I just love how many details and background stories this drama gives to every small character, including a "villain" side character like Zhenshu. Yes she is complicit in many cruel criminal acts of her master/princess. But she is from a struggling commoner family, with elderly parents who she knows deep in her heart that she will NEVER see again. When she left Korea, she knew that she would never return home again. She is a powerless foreigner trapped in a lonely and dangerous place. She doesn't have the basic freedom and rights to make her own moral choices. In addition, she is very loyal to Jia because they are from the same clan and same country, and because they share the same fate of being sent off to a foreign empire only as political tools and child-bearing machines. As a lowly maid who can't escape this place that is essentially a glorified prison (her family will definitely be punished if she abandons her master which basically equals betraying her country), if she has to help someone, then of course she will choose to help her own princess. This is a very powerless woman whose fate is entirely not in her hands. It won't excuse her crimes, but I understand why she does what she has done. Both she and her master Jia have so many burdens heavier than a mountain crashing on their shoulders. Jia is clearly descending into madness which is not a surprise. Who wouldn't be slowly driven mad in a foreign land surrounded by strangers who may or may not want to kill you and your children. I would never want to live like that, no matter how luxurious the material environment is.
