"What is wrong with him?" He is tired of being controlled by an abusive mother like Society. The sickness is anything that society considers outside what they want you to to. The Sickness is what you want and need to do.
@rainbowzebraunicornpegasus2962

@Bronze Wolf actually David has said in multiple interviews it has nothing to do with child abuse from his mother. If anything it was his father he had problems with but has buried the hatchet over that.
@ThaDarknyss
@ThaDarknyss 2 года назад
@@rainbowzebraunicornpegasus2962 there are also multiple concert videos where he "complains" about having to preface this song by saying it has nothing to do with his own mother or any mother, that as you said it's about society being the abusive 'mother' in the song.
@Alex-dh2cx
@Alex-dh2cx 2 года назад
@Bronze Wolf no, according to the guy who wrote and sang the song himself, mother is a metaphor for society. The guy actually felt bad that his mom who he had a good relationship with might listen to it. Sounds like you're just ignorant and like putting people down to make yourself feel better.
@inkenhafner7187
@inkenhafner7187 2 года назад
@Bronze Wolf maybe to you it's about your actual abusive mother. To all others it's about the experience to be let down or abused by persons we trusted or who were supposed to protect us. Make that parents, teachers, doctors, employers, spouses etc.

Not actually a song about his real life mother. "mother" is the embodiment of societal pressures to conform and censure to their ideals. The lead singer David has indicated this in live performances it is about society - not his mom. "The Sickness" is the growing resentment that many of us feel when we are cornered, trapped, held down etc, and feel like there is no escape from the dangers of societal conformity hivemind policing. The song is 20 years old, but it's much much bigger problem now than it ever was.

IMO, the Sickness is the rage you have built up inside when your raised in an abusive family. And the song is about when you've been pushed to that breaking point where that suppressed rage can't be controlled anymore. For a completely different change of pace from them. Check out the Live version of "A Reason to Fight" or "Hold on to the Memories". Both fantastic songs.

Its definitely relatable but the man Draimen said himself being "disturbed" is just being different in society that doesn't accept you and catching the sickness is to become "Disturbed" hence the band name. The "Abuse" section of this song is about "mother" being society and how it abuses us

@@petermatthew6124 Thank you! Unfortunately, I know a lot of people who got REALLY turned off to the song because of that last spoken word bit. I don't blame them, it's a bit jarring if you aren't prepared or used to lyrics like that. It's also really hard to explain nuance and metaphor to someone who's caught up and focused on the extreme profanity and dark subject matter, which again, I can understand. So many people couldn't really understand why I liked music that seemed so "disgusting and crass" on the surface like this song (which was REALLY tame given my playlists at the time). Guess they just weren't down with the sickness enough lol

But thats not true David has said numerous times his mother was very loving and caring, and that correct me if im wrong mommy was a reference to government

This song isn't about his mother or any other mother it is about society, the culture or the powers looking down on the people. The rant is the push back.

Idk if you guys like watching movies, but this song was also a part of the soundtrack for Queen of the Damned, starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townshend. People complained about the movie not being like the book, but it still became a cult classic. Hope you check it out. This song is to the extreme of what someone might feel inside once they've reached the breaking point of getting abused. The rage takes over, and now you're abusive upbringing made a monster out of you, who just snaps.

This is the first Disturbed song I heard on the radio (not explicit) and loved it! They are hard rock. Now you have to see the other side. The Sound of Silence, but you have to watch or listen to the original from Simon & Garfunkel. Watch the music video and not just the words. I’m almost 60 and Disturbed’s version brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Enjoy!

I’m late… but YASS! You’ve got to do more Disturbed! Their sound and content is amazing! Even though I love their whole discography…the first few albums are a must…can’t go wrong with anything from those. I think I listened to Ten Thousand Fists over and over for months, I couldn’t get enough. Believe and The Sickness are sooo good as well. Draiman is just so talented and his lyrics are powerful.

Disturbed was the opening act for Korn back in Oct 2002 in Tampa, FL when I was 14. They were so much better live than Korn. I was originally there for Korn. Korn was 90 minutes late too so that put me in a bad mood lol.

" Truth goes to darkness to die". When we are afraid to talk hard about hard things we stop talking all together. "Hate limps into light to die". In order for darkness to die we must first put a name to it. If we pussyfoot around truth, we find ourselves in places like where we are now; when differences of opinion become an assault on our feelings, words become war. That's all this old man has to say about that.

So, my own mother asked to borrow my pickup truck for some errand and I said sure, and this CD was in the CD player already and it was set to the song before this, so on the way home she heard this song, and it was not the clean version. She hands me back the keys and immediately says to me, "Do you ever have dark thoughts?" LOL! I didn't even think of what was in the CD player!
