I've worked in a resale thrift store for over 15 years. We always tried to price things within reason, so people could afford them. Now, the store is under new management and they seem to think everything is worth a ton of money. Antique furniture is priced twice of what it's worth, china and knick knacks priced like they're in a high end antique store. And we're not talking rare items here. Common things. I know antiques and collectibles and the pricing is outrageous. And what happens? It sits there, takes up space and even with a sale it still sits there. We have a lot of items coming in everyday, we need to move this stuff. If people want to pay those kind of prices, they can just go to the mall, dept. stores, or high end antique shops. The word THRIFT is no longer applicable.
The same thing is happening in Australia. Some of them are priced dearer then you can get it new at Kmarts, target etc. I noticed the increase probably in the last few weeks.
Our thrift stores have went up because of resale people like this guy and so many others. They have told me if they can sell it for that price then so can we !!!!
Teresa Camp What these stores don't seem to get is that they may have 100 people as foot traffic a day versus millions of buyers online. The odds of someone looking for a high price collectable is pretty slim in a little shop.
I agree! I used to buy stuff on Ebay, but with the cost of food, etc. so high I can't afford much there. Prices have gone up at thrift stores too! Makes me sad. Profit for some, not for us.
What a sweet lady to show you things she was passing up!! For some reason I thought this was going to feature a lady telling you off because your cart was in her way or something! Gosh, maybe I’ve spent too long living in the city, surrounded by senseless rudeness. Great video, so fun to live vicariously through your shopping trips! (Btw, maybe a dumb question, but what do you mean by “comp”?).
Just to share I use pool noodles. I cut them up and or cut them down lengthwise for shipping. I live in Florida so they are super cheap especially this time of year. Hope that helps have a great day. 👍
The Goodwill closest to my home is unorganized a lot of junk and not sure who is pricing (even damaged items) just ridiculous- occasionally I find a few treasures and craft items🤔
As a person who does villages at Christmas… I will buy buildings that have a small chip or are missing pieces because I can always creatively hide or disguise it with my trees, snow, etc. Just thought I’d let you know! ❤️
Yeah, I've sold some damaged christmas village items in the past. Usually from collection buyouts. I typically have to discount them pretty heavy though so it's why I don't buy them individually. Appreciate you watching and the comment!
My Goodwills look nothing like this. I have also seen items with the goodwill sticker over a tag sale sticker & it was the same price. Some things are very overpriced
My granddaughter abd i went to GW Monday. They wanted 7.99 for jeans that the knees wore out, not distressed but worn out. Everything in the store is outrageous. I will shop at our local Mission and try to help our community.
Same here. Ill tell this story til he's 80. But I once when my son was a baby we had an emergency where he needed a whole new outfit I walked into goodwill thinking I could grab something cheap. Tell me how I walked out went across the street to dollar general and bought a whole NEW outfit cheaper than goodwil. I've heard goodwill ceos are PAID
Goodwill's are getting crazy with the pricing on almost everything. I wish they went back to being a nonprofit organization. But their rich CEO would never let that happen.
The furniture flipper in me was really wanting that wooden corner shelving unit. Oh, the flip I could do with that. Thank you for sharing your adventure. :)
I had those Mr. Christmas star lights and the candy cane ones. I bought them in 1995, they were still working in 2018 when I donated them, so they do last a long time.
Salvation Army just opened right next to goodwill here in my town. I am so elated. Salvation Army will hopefully put goodwill out of business. I made donations to goodwill a few times. There is a bright light that flashes in your face while being monitored..they are monitoring people that give donations as if they are criminals! I made donations again last week of some real good high end stuff but I turned right and gave to Salvation Army instead. They will get my donations from now on!
Thanks for acknowledging something good about someone else , these days people are quik to cast judgement or label some stupid new name on somebody like Karen that these kids recently came up with for cop callers ....l get it
Oh dang Dustin! That star trek glass you picked up is a glass we found at my husband's moms house just a few days ago! How random is that. Crazy, but it happens a lot watching you. When we started picking we found some great bolo's right off the bat. Its been a lot of fun! Thanks for all the knowledge, we love your videos, and I love seeing your wife in videos. We've laughed bc my husband is a lot like you and your wife and I have dyed hair, I had it purple too, but recently went back to blue. Adios, from Austin, TX!
Hey Susan, yeah I thought the glasses were neat but hard to make money on those on ebay at 8 bucks buy cost. I hope you and your husband are doing well! Thanks for watching!
Hi Dustin! Another nice haul! How is it that you always have no one pouncing on the new carts when they come out? In my local GW's, the people who bring out the stuff make you wait until they put it on the shelves... and tons of people follow them around, making a free for all, and all the good stuff is gone before it gets near the shelves.
Maybe picking that receiver up for $1 would have been a good idea. If it sells for $100 normally you could have put it up for $30 plus shipping for parts and still made a buck. I don't like selling electronics because of multiple returns but I will if it's for parts especially vintage units. You may not want to fix it but there are a lot of people who do it as a hobby or they need specific parts from it for their other unit. I've had success selling vintage electronics for parts and the best thing is I never get it returned because they know it's not working and have intentions to fix it.
I got a small Dept 56 porcelain hinged box once for about $3 and it went for between $10-20, not a huge sale but it was a very small item that was easy to ship so that was nice.
I buy most of my household items and clothing at goodwill/salvation army; I can obtain MUCH higher quality goods for my dollar. I love wool/cotton clothing, but it SHRINKS like crazy sometimes, I can purchase a pre-shrunk item and make sure it fits before taking it home. It seems so many people buy new things every season and simply discard "last year's" items. Some people have TOO much money. My favorite thrift store buy: A Nordstrom's cashmere sweater. New with tags. "On sale" at $365. Goodwill price $4. My daughter used it as pajamas for a year or so until it fit well enough to wear outside. I get Carhardtt coats for $35. I know you feel me. Best of luck on your sales! I see so many great deals on things I don't need personally. Hope your business takes off
I recently bought a long wool womens coat that has real fur around the hood that I'm sure would have sold for at least $500 brand new. I got it for $19.99.
I was in a Goodwill yesterday and they were selling empty Misses Butterworth bottles, empty liquor bottles and actual Dollar Store items for double the price.
Thumbnail got me!!! Awesome 🤣 I hood things in my cart and sort after. Makes it much easier. Majority of the times I take each item back where they were found.
I'm new to your channel, and I'm enjoying your videos! I'm a long time thrifter/treasure hunter! Your stores are so clean and organized! I'm from Chicago, and unfortunately, our Goodwill and Salvation Army are very disorganized and dirty. And even after many years of suggestions, the SA store continues to STAPLE the prices on to the clothes! It doesn't matter how gently you try to remove the staple, it inevitably leaves holes. 😔
I work at one in Central California and it’s so busy it’s hard to keep organized, and we have 5 people on the floor putting our clothes all day and organizing
Gave a like for the simple fact that you returned your cart. Subbed because I'm cleaning out my hoarder-mom's house/storage units (with her permission) and I'm interested in selling. But I am truly overwhelmed by the clutter...
It can be overwhelming for sure! If you're trying to get it up on ebay I would advise just getting it listed as fast as possible to move as much of it as you can quickly. Or bulk it out to someone like me in your area.
I like hearing the backround of things, it's interesting! And don't let people get to you, on here you'll hear a hundred different opinions and they're probably all wrong lol. I used to sell on eBay too, so I know. Whomever buys that item will be very happy to get it at a lower price, and as far as you making a profit, EVERYBODY in the medical business makes a HUGE profit, so there's no reason for you not to make a profit too, and a much smaller one, so they should shut up lol. I enjoy your videos very much :D
I know where each one of those stores are at! I recognize them all. Store #2 used to be a roller rink! I may have to go get those Star Trek glasses for my hubby!
Nice video...lots of things I've yet to pick.... still learning. I focus on video games and electric stuff...but I'm going out of my comfort zone slowly. Got a pair of motorcycle Boots yesterday for 12 and sold for 80 Still learning about clothes, so started a Poshmark account 🤞 What Was crazy is all the folks now following me...I had to silence my phone for several hours 😅 As I was message bombed ... Thank you again
Thank you for the heads up on that. I lost a sale because one thing I am new to eBay. Sweater was 11.99 really cheap. The lady that wanted to buy it was in CA. I’m in FL. The dang postage would be more than the sweater. I have only sold one thing and that was because my grandson seen a shirt he liked and he bought it. Isn’t that sweet? So at least now I can say I have sold something. Can someone advise me?
Back when I was reselling clothes items on Ebay I would put the items in a very large zip top plastic bag and roll the item up from the bottom to express most of the air, then zip-closed the top. It worked almost as well as those vacuum bag sealers and I'd have a relatively flat item, then it could go in a mylar mailing envelope relatively cheaply. Beat having to place a fluffed-up sweater in a medium USPS box and having to pay 15+ dollars to mail.
2013 to 2017. I worked in Shepardvill Kentucky which I would go to Louisville Kentucky and buy used books, but then those stores shut down due to amazon . Well, I am happy to say, I found so many rare books at goodwill. Downey California
Went to our local Goodwill. Frankly, most of it was new stuff or pure junk. If there was anything good, I certainly didn't see it. But getting Dept. 56 is a good find, if it's cheap enough.
The managers are instructed to keep back ANYTHING that might be worth money. Most of the owners have antique stores that they take them to, and sell for profit.
In a lot of cases, the managers or people pricing don't have the expertise or knowledge to be pricing anything. I've seen too much about what goes on in the back rooms of a thrift store. One supervisor was selling stuff to dealers out the back door. Of course, they were caught and fired but I'm sure this still goes on.@@jenniferkay9789
@@jamesfournier3458 I know of a supervisor from a Salvation Army, in one state, who was stealing donations, to place in his personal antique shop, in another.
I wish there was a way that you can check out inventory before you go to the thrift stores, I've been looking at all my local ones to find Kirby vacuum cleaners, expensive machines that you can find for as low as $9 and usually all it needs is a belt and bags for it and it'll run perfectly.
I'm not sure about Goodwill's or other thrift stores but value village or the ones on my state..but value village will pay big brothers big sisters a by the pound amount of the items that the big brother big sisters trucks bring in from their purple donation bins. they don't pay for baby items beside clothes really because there is to many recalls for them to be liable for. My son's father use to go around and collect all the time from the donation bins at certain properties, and they get to put their bins at these store with the stores permission, and the agreement that they will clean up within a certain amount of feet around the bins. So they do pay a price for a good amount of donations but by the pound, not sure if it's just clothing or everything but the big brother big sisters employees separate the household an clothing items that are loose. If your interested in knowing more I can ask what it use to be but could of changed over the years. The items people bring right to the store are different and they make pure profit off though.
Unfortunately, the prices at Goodwill (and other thrift store chains) is totally dependent on your area. Living in an upscale neighborhood, *NOTHING* is under $10. Well..records are and some shirts on the racks...but household goods all start at $10 and go up from there...and anything of value is always behind glass. Saw a Swatch watch behind lock and key for $29...I think that was more than it sold for when it was new back in the 1980s.
The stores you visit are so clean! The thrift stores in St Augustine Florida are dumps which surprises me. Wow! Your Goodwill like many others on RU-vid are amazing. The Goodwill in northeast Florida are filthy and dumps.
2:40 wow look at that wood floor there’s so many places that would love to have a swing dancing floor like that we had a bunch of close in the last few years and there’s only about 4 - 5 left in St. Paul Minneapolis area that have a really nice wood floor.
VERY fortunate to find such excellent items. I see lots of people "picking" Goodwill et al. Profits such as seen here have to be unusual. True getting anything at a good price but the reward is finding someone who is willing to buy at almost retail price.
Let me tell you 56's are MUSTLY VALUEBLE, with Small Missing Parts because alot of them will NEVER be made again.!! I have 1000's of them and People come to me Wanting me to SELL THEM the House's & Other ITEMS because they Can't get Them. But Sorry Don't SELL, COLLECT THEM !!! LOVE THEM ❤ 😍 💖 !!!
Hi Dustin, I started watching you when you bought that huge Dept56 haul at a garage sale. Can you give an update on how that turned out? Did you sell everything? How much profit did you make?
I had two big collection buyouts at estate sales this year. We have moved the majority of it at this point. I don't have the numbers in front of me but it's been solid overall.
I typically try to get it listed right away. It will sell year round. When you get to the Christmas season you should sell most of your good items that are left.
So this page popped up and started playing. I see you going into the salvation army and it looks so familiar...As your walking around I'm looking at the floor. It's a small world.
Hay my friend,a goodwill near me,a dollar tree item $1.25 there price $8.00 OUTRAGEOUS . Thats good you can check things,, the stores near me tape most things and can't open.I LIKE YOUR SHOW. ENTERESTING
