Many seniors struggle with falls and losing their balance because of undiagnosed binocular vision dysfunction. This can affect people of all ages, but is increasingly common in seniors. This is not a problem of clear vision, which is why people are often told their vision is fine. But if the eyes don’t work properly together, and if depth perception isn’t properly calculated these issues can cause problems with falling and losing balance.

Vestibular physical therapy can be super important. One thing that we’ve learned though is that a lot of vestibular rehab actually needs the visual system to work properly. If the visual system works properly, the vestibular rehab does exactly what it should. Many of the patients we see have plateaued or not seen the results. They expected from vestibular rehab, simply because the Visual system has been in the way. So once we treat it, we send them back for their vestibular rehab to be done.

Absolutely brilliant. I work in geriatric long term care and this is something that is commonly missed. The social repercussions are drastic - they're basically made to sit or lie down on a pressurized alarm mat that blares if they try to get up bc "walking is a fall risk." It's heartbreaking to watch & I recommend to family members that an outside, in depth eye exam & ENT appointment would be the first, best step for their loved ones bc this very much IS an unbelievably common issue and is largely overlooked by in house staff Drs. They always want to put it down to "frailty ," dementia &/or Parkinson's/Parkinson's like movement issues WITHOUT further investigation. Ruling out peripheral vision, depth perception & inner ear issues should ALWAYS be a priority before assuming someone is incapable of meaningful, safe mobility, most especially in seniors who rapidly lose mobility and atrophy much quicker than someone even 5-10yrs younger. Our elders should always be our top priority, as without them we wouldn't be here. ❤

The stop mobility alarm is alarming! I met up with that when I was hospitalized for a stroke 5 years ago. I was able to walk with a walker. In fact they insisted on it but only if I was with staff. That would have been fine if staff was available when I had to walk but they were understaffed. I guess frequent need to pee was part of the stroke so I had to go immediately and about every hour. That didn't work out at all. Thank God I am almost normal again.

A lot of children can benefit from this too. I’ve seen a child so wobbly, couldn’t run or climb stairs. One insurance company did nothing for her. We were all convinced it was her eyes. The parents switched insurance, got a prescription for glasses and overnight could stair climb and run all with better balance. The ophthalmologist of the previous insurance health network gave us an inservice and said something to the effect that children so young aren’t driving or taking SATs so basically it was not as a big a deal…uh, falling and nearly having a head injury is a big deal.

I'm a 66 year old woman who really appreciates this information, big time!! I'd like to add that my own balance problems got much worse with the combination of age and keeping my head in the downward position when using my phone all day long. I live in a big city (Milano, Italy) and it's horrible to say, but one has to keep one's head down even on long daily walks, because of the dog poop minefield that our sidewalks are here. All day with one's head down, turns into balance issues when one finally stands up straight. I wish this was a joke, but unfortunately it's not. This balance problem has gotten so bad that after seeing this, I'm going to make an appointment with my eye doctor right away. MANY thanks for this info!!! 💯💯💯👁️

Scared the living daylights out of me!!! The very next day I made a doctor's appointment and got a prescription for EDOF (Extended Depth of Field) lenses for a new pair of glasses. Then had to get a second pair with something called progressive lenses. I'd never had ONE ISSUE with my vision in my entire life, so I sure didn't expect any of this!! I am 71, had cateract surgery and had a multifocal lens implanted in my right eye. It was a disaster, bright lights, blurred vision and stange black spots and yeah my equilibrium is off and I am tired all the time. If I look without glasses there is a huge difference between tight and left eye vision. My left eye was implanted with a normal 1 focus lens. Vision is better but still my eyes feel like they are constantly trying to refocus. The surgeon does not know why this happened to my right eye, but does not want to replace that lens. It has been very frustrating. I was better off just with the slight cataracts. OK rant over.

It was only because I happened to have a migraine and wasn’t able to compensate the day I went to the eye doctor that he realized I needed a prism. The day I got my new glasses, I discovered that depth perception was more than just knowing the relative sizes and positions of objects.

@@abbystarheart1 I wish I could tell you more! Because of the migraine, that day is pretty fuzzy. My problem is that I see slightly double. A very slight prism in one of my lenses makes a huge difference for me. The last time I got glasses, I had to fight to get the doctor to include it in my prescription.

I have lazy eye in both eyes. I had surgery when I was 12, My eyes were then ok until I was 16, and lazy eye came back. Years later, I was asked if I'd like to have the surgery again, I said no. I'm now 63, still have lazy eye, plus light cataracts on my eyes. I need prism glasses, only my medical insurance won't pay for them. Regarding migrains, I've had migraines since I was 10 or so, They still come & go. Migraines can be caused by eye strain, and other eye issues, but can also be a warning for a up coming stroke. Be very careful regarding migraines.

Had that happen when they put correction for astigmatism, the doctor kept brushing it off saying "you'll get used to it" then got hard contact lenses (RGP) without astigmatism and it went away. Couldn't wear glasses for years. Finally ordered glasses online direct from China WITHOUT astigmatism correction and it's totally fine.

Another issue that I have asked nurses and doctors about and most do not know is called either postprandial hypotension or postprandial hypertension. What this is is about 30 minutes after a meal your blood pressure can go high or low and cause you to have nausea dizziness and a fall. I now believe that a lot of seniors fall because of this because it's not well known and they need to stay seated or reclined for an hour at least after eating.

If you can, walk down the stairs “backwards” while facing the stairs. Still hold the railing for safety and stability, of course. That way, you lean forward toward the stairs, and if you fall, you’ll fall onto your knees on the stairs in front of you - instead of face forward down the flight of stairs. Practice on a few steps at a time until the movement is smooth. I had to learn due to a knee injury which didn’t allow me to walk down stairs the regular way. Best wishes!

@Aksel27
@Aksel27 3 месяца назад
@@naomiv7133 That's also true. The steam rises and creates a vacuum which lifts the air away from you and toward the ceiling and fan. The shower curtain prevents new air from entering, so you're just stuck with no air. Solution: open the shower curtain a little bit and open the door to the bathroom or a window in the bathroom. Or just take colder showers.

@@Aksel27 I agree with all the above comments. I too got dizzy, weak and breathless during long hot showers and I'm young. I'd come out gasping for air. I found taking a drink of water ready with me helped, and opening the shower curtains a little like you said. You explained what's happening so clearly thanks for that. I only found out years after having these dizzy spells during showers that hot water reduces blood pressure. having shorter showers also helped me.

She had traditional in the left and it wasn't a problem. BUT, she's had to go in for 3 laser procedures since because of scarring that develops a fog-like coating on the replacement lens.
