i know pica is common but i wonder how common it is to have cravings for these type of items. Like i wonder if its even realistic. When i had pica i only craved ice and dirt (i didnt eat dirt btw that’s disgusting)

I have strong craving for dirt I have eaten dirt but haven't in a long time .I used to eat cigarette ashes before. I grew up very poor and I heard dirt and ashes cravings are because you're missing certain vitamins or something which makes sense in my case

I have pica and yes it's generally like a category of non-foods, like paper/wood items, metallic objects, rocks, etc.

@@bunnywavyxx9524 yep, i'm studying psychology and in definition on dsm-5-tr, pica syndrome is a syndrome that makes someone eat non-edible things, like paper, it can be as of pleasure, escapism, hunger and other things but i've never seen someone with pica syndrome eat more than one non-edible thing.

Google shows me you either have PICA when being a young toddler just curious to taste the world around you, or when you are a pregnant woman with severe iron deficiency. Most of the stuff she ate countained iron(Iron pins, screwdriver, dirt), so her body just told her she was unhappy and/or/because of being severely malnutritioned(women tend to watch their diet much mor than men, eating less animal products despite needing way more than men due to menstrual/pregnancy reasons). At least that's my take on it.

It doesn't just occur in pregnant women. There was a case in the US years and years ago where a little girl had it and died after ingesting paint chips filled with lead. She ate them while playing outside on the porch of their apartment building (the tenants were unaware of this extremely toxic paint and led to a lawsuit on the apartment owner's part for failing to disclose about the danger). The little girl's family had come to the United States from Uganda and, like many children from there, was very malnourished because her family hadn't had access to a lot of food. After years of being hungry, she was tempted to also start eating nonedible things, especially since the paint chips had a sweet taste, and the mother was unaware of the problem until the girl died in the hospital and an autopsy had been performed.

yea Adam made good point of that at the start, and a bit at the end. But to be fair the movie is a bit wild with the use of Pica disorder. With a 10m recap prolly fine to make some jokes and keep people from taking the very sad tale too deeply.
