Honestly, one of my favorite skills I developed as a dancer is my pickup. It's super important for fast paced environments, and it's translated to other areas of life, but it's also just kind of fun and feels like a super power. I can learn probably around a minute of choreography in less than ten minutes. I actually learned an entire 4ish minute dance for a performance with my college team in about half an hour before the performance (I wasn't originally supposed to be in it, but last minute I got added in).
@@Izzy-cp8yt wow!!! That’s impressive!! Congratulations on that super power. I have two left feet, it’s so hard for me to pick up dances. In my mind I think I have it but then I see myself and I’m like nah!! Lmao!
@@BecomingVonnie thank you!! It's definitely a learning process! I couldn't count music until I was around 10/11 years old, despite dancing since I was 2. It made picking up the choreography much harder, because everything happens at a specific time in the music. It's also harder if you aren't mirroring what the teacher is doing. My advice, if you're interested, is give everything a name, even if it's not the "real" name. Being able to say/think "step slide kick kick jump step" or what have you in time with the music can help make it easier to remember what's coming next, similar to if you're memorizing song lyrics. My other trick is, if I'm practicing at home off a video, I try to watch it once and mark it in time with the video, then quiz myself to see how much I can do with just the music. Then I can watch it again, and start filling in the gaps, repeating the process. Oh, and don't worry about details immediately. Focus on the main "idea" of the movement first, ie "right foot steps forward, arms go up", and once you're confident with that much you can add in the details and flair. I have 25 years of experience and training, so I promise, it's a slow process for most people. But it is a skill that you can practice, not some magic innate gift!
@@Izzy-cp8yt Wow!! Thank you so much for those tips. I will screenshot this! Ohh and I can remember how to count music because I was looking into the DJ craft but I haven’t tried to add counts to practicing with dancing though. That tip to name the steps sounds really good for me though!! Surprisingly, the emoji “name” kind I’ve see on TikTok does not help lol.
@@BecomingVonnie lol I find the best names that help me are the ones I either make up or know as second nature. So if calling something "swoopy leg thing" is what makes you remember it, call it swoopy leg thing! I honestly written something very similar in my choreography notebook for dances I'm going to teach 😂 a lot of the tips I see on social media tend to rely on the dancer already having one or more existing skill sets, when the reality is that many of the dancers seeking advice on how to improve are probably not currently in possession of that existing skill set. The end result is the advice provides very little benefit to those who need it most! I hope some of this helps a bit, and more than anything, remember that dance is supposed to be fun. When it doubt, just do your best. Believe it or not, if you don't act like you messed up, most people won't even notice it.
Little girl your lucky to have a mom even willing to accept your dance challenge. I am a mom like that to my daughter. I thank God I have that close bond with all of my kids. Appreciate, respect and love each other as hard as you can. There aren't many of us out there anymore. 😊
Uhm, a trend (in this case dance moves) is created so people can enjoy, 'OUR DANCE'S ' let's chill dude. It's meant to be funny and not some serious competition.
