The reason 38 Special sounds so different in this one is because the original lead singer, Don Barnes, left the band in 1987. They brought in Max Karl to take over the vocals for this album shortly thereafter.
Fortunately, Don Barnes returned to the band by 1992. Unfortunately, tastes changed in the world of pop music, and they were unable to score another hit single, although they DID manage a minor rock track hit with Fade to Blue, which charted at #33 on the Mainstream Rock tracks chart, yet failed to chart on the Hot 100.
@@screwyootube1 Yeah I saw 38 Special in 2001, opening for Skynyrd in Huntsville, AL. They sounded great! One of my favorite concerts of all time, and I've been to many!
Please check my comment about their Southern Rock selections. They have reacted to 5 .38 Special songs band 0 Outlaws songs. Have you heard of The Outlaws?
@@keithrfield Delighted to hear you are interested. This is a band from the Seventies active about the same time as Skynyrd. Don't check out anything by the current iteration because the great guitar players that were in this band are now deceased. Here is a link to a live recording of one of their songs. Really, any song will do as long as it is from the Seventies version of the band.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2qqN3rw41UM.html
Important to note this is NOT Don Barnes, the usual lead singer, it’s Max Carl. Barnes left the band for five years in the late 80’s before coming back.
Nothing like 38 Special's sound. This is a great song (sadly, their last big hit, in 1989). If I had to pick the biggest song of theirs that you haven't done yet, it would be my favorite 38 Special song, "If I'd Been the One". "Chain Lightnin'", "Back Where You Belong", and "Teacher, Teacher" are also great ones.
This song was hugely popular at the same time my marriage was breaking up. I remember coming back to what HAD been my home to pack up my belongings. My philandering, soon to be ex husband played this song over and over!!! REALLY dude!!
The guy singing is Max Carl he also played with Grand Funk Railroad, he knows a thing or two about the history of music , very intelligent and talented . I recommend you watch this video on RU-vid: Grand Funk Railroad's Max Carl - Music Makers episode 105
@sillysnot I had no idea that Bryan wrote it - thanks for sharing. When I hear it in my head - I could totally see Bryan singing this as well. Totally his style.
38 special. The 1st time I heard them was when they were the opening act but don't remember who they were were opening for. We really liked them and rushed out to buy their album and then i don't know what happened to the. I do have a couple of their great songs in my now digital library. - "Caught Up In You" - & - "Hold On Loosely"
Back in 89 this song was dedicated to a ship that today I'm glad went by. But the emotion was heavy back then. No two-timing, more like what's consider today as a situationship. Aww it took me back, the magic of music.
You bet it was!!! Most of 38 Special songs were and still are great!! I'm 67 now and loved them in my early 20's and still love them. No offense to 38 special but no one can beat the Four Tops and The temptations. I was very young when they came out. I still love both of them. I was not a Beatles fanatic. Radio stations played I Wanna Hold Your Hand so much, that I still hate hearing it today.
As a radio disc jockey I always made it a point to insert this song into the playlist while doing my shift. Never got in trouble from the Program Director.
I also was a DJ when this song charted. Have to admit I was surprised the first time I heard it. Was expecting a Southern rocker of some sort. Turns out this is my favorite 38 Special song of all time. Also played it out of rotation a time or two while working the housewife shift, and never had a PD bust me for it.
This band was a BIG part of my teenage years....I loved them SO MUCH!! Their sound was so special. So many special memories tied to most of their songs....makes me want to cry thinking back. The 80's was such a magical time to be young.
I'm definitely a 38 Special fan... all of it. Like most other bands of the era, they more often than not didn't have just one signature sound. Don't forget that '70s and '80s music releases were heavily album oriented, and bands usually stretched themselves to include a variety of music types that could take you on a journey while listening to the whole album. Cherry-picking singles for personal playlists wasn't so much of a thing then (although I, for one, used to spend HOURS creating mix tapes by dubbing LP tracks to cassette... in real time)... so the artists built playlists into their albums to keep you interested through the whole journey.
Love 38. Special This was a huge hit, showcasing their softer side. If you want to rock more check out: what if i'd been the one, wild eyed southern boys, teacher, teacher, 20th century fox, chain lightnin', rock n roll strategy, and my favorite: Rebel To Rebel. You wont be dissapointed!
A girl I loved/adored/worshipped for a year left me on an October, Saturday afternoon ... out of the blue. That was October, 1975. I am still trying to figure it out. Broken. Heart broken. Never been the same. Ever. Why? Just why? We were 18. Now we're 66. And somewhere in the back of my mind, I yearn for her. I still love her. So many tears.
Not sure it's my favorite song but it's a hidden gem. Beautiful masterpiece. I saw 38 Special this past summer '23 and they did NOT disappoint. They played all they're hits, the crowd was rockin. AMAZING how good they still sound at their ages 🤯
As much as you guys love the Electric Guitar I'm surprised you haven't reacted to The Pulse live performance of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. Arguably the best gutair solo and my favorite of all time.
Most groups have a softer side, they can Rock out as well. just check out more of their songs👍 this is still a good tune 😎 Thanks for your channel I really dig you guy's!!
Love .38 Special, and totally forgot about this one. You're right, definitely not the norm for this band. But in the 80's all bands had to have a ballad!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Wife here..,Hey Guys.. This Band and song was HUGE in the eighties.., This paticular song really is a whole lot different.., They're really more "Pop Rockish" here than "Southern Rock" ..As popular as these guys were..This was their only number One hit..Thank You So Much for the Awesome Reaction💙
For some reason , this song just doesn't stand up with their big bangers. It's probably just me but it's MEH ..I do not even care for this other singer. Glad you and hubby love it .All that matters. I don't get the love for it. Wish I could..
Enjoying your reactions. A lot of bands used to do different styles - soft, slow, romantic for slow dances & just simple romance, perhaps real "personal human experiences" in life, perhaps not... whatever. Different people in varying life situations/experiences nonetheless, and then the faster songs for same or different kind of impact. It doesn't mean they've necessarily experienced these things themselves, may just be acknowledging that we all have different experiences in life. Artists & groups weren't tied to one tempo, message, or style per se. That's what made them unique and creatively great. Growing up, we enjoyed the creativity & versatility. To us it was normal & wonderful. Another great .38 Special song is "Caught Up In You". One of their best. Also, another song/video worth giving a listen is Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O4agsmOFga8.html
yeah 38 Especial is one of the iconic bands that started right mid 70S and this song were released late 80S and even nowdays they still sound incredible and touring around the world
I recommended this one a while ago; this was when Max Carl replaced lead singer Don Barnes on vocals for one album that came out in 1988. This song ended up being their biggest hit, released in 1989.
Another song on CVS's playlist in the past. Few other hits: "If I'd Be The One" "Fantasy Girl" "Back Where You Belong" "Chain Lightning" "Rockin Into The Night." Your reactions are always enjoyable and I'm really liking your movie reactions as well. Keep them coming :) Patreon Movie Suggestion: Clue (1985). Don't forget Christmas songs! Andy Williams--It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year and Happy Holidays. Another song suggestion: Journey--Can't Tame The Lion.
I guess you guys never see all of these comments, but this made me think of another recommendation:: Group: Restless Heart Song: Bluest Eyes In Texas(Official Video)--Harmonies are amazing!
38 Special was the first concert I ever went to during their Tour De Force tour. Seen them 3 times total, the last time this past August at a county fair in Minnesota. They may be older but they can still rock. You should listen to Teacher Teacher, you’ll love it.
The lead singer is Max Carl. He was with 38 Special from 1984-1991. Don Barnes was the original lead singer from the bands start in 1974 till 1987, when he pursued a solo career. When Max Carl left 1991, and Don Barnes rejoined the group in 1992 and is the only original member still with the band. If you want to check out another song that Max Carl sang lead on with 38 Special, listen to "The Sound of Your Voice" !
First time listened this song about 20 years ago and totally fell in love, everything in this song is perfect, the singer amazing voice and the amazing guitar player melodies!
I've always been a huge fan of ”southern rock”. Since the late 70s. When it comes to southern rock it's a small world. Look deeply. They all knew each other and were related one way or another. 38 Special was one of my VERY FAVORITE bands of this genre.
You are used to hearing Don Barnes sing. This was done at a time when Don had left the band, but he came back and is presently the only original member left from 38 Special. Try Chain Lightning. It's a pretty big song.
My favorite song from them I remember when they had heavy rotation on MTV (when MTV actually played music videos) their power ballad reached number 6 on Billboard pop singles chart in 1989
Thank you for the reaction... 😃Love this song... I don't know why but something about this song has always reminded me of Sam Cooke's song "Cupid". Not sure if it is a cord progression? The cadence of the lyrics... but I always want to break into "Cupid, draw back your bow... and let your arrow go..." 😜 One song I love that you haven't done by .38 Special yet is "Chain Lightning'". It is from their 1982 album Special Forces. The same album that brought you "Caught Up In You". Thank you and have a great day!
Really nice selection from .38 Special... haven't heard this one in a long time... a bit of Harmonies thrown in there too. :) Thx for the Reaction. Have a Great Week, You Guys! :)
This classic tune also reminded of some songs that I hope you check out soon: Robin Beck's "First Time", PM's "Piece Of Paradise", Paul Carrack's "Don't Shed A Tear", and Foreigner's Lou Gramm with "Just Between You & Me".
Like I’ve always said before, even with all of the 80’s rock, funk, dance , new wave, eclectic , synth beats, and everything else, though I still love all of that, it’s the love songs and power ballads from the 80’s that I cherish the most, and that I still listen to the most. And this was one of my favorites !
@@kenperkins7921 what band, 38 Special? Bands and artists sometimes don’t make it past the decades they were popular, because music changed. So feel you on that, because a lot my favorites didn’t make it in the 90’s because music changed. But you still got the music which you can still enjoy today.
I personally like the southern rock sound of .38 special. I remember this being a song for my parents and being disappointed by it when I was younger. I appreciate it more as I got older. One bit of advice about the content of the song: just don't do it. If your woman is leaving because you've been cheating, don't think playing song is a good idea. It will be like throwing gasoline on a fire. If you truly are regretful and contrite you just have to accept the consequences of your actions and try to build back some trust slowly. If she does decide to give you a second chance, don't ever let this song play. If it comes on the radio, change it. It will just be a reminder of your dirty deed and bring back all the pain YOU caused. You don't want that. If you are a cheater that gets a second chance, you must forget this song exists!
This song was actually written earlier in their career, however Don Barnes didn't think the song sounded like .38 Special so it sat around for years until Max joined the band and sang it.
I was surprised too. I thought I knew every 38 Special song, but I've never heard this one before. Very different from most of their music. Not a bad lost love ballad though. I like it.
Another Jacksonville band is Blackfoot….not sure if you reacted to them……Train, Train incredible harmonica…….and Highway Song has the typical southern rock build
Had this on a mixed tape I made in the late 80's followed by Madonna's Live to Tell. Every time I hear this, I'm always expecting that to play next. Ah, the memories.🙂
Donnie Van Zant was in the original band, and he is the brother of Ronnie Van Zant, lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, who died in a plane crash while on tour with a really old plane. ❤
This was after the original lineup changed. Only number 1 they ever had. But I loved the originals. I always felt like this was a 38 Special tribute band.
I remember when this song came out. I saw it on VH1, I think it was. I loved it from the first time I heard it and it became a favorite that is still up there in my favorite songs list. The weird thing is that 38 Special isn't known for songs like this, they're more rowdy southern rock, which sounds much different than this.
Believe it or not this was the song that officially introduced me to 38 Special's music despite hearing their earlier hard rock hits on the radio a lot as a kid
So if you two would dive a little deeper into the history of the singer Max (Groenenthal) Carl…you would find he was the lead singer and songwriter for the original Jack Mack & The Heart Attack. An R&B horn band that will knock your socks off! His work with that band was amazing. He’s now the lead singer for Grand Funk Railroad and has been for many years…
Still hard to hear without tearing up a bit... The primo 1980s emotional song that hits a certain memory in everyones lives... The experiences may have been different, but, the emotions are the same. This song taps that memory perfectly, even after all these years. 👍
