I was roommates with this guy in Colorado at the US Championships in 2006 when he was 18. Saw him lose to Daniel Jacob's on points but dropped him. You could see the greatness and focus on this guy. Also the humility in he and his Dad. End up cutting he and his Dad hair. Great experience. So many that are currently fighting was there.

I think the difference between the Errol who fought Porter and the Errol who fought Ugas was focus. Porter fought an unfocused Errol Spence and Ugas didn't have that luxury.

Wise commentary by Shawn Porter, he speaks well for someone who's been through so much in the ring. I liked his point about Spence trying to prove he could beat him at his own game, vs. Crawford who was the opposite. I couldn't understand how Spence justified his fight strategy against Porter because it played into Porter's hands, but at least Porter makes it clear that it was intentional on Spence's part. Spence absolutely must fight to HIS strengths against Crawford, and try to work around Crawford's strengths to have his best chance at pulling off a win.

Against an elite fighter like Crawford, Spence cannot afford to gamble with strategy. A classic example of losing due to trying to beat someone at their own game was Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran 1.

I am concerned that Spence's punishing style might be too much for Crawford though. I am still trying to figure out how he's going to keep Spence off of him. I recall little Gamboa stunning the larger Crawford with a quick perfectly timed right hook when he had his hands down and Crawford's legs wobbled very obviously, but I don't think Gamboa realized he had him hurt and Crawford was allowed to recover. If Spence tagged him like that the story would have ended differently. Crawford can punch too though, and he might be able to evade Spences attacks, so I'm not underestimating him.

Watching the Spence vs Ugas fight, I saw Errol doing the same exact thing as you saw Porter doing against Bud. I kept saying to my friends that even though Spence is blatantly beating up Ugas, he can't make those same mistakes against Bud Crawford. Spence has to tighten up in those moments because Bud is both more offensive and athletic than Ugas, and will capitalize on Errol's mistakes.

Crawfords timing is what beat Porter. Crawford has incredible timing and accuracy. Look at some of his KOs namely Kell Brook (timed him coming in), Avanesyn (timed him on the inside), Benavidez (timed him when he was throwing a shot), Porter (timed him in the middle of exchanges) etc. Crawford can definitely time Spence and catch him with a big punch! Spence on the other hand is all pressure! Consistent pressure behind strong fundamentals! He would possibly be the physically strongest fighter Bud would face but i think most people are expecting Spence to be physically stronger in reality Buds physical strength is highly underrated. But he did beat you at your own game. I think if Spence fought Porter again he would do the same thing, but worse. I’m a Bud supporter, but I see Spence stopping Crawford easily then what people are perceiving otherwise as a 50/50.
If Crawford is as mentally and physically in shape as in his last fight he is more likely to win than Spence. Spence is great and will be Crawford's biggest test, but Crawford's ability to size up the strengths of his opponents and work around them, and to set up his punches and fire them off with speed, accuracy, power makes him a bit more well rounded than Spence. But Spence can win if he pounds Crawford to the point where it slows him down, but we'll see if he can make that happen.
Shawn is a great analyst of his experience in the ring. His interpretation of Crawford and Spence fights with him is a high ring IQ output. Dynamism always have a better outcome than steady state. Practically it means studying Crawford's previous fights is much more useful than studying Spence before fighting them.

They’re not even in the same league on the inside, this is a short fight if Crawford thinks he can match Spence on the inside. Crawford’s stance switch and length is about all he’s got going for him. Spence also has way better defense. Believe me, I didn’t know either of these fighters until I recently did my research on them and watched tape on them both. The reason I looked into both of them was because I listened to an interview with Crawford and became a fan of his personality and wanted to see what he had, so I was already on his side rooting for him. Then I looked at Spence’s tape and saw I was rooting for the wrong guy.

Listen, with all due respect, I'm a HUGE Shawn Porter fan, watch The Porter Way Podcast EVERY week and enjoy it, but I'm always confused by this take. You can't say that Spence "tried" to beat you at your own game when at the end of the day HE WON lol; it should be "Spence BEAT ME at my own game", which in reality should represent him being the better Welterweight as of now. Another thing, if we're being honest, Spence vs. Porter compared to Crawford vs. Porter isn't even close. Crawford vs. Porter (which I paid for), was an underwhelming DUD in my personal opinion. Spence vs. Porter was a Fight of the Year candidate. I have no problem or boas towards Bud, I just feel it's premature to say he's definitely better, when Spence has faced and beaten the better competition INCLUDING Shawn Porter. Shawn said he knew that was probably his last fight before he even fought Bud and his Dad threw in the towel (prematurely) based on him not doing what he was supposed to in camp. Therefore the Porter that Bud faced compared to the Porter that Spence faced is two different Porters. Just like the Kell Brook Bud faced vs, the Kell Brook that Spence faced. Reminds me of Pacman vs. Mayweather convo. Pacquaio stopped Oscar and knocked out Hatton in 2 rounds and people loved to compare that to what Mayweather did against the same competition. Errol is the best Welterweight as it stands. He's the most proven. He best Brook when he was still in his prime, Porter, Garcia and now Ugas. That's 4 top 5 welterweights. Terence may be better per eye test but Spence has to be ranked higher based on resume.
Historically, in this weight class fights of this level are hyperactive. With men at this skill level, you can expect history to be made! Good comments by Porter.
