Top secret! Well, kind of. Let's talk about the engine that is going in Jumping Jack Flash, our nostalgia front engine dragster. Like the title says, "She's Real Fine My 409" is true, somewhat. This is Jimmy's version of a 409 small block Chevy. It started like as a 4 bolt main 400 and was bored .040 over to have a bore of 4.165" and combine that with a 3.750" stroke Ohio forged crankshaft you get 409 cubic inches of methanol burning excitement! This is going to be an exciting engine build; we are using some of Jimmy's leftover speed parts with a ton of new parts I acquired along the way. The only thing is, we will not be filming the engine build process. I know I told you in previous videos I planned on taking you along the entire journey with this project, but Jimmy has some speed secrets he wants to remain "top secret" with this engine. I get it, his decades of "go fast" knowledge have been hard earned and his shelf full of trophies proves that.
So, the big question is this, what are we using for parts in this high horsepower engine? Let me tall you want our recipe consists of to make power. Crankshaft is an Ohio forged 3.750" stroke unit that has been balances. Pistons are JE forged and the rods are Manley Super 70 aluminum with ARP hardware. The engine block is an early 70's 400 that has been decked, bored .040 over to 4.165" and has been plateau honed for the double moly Total Seal rings, lots of other top secret machine work inside too! Oil pump, oil pan, pickup, and oil deflector are all high speed Milodon units. Bearings for the cam, crank, and rods are Clevite, King, and Vanderwell. Timing cover is an old Hilborn unit and the adjustable timing gearset is a Cloyes true double roller setup. Gaskets are by Fel-Pro and Mr. Gasket. All the hardware and studs going in this engine build are by ARP, high quality stuff and very strong! Camshaft is a billet roller from Howard's, the pushrods, springs, retainers, and roller lifters are also Howard's pieces. The valves are titanium Manley and are 2.05 intake and 1.65 exhaust. The cylinder heads are what Jimmy used in his last race engine, they are a set of Pro Line heads that have been milled, angle cut, and have extensive porting done to them, they flow a ton! The methanol will be fed through a vintage Hilborn mechanical injection setup and the ignition is a Vertex magneto with Taylor wires, Autolite and NGK spark plugs will be used to light the candles. Exhaust is a set of vintage swept up "zoomies" and will cackle quite loudly!
Now you can see why I say this will be a fast dragster, all these parts combined with Jimmy's performance proven know how should really make for a good combination at the dragstrip. Oh, before I forget, the overall compression ratio is 14.2:1. Drag racing this rocket on wheels will be a dream come true, I am really getting excited to match race and lay down some high RPM smokey burnouts! Many people have asked me what ET we will run, but to be honest, I have no idea! That being said, I would love to be the "no name" under dog" to match race @FinnegansGarage this summer in his wild Hemi powered Chevy gasser named Blasphemi, that would be a dream race for me. I have learned a lot along the way with this project in a very short time, Jimmy has been a great mentor. Now I need to learn to tune Hilborn fuel injection and drive this car, I have some big shoes to fill if I am going to be up to Jimmy's standards! Stay tuned my rowdy friends, firing this engine up isn't that far off. Be there or be square, 2 Hacks Garage is about to go fast fast fast and now you know why we say the is our real fine 409! This little big small block will make a ton of horsepower and definitely sing the RPMS's! Send it
