Following my recent 'Epica' reaction (check it out if you haven't already 😬) I was swamped with requests and recommendations for 'Nightwish'. I said I'd make a video so here it is 👍

Hello Melvin Thinks ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. Hello Nightwish Army reporting from the Netherlands. Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish. They are from Finland. And they make Symphonic Metal. What you've heard here is just the tip of what this band can do. Nightwish really hits you in your heart. And that's what makes this band so unique. Her name is Floor Jansen and she is Dutch. @@patricialouk6650 The band did not start calling the fans as an Army, it was the fans themselves who started to call themselves a "Nightwish Army" decades ago - the idea was of course copied most likely from Kiss (which I am a fan and a very long time Army member), mind you, Kiss does not have a patent of the word army even when associated with fan base, they can be say to have taken it into use as the first band of the world, or did they really, anyone studied this??

Hello Melvin. I am a 73 year old Scouser, who has been into music since a very early age. Played in a heavy rock band for a while. Loved and enjoyed music of many forms for many years. I have been astounded by new listens quite a few times, but never to the extent of this [Nightwish]. There is a lot to learn about the band as a whole and also each and every member. It's quite a quest you've put yourself on - I hope you take it up! Getting into Nightwish is like playing Dungeons and Dragons for the first time - it's good, but just gets better each time you think you've got it! With NW, I don't think any of us will fully get it, because there is just so much of it! Nightwish Army Liverpool Division reporting for duty! Sir!

Hello! This was song 13 of 15 and Floor had been head banging, windmilling, dancing for an hour and ten minutes before this. In all styles of singing (she growls a little too) She took off a short instrumental for a costume change. Every song at this concert is great, you can't go wrong reacting to any of them. Nightwish is a great band. Check out their TRIBUTE to Pink Floyd's High Hopes, Marko the bassist is a great singer in his right. Welcome to Nightwish, enjoy your journey. 👍

Excellent reaction! Yes, you got it spot on with Emppu’s solo. Less is more indeed. And Jukka’s drumming is amazing. He beats those drums harder than a ginger stepchild😆! As you go further in your Nightwish journey you will see the importance of Marco on bass with his amazing vocals and the songwriting genius that is Thuomas on keyboards. As for Floor, you were right when you say there’s more to come. Trust me, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Looking forward to your next Nightwish reaction. Greetings from Oxfordshire.

It's nice to see another fellow Brit at last discovering probably the greatest symphonic metal band, Nightwish. This Wacken 2013 concert was very special as it introduced most of this 82,000 crowd to Nightwish's latest singer the six foot tall Dutchwoman Floor Jansen. She only joined mid tour in late 2012 with 48 hours to learn the setlist as she flew from The Netherlands to the USA. At this concert she had only recently returned to Europe after ten months with the band. You are right to say that she brings variety to this song as she does to so many. Every song was written for one of the previous singers Tarja (operatic) and Anette (pop) and Floor nails them all

Cheers Clive. I did a bit of Wikipedia research before I watched the video and was deliberating which version of the song/singer I should treat as my intro to Nightwish. But I had quite a few viewers recommended this version from Wacken via my Epica video, and am glad they did 😁 Thanks for the additional insight too 👍🤟

@@melvinthinks If you haven't encountered him yet, the band member not on stage at the time is another Brit, Troy Donockley. Floor can sing anything in any style. Troy does that with instruments, including a bit of singing too.

In a matter of moments expect a comment from a guy called Gabriel (he can sniff out new reactions like a shark to blood). He'll tell you almost everything you need to know about Nightwish and provide an ordered list of songs to react to. Listen to him, he knows his stuff. @@melvinthinks hey Melvin,some pro reactor tips to keep from getting down thumbs, #1 keep in mind that NW & Floor videos rarely ever get blocked, after a pause try to go back a bit before resuming to keep song continuity & so none of the many transitions NW is known for will not be missed,your viewers will appreciate it :) also pausing mid vocals will get some down thumbs best not to. but welcome to the best band and singer of our time,this was but a very small taste of what NW & Floor will thrill you with. cheers there are many great female vocalist in the world, then there are a few exceptional ones ,then there is Floor Jansen, Floor Jansen formerly of AfterForever & ReVamp who in 1999 started attending the Rock Academy in Tilburg and then at the National Conservatory in the Netherlands. Biggest rabbit hole in music you are staring into. Nightwish go all the way from acoustic, folk music to thrash metal. And all at an insanely good level. If you want to try a more metal song from Nightwish, look at one called Romanticide - personally, i reckon you should meet the bass player marco and his voice - Ever Dream would be a good follow up.

At the time of video Floor was on a temp contract to finish the tour for the previous singer. (Everyone knew by then she would be hired permanent if a deal could be reached.) The break in the middle is called an interlude. (symphonic music term) Sadly the drummer retired after this tour with some health issues due to sleep problems..

I absolutely agree with you, about phones in concerts!!!! Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting (Power belt) and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. In the girl's defence, she wasn't just standing and she only took one pic. As tt whole concert back then, take another look especially during the quieter moments. No smartphone overkill and you can even see old school lighters coming out. All in the past now ;) There's a fun video btw, with Floor scolding a crowd in South America for the behaviour you described. Nightwish are amazing and I adore Floor for being a great singer and the wonderful person she is (met her twice). That said, as a band in their current lineup, I prefer Epica.

@@melvinthinks You mention that Floor doesn't just sing opera, neither does Simone. Epica has many tracks where Simone doesn't sing in in her opera voice. Among which many beautiful ballads. I like the band interaction of Epica and the fact they all write songs, versus Tuomas (brilliant as he is) writing most, if not all songs, for Nightwish. Especially now Marko (the bass player/second singer) has left the band two years ago. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of both bands, just if I had to rank them in their current lineups ... It is all personal preference of course, but I recommend listening to more songs of both. They both have a huge catalog.

Greetings. Welcome to the family! Well, if you can already tell, symphonic metal bands use their orchestral counterparts to keep them in pace. That said, Nightwish doesn't tour with an orchestra, so the London Philharmonic Orchestra records their tracks at Angel Studios, London along with London's The Metro Voices and Young Musicians Children's Choir. Nightwish then uses the backing tracks live so they really have no time or room for showboating as far as long runs on the bass, ridiculous guitar solos, or drum solos. They all just play the songs as close to the studio recordings as possible with some minor changes from time to time. So guitar solos have to be in the pocket provided by the song. Besides, Emppu says shredding on lead solos is over rated and unnecessary. Keyboard player writes all the songs and lyrics. Whitney Houston? That's a first. Everyone else says the "E" word, or mentions the singer's name whose initials are A. L. and whose total number of letters is 6. Anyway, you are in for a fcking treat. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Nightwish helped create symphonic metal and was and still is the most successful band of the subgenre. The first singer Tarja Turunen was the model of Simone Simons. The band disappears in the middle of the song because only backtracks are playing. Without backtracks, Nightwish would have to tour with a symphony orchestra and an opera choir. The recordings are from these. This is one of drummer Jukka Nevalainen's last concerts. Shortly after starting the recordings for the next album, he had to give up due to chronic insomnia. He asks his friend Kai Hahto to take over temporarily. He is not returning and is now in the management of the band. Kai became his successor. Floor has been the temporary help here for 10 months. Internally, she has already been hired as the number three singer. There is no studio recording of any of the songs at this concert with her. The first studio album with her was not released until 2015. Floor usually sings a mix of pop and opera. She never said that Tarja was her model. It was the journalist (Daniel from Wikimetal Brasil) who said that after she named a few bands as her influences. (Lacuna Coil. Nightwish, Kamelot etc). Most Dutch female singers from metalbands are influenced by Anneke van Gierbergen (The Gathering), Tuomas told in an interview that he wanted a band with a female singer after he heared The Gathering. I have nothing against Tarja, she is a great singer and perhaps even better than Anneke, but Anneke opened a lot of doors for female fronted metal bands.

Hi again. I commented before but this just came to mind..... You mentioned your intro to Epica was Consigned To Oblivion. They actually do travel with their own orchestra and choir. Kind of sad that with such an amazing song, they didn't take a moment or 2 to show their counterparts. Such a song should demand that they show you "Epica" in its entirety. You'll see it though. That said, I recommend a duet... Simone and Floor Jansen? "Sancta Terra" live at Retrospect. You're gonna love it! But we'll see what the comments point to. 😊❤️🤘🤘
