing this test again, exactly the same way, only switching sides. Put Lectric on the right side of your face and Afta on the left side. The purpose? There are 2 issues. 1 - To see if you favor a side too much when shaving. I'm right handed and I always shave my face better on that side regardless of products. 2 - Each face has a unique hair map and it can be very different from side to side.

I'm Asian. The facial hair you grew in one day would take me 3-4 days, possibly longer.

Thanks, George. I used an electric Braun for the first time in the hospital. After four days without shaving I was feeling pretty grungy. Bought the electric so I could shave without getting out of bed. Did a pretty decent job but your video really helped me decide that it takes a bit of time to adjust and the pre-shave creams help get closer to a razor shave. I'm going to give it another shot.

When you mentioned that you grew up in the 60's I have to assume we are both close to same age. I came across this video because it had exactly the pre-shave comparison data I was looking for. But what I found was much, much more...and a very pleasant surprise: A very concise, professional, clear and well executed RU-vid video that others could learn from...no matter the topic; pre-shaves or lima beans. I could actually 'understand' you when you spoke...not in a robotic voice and not so fast that you sounded like Donald Duck (that guy to the left). The lighting and sound level was obviously paid attention to. You stayed on topic in a smooth progression with not a single fumble; not even a baby crying or a phone ringing in the background! I would venture a guess that in a prior life you were some form of educator, What a perfect presentation...I applaud and thank you.

I think where 'Lectric shave may have an advantage is with less "stout" beards - my father used both but went through far more Williams than than the Afta. I believe the main idea around the 'Lectric Shave was to help the whiskers stand up for a closer shave and to help clean and lubricate the cutting bar. If you have thicker whiskers or if you've skipped a day the Afta would likely be your go-to. I sometimes use the Williams 'Lectric when I use an electric (I have a beloved Remington too as well as a Braun) to shave my head and the smell always reminds me of my father who passed in 2007. Great content George (as always) and when my beard comes back to that 2nd shirt button I'll make the trip to Philly (or wherever you're at) for a shaping and a head shave!

Thanks for this! I just ordered the same electric razor actually, I haven't used an electric razor in years. Since shaving my whole face, my skin hasn't been enjoying the safety razor as much. Hopefully this electric razor will give me a less bumpy result. Definitely gonna pick up one of these for it though!

I learned how to shave in high school and Ive been using Afta aftershave ever since, thats 16 years now lol, time flies. Afta is a great brand and very inexpensive.

For years, I've avoided electric shavers because when I did try them many years ago, I didn't use the right techniques, which led to irritated, stressed skin. The drawback with the stick has been that I too have to shave once again in the evening if I have to go out somewhere. Now I've tried the Braun Series 6, and I've learned now to use it correctly. So happy that I can get rid of the shadow easily! Will try a pre-shave oil too now! Greetings from Sweden/Viktor

Same here. I get those bumps if I shave with a razor more than twice a week. I usually just let it go till the next time I shave. Just this week I purchased a Braun battery powered razor just for that reason. It's not a real close shave. But it doesn't look as bad as it normally does after two days of not shaving. I'm going to be on the lookout for that Afta product, and give it a try. Like you, I prefer the razor. But too lazy sometimes to shave that way. I doubt there is any difference in actual time. But I can shave on the way to work with an electric. And that allows me to "shave" a little time off of my shaving. Pun intended.

Thanks for the comparison. I don't like aftershave lotions mostly due to the scent and I feel my face feels sticky when I use them, even lotions with aloe and such that supposed to cool your face. After I shave I use isopropyl alcohol, and then wash with soap and water a few minutes after. This is probably harsh and leads to my irritation. I didn't compare closeness as my criteria is limiting irritation and I did try different pre-electric shaving solutions over the years. I used products for both in shower use (wet), as well as dry shaving. I have used oils like shave secret and even standard oils like vitamin e oil and baby oil. I've tried standard shaving creams like Barbasol, gel creams like Edge, creams for use in the shower, and products like Afta and Lectric shave. In the end and currently I also found that the Afta provided the better protection against irritation bumps, especially on my neck. It really works for me. However Afta is not always easy to find. Supermarkets almost never carry it, but they all have Lectric Shave. Supercenters like the 'Marts', can be hit and miss as to if they have it that day or not. So I bought a case of 24 from the internet because it works for my skin.

👍Hey I enjoy your videos brother!! Use a real traditional straight razor! Also use a (osma) alum block after you shave with cold water, and then apply some witch hazel. They both work wonders!! Those shavette type razors like a feather, dovo that holds De blades are very unforgiving. For my skin type i just can't use commercial blades. Ive been shaving with a Ralf Aust soligen razor for just over a year. I used to suffer from ingrown hairs bad, but when I switched to a real straight it solved the problem!

I use the "Lectric" because I have not seen the "Afta" product on the shelves in a long time. Seems to work well when I use my Norelco...which is on the same battery for the past 14 years.

An excellent review. I initially used williams lectric shave as that's what my grandfather had always used, but i was always displeased with the results. Sad I can't get foils anymore for my old remington dual foil 5 corded electric, but thanks to the Afta that's not as big an issue for me. Have you noticed any difference between using a rotary vs. an oscillating style electric shaver?

After getting a nice Panasonic electric as a gift, I tried Lectric shave. It worked well enough, but I didn’t like it because I got more of the liquid in the sink and on the counter top than on my face. After using about a quarter of the bottle, I dumped the rest down the sink. I’ll try the Afta cream next.

I still use Lectric shave, but I shave half the time on the road and use the same brand electric shaver (Braun) without the pre Lectric shave. Get the same close shave. I did not know afta had a pre electric lotion and I will give it a try.

Great info. I"m in philippines and notice they have Afta pre-electric shave so i'll give it a shot. It's 8$ US not sure what it sells for in America, but I just got a new electric razor and just shaved, works great, my neck is the main issue always, i cannot shave razor or electric razor on my neck without getting razor burn. The difference in closeness probably disappears within hours, as the stubble grows back out, so the advantage of a close shave is pretty short-lived. It makes more sense to choose based on comfort, with the scent maybe a secondary consideration. (There are Lectric Shave copies out there with no scent, other than the ethyl alcohol solvent itself.)

Like, WHOA! - And I just bought some Afta recently because the store I usually shop at had no more Lectric Shave at that time... As soon as my LS at home runs out, I'm gonna give the Afta a whirl...

With great surprise I hear from this video that you personally use your Remington to daily shave and altering it in weekends with Straight razors!As a professional and master professional what's your opinion?Can it be combination(both electric and/or straight or DE razors?I mean perhaps the irritation you get by straight wet razor shave it is just caused because of this?Or it doesn't make any change?In my electric razors (A foil 5914 Braun Flex XP Foil electric ) also to my new Philips S5420/06 aquatouch(actually a great shaver!!- rotary one) declares in the manual that you have to use it day by day about 20 days so as to get used to your (everybody's) face shape..If one person alters wet razor (single blade or cartridge whatever), to electric shaving maybe that is the cause of the non satisfactory results and also great amount of irritation?I would like to hear your professional as always opinion to this topic...Thanks and keep up the good informative series you do!!

When comparing the pre-shave credit card sound with the after shave sound on the Lectric side (left), the two were nearly indistinguishable. So I'm not convinced. You'd think the Remington would shave adequately enough (pre shave or not) to have a larger difference even on the Lectric side.

Can’t help but wonder if Lectric Shave can be used to refill the cleaning cartridges for Braun shavers. Does anyone know?

I throughly enjoyed that comparison George. I can't shave with electric cause my sensitive skin. For some reason when I don't have a beard and I'm shaving or have a goatee my skin responds best to a mach 3 and shaving cream shaving with the grain. But If any one I know wants asks me about any pre-shave I'll be sure to recc Afta!!

I use coconut oil with my philips electric shaver. Anything else makes me break out for a week. I have thinking of maybe getting a philips OneBlade, if you've ever heard of it? Was also thinking of a braun but not sure what model is best for the money..

Alwas Lectric Shave. But then again I use Clubman aftershave and talc.

What I think is the hair grows in different directions of your face. If you did the same test with the same pre shave on each side it may verify this. The pre shave is to protect the skin not to give you a closer cut.

Sincerely put some very light beard oil in your electric shave shake it up well before you shave and you will be incredibly impressed in the smoothness, even using baby oil in it. Hey Electric shave looks like you need some work with your product. years back Electric shave had a product it was blue lotion it worked so well and then they took it off the marke,. I GUESS IT WORKED TO WELL! I forget the name of it? The old Williams Electric Shave from the 70s 80s was 10 times the product. Must have changed hands Proctor gamble/ Williams.

I use DE razor with a Merkur on my neck line, cheeks, head.

Does the afta have a strong smell? The aftershave does, and it lingers longer than I'd like.

Everyone brags up DE razors, but I love my electric razor. My neck always gets irritated from DEs but hardly ever does with an electric. It may not be baby smooth but I’d rather not have ingrowns and irritation.

LOL. Did you say "WaWa card"? You do know that most of the country, sadly, has no idea what WaWa is. Mid-way through vid. Went back to using an electric razor recently -- a Panasonic. Thought I'd give pre-shave a go. I just bought Lectric shave on Amazon but was considering Afta too. Went with Lectric because of those old ads. "LECTRIC SHAVE!" I can still hear it though that ad hasn't aired in decades. The power of advertising. Looking forward to the rest of your video. Who will win???? LOL.

Electric Shave gave you a quicker shaving process, but in the end, although it took a bit longer, Afta clearly got your face smoother.

I prefer afta too, I prefer to Williams pre letric shave, It works better, Smells better too, Not fond of Williams pre letric shave 's smell.

could not agree more, the afta may not be as popular and it feels wierd on your face but it has been my favorite for quite a while. That casava flour works great but too bad it kinda stinks. But lectric shave is greasy.

My Braun gets it done almost as good as my razor with no pre shave

First put on lectric shave, then Use the razor blade first, then put on afta aftershave lotion.

I just have a hot shower & face wash prior to an electric shave. The hairs are then ready to be swiped off.
