I love it when non-Asian come a long. They learn about the culture. I used to invite all my non-Asian friends to my college Asian club. I was one of the leaders.
I was actually in a similar situation. When I was in high school one my Ethiopian friend told me come celebrate one of their holiday. It was in the park with around 200 black people and I was the only asian guy there and most of them were staring at me. It was one of the most awkward situation I've been on. But the kids were very adorable and kind.
I keep seeing people in the comments say that she has the eye shape of an asian. She's moroccan, and as one of them I am confident that she has moroccan eyes. It always confused me whenever she pops up anywhere on my phone because she looks like a moroccan actress who's playing the role of a foreigner (her hair [not the currently displayed in the video, instead it's when she straightens her hair] and fashion choice are completely different from here and that's what tripped me the most). Edit: I literally have friends who have the exact same eye shape, saying they are passable as asian eyes is weird but understandable if I consider a lot of things.
US and US-influenced cultures can have seemingly strange perceptions of ethnicity, but we need to remember that everyone perceives the differences between peoples differently the great majority of east-asians have an epicanthic fold, it's what makes some people describe the eyes as 'slanted' there are many east-asians in the US, and the two other major population groups, west african and north-europeans in the US don't often have the folds, so to them it's heavily defining of east asians it is however a trait that manifests more-or-less similarly in different populations with different probabilities Amazigh people have higher probabilities than other north africans, from here in eastern Europe i can say i associate it with Hungarian people, and obviously there is the Khoisan people and hundreds of other examples of groups of people so basically, someone can let their eyes speak but it won't tell a detailed history of their family tree and heritage
But also Björk for example. She looks very Icelandic but at the same time, outside the Icelandic point of reference, she looks asian. Most cases, it's the eyes.
where in southeast asia? probably indonesia or Malaysia? can be because those two countries were influenced by India and the arabs, and to a degree also got mixture from them but majority of southeast asians dont look like that nor even near that. I know this being a southeast asian myself. @@alalalala57
@@user-sz2ez8tk1yit's true. I do find interesting the reactions tho. So many people have done so much worse and have gotten minimum backlash. People want to hate on pokimane but I don't understand why.
I used to have a church leader for highschoolers and was super pale with a slight accent I didn’t recognize at the time. I was the only colored kid of the group from a foreign background so you can imagine my reaction when he just casually mentioned that he was born and raised in South Africa lol. Did my homework after that.
I remember having to explain to a Bangladeshi friend of mine that the white people in South Africa weren't native to there. She legitimately thought that there just happened to be a clade of white peoples endemic to the area there.
@@sharielane so funny. We have similar issues with ethnic minorities in my country the uk. Africans genuinely call themselves european ethnic groups like English, french etc💀😂

As a half moroccan, so many people have a basic ignorance of Morocco, so this whole comment section feels like my entire life when trying to explain my background and all the confusion (and extra confusion because looking light with green eyes) when meeting people...😂
@@TheBehm08 goddammit why did I know instinctively that his asian side is Filipino? 😅 i swear Filipinos when mixed with other, they barely resemble Filipino. It's like we're the base paint.😅
I do often wonder if there was a huge Asian influx of RU-vidrs at one time because the majority of RU-vidrs I watch that became famous clearly have Asian descent. Most of them even live together!
Probably bc she rlly plays her look up to be more asian. When she was at that event around the asian ppl in pictures she even squinted her eyes more it was weird asf…..
I think that actress from the Philippines called Ivana is also half-Morrocan so you can use her as a referrence for comparison. Poki looks more Filipino than her.
@@basicone324 just because the continent shes from is africa dosent mean her country is african☠️ lmao she is from Morocco which is an arab country making her arab not african
or too embarrassed that she ripped off another brand but used enriched whatever flour they used for the "vitamins" that make it more expensive *stupid hand gestures*
@@gwTheoshe didnt rip them off. She rebranded them. It's the most common practice anyone can do in business. You find a product and change it slightly then sell it at a profit. Toatzy (the cookies she rebranded) did the exact same thing and I can guarantee the company they did it too also did the same thing because cookies have been around for ages. There are plenty of reasons to dislike her right now but you might as well be accurate about it
@@truelegend4310 I'm just being factual dude. I think she handled the whole situation in a really scummy way but her rebranding the cookies isnt a cause for complaints. Mr Beast did the exact same thing with beast burger and everyone was more than willing to accept it as normal (beast burger did have it's own separate issues but nobody cared about the fact he was just slapping his name on someone elses sandwich). That's just what business is. The problem with pokis cookies is the outlandish price and her childish behaviour when called out on it.
The magic of using makeup to race swap when the context is necessary, she’ll look more Asian on this but will look whiter on stream. Methinks she’s a pick me

Same, throughout first, secondary and high school, I've almost always been the only Asian in my class... There's probably about 1 Asian every 100 students in the schools I've attended 😂
Something similar happened to me when I was in high school and I was invited to the lunch room by the counselor and all I see is my Hispanic friends and they said we were invited to the latinx youth festival, and every latina and Latino was invited in the school. I was the only black person there. I'm half black, half white. So I slowly raise my hand and let him know. I am not Latina and then he said, "Well, you could still go if you want to!😅"
Bro I'm mixed the same as well, none of me Mexican, Ecuadorian and Porta Rican I'm black until they daw my pops. They thought I just hated being Mexican haha. They was like hey u really are black!😅😂
Many of my family members look really Asian and we don’t claim it people just asume and we correct them but people base ethnicity on features. That’s wrong… features are just features and people are mixed and those feature get created differently.
I was one of the videographers for the Golden Gala event in nyc! She should’ve came! That would’ve been so cool to get to see her in person! Huge fan Pokimane!

Just to be clear, her name is Imane (ee-man) and so is Pokimane as in Pok-ee-man (it's NOT Poki-main). She is totally Moroccan, and some Moroccans have eyes that may look Asian but they are not genetically related (even if all people trace back to Africa but let's not go that far). In Morocco we speak Arabic (Moroccan Darija). The foundation is Arabic mixed with loanwords from Amazigh and French. Second language is Tamazight which has influenced the grammar in Darija, because the indigenous people of Morocco are Amazigh before the Arab conquest. Why other Arabs don't always understand us is because over a thousand years we've kept much of classical Arabic (Fus'ha) which are synonyms to many other words instead used in Levantine Arabic (middle east). It all boils down to how much exposure you get of Moroccans speaking and your fundamental knowledge of Fus'ha which no one really speaks today except in formal occasions such as TV news or academic studies. I wish Moroccans would learn how rich the Moroccan Arabic language really is and it's true roots in classical Fus'ha, just know that there are many synonyms and ways of expression in Arabic because its poetic nature.
