Atsuhime was the wife of the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. She was a remarkable woman who possessed both beauty and intelligence and had a far-reaching vision. At the age of 22, she married the shogun in this turbulent period, but became a widow at 23.
Despite her youth and widowhood, Atsuhime used her political wisdom and vision to save Japan from the brink of war and facilitated a peaceful transfer of power, bringing together the cabinet and the Ooku to jointly face the crisis facing the Tokugawa family.

Thank you so much for making this video about the real Atsuhime. I remember watching the series, Atsuhime on TV when I was a quite young. Even though, I knew the show was historical fiction, I really loved the way they showed the culture of the samurai and later of the imperial family and nobles of Kyoto. I love the clothing and etiquette they portrayed in the show. Thank you so much again.

2:23-2:24. I guess they left that one out in the actual tv show which was the part on slurred speed and fidgeting because all that was shown was Lesada was speaking Japanese while Townsend Harris spoke English. Lesada demonstrated he heard everything Townsend Harris said in English but only responded in Japanese. Then after that, it shows Lesada telling Princess Atsu that he was being a funny emperor at that meeting. So I will take it that the story you told may not of matched to the tv show which meant the tv version is fiction while what you say is a true story. I guess there is a difference between a real historical documents and fictional historical tv show. So in a tv show, that would mean Townsend Harris only recorded that Emperor Lesada does not speak English while in the real historical stories will state that Townsend Harris recorded Lesada having slurred speech and fidgeting during that meeting.
