I don’t think you need to apologize for doing what needs to be done to get you veg garden established. Your keeping the good stuff and turning it under to improve the soil. Your not adding a lot of artificial amendments. If there are nay sayers out here that try to shame you, turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to them and do what’s right for you. Enjoy your visit with your family and friends. 👌

"I've got to get some gloves..." And how about some safety glasses, huh? John, I've said it before! I know they are a pain in the bum but your sight is sooo important. Please wear them when you are chipping away at hard surfaces. Happy to see you were wearing them while working on the step. What is the plan for the layout of the bathroom? If you don't want a bidet the toilet go there thus allowing for a larger shower on the back wall. Safe travels, Tara and boys! S.

Good morning Newby family, Bon Voyage Tara, Crusoe and Sawyer and Godspeed. John is not alone he has all of us to cheer him and encourage him. Like another friend mentioned here, the earth should be replenished with compost and manure and be overturned. The planting of the crops should be rotated, so that each crop will take only the minerals it needs. Glad you have a good spring in Portugal all is blooming. Our regards to your family in Zimbabwe Tara, hope to see you there soon with your precious little boys. Some heavy duty work projects going on! So impressed by the amount of compost you were able to make and spread on the garden area. Glad John may have a plumber to help. Such fine neighbors! I hope the weather clears up for you soon. Meanwhile the rain will make your flowers come to life! I like that John balances the deconstruction/reconstruction work with his love of lawn and flowers! Tara, it is absolutely fine to continue traditional farming. You have to toddler’s, houses too build, a lot of land clearing to do. Ecological no dig is good as a future plan. Great work on the step and tiles John. Nice too see you and Joao alternate on the demolition. ❤

Those bathroom fittings should have been carefully removed and sold on ebay or similar, would have helped pay for the new one. They may have been exactly what someone was looking for. That Tiler did a better job than the one that tiled my bathroom, I'm forever sticking them back on.

I must admit John that I was giggling throughout the bathroom breakdown. I absolutely love doing demo work.When I've done it I have found it so satisfying and fascinating to see the changes happen so quickly. And the music for the demo is perfect. Tara the garden is going to be fantastic. Each year you will get closer to no dig and in the meantime you will have great produce. Hard work but great rewards. I'm eager to see Zimbabwe clips. The boys share such a tight bond with each other already. So sweet. And as always your neighbors are wonderful! Full steam ahead😊❣💫☀

Your step reminds me of our poor builder and the way they were in the 60s. A lot of ...... taking down a wall. The tiles I did in our bathroom were in concrete . We'll done to you John. Tara you will get there, your doing a great job. Enjoy Your visit home and safe journeys

I don’t know if these are available in Portugal but in our last house (UK) when we renovated our bathroom we didn’t use tiles at all, we used shower panels which are much easier, quicker and cheaper and there’s lots of designs to chose from. Look them up. Good luck John and have a lovely trip, Tara and the boys.

From the opening magical mist and Sawyers delighted laughter to the accompanying lovely music, this was a special episode. Glad that Tara and the children are away in the sunshine for two weeks so that John can get on and get things moving. Joao, is such a special young man as is his family - how wonderful to have moved next to a whole family of treasures! I would just ask you John, to be more aware of your need for protecting your eyes,. They are a precious and important organ that cannot be replaced when badly damaged. Also, may I offer some advice - although unsolicited- please take it with the caring concern with which it is given, please take regular breaks while Tara is away, and eat well. It is too easy to burn out, and takes a long time to heal and repair after. Thank you.

This is such a helpful perspective to know the farm this way and just by keeping chemicals off the ground and planting things all the time with soil never bare seems to be enough to keep healthy soil- this has freed me up to a bigger project I want to take on for a larger garden:)

Awe Tara and the boys in South-Africa! Then you very far but still closer to us😅. Hope you enjoy your visit at your parents and family in Zim. Nice work John. Love it when you are at work because things change into great work, especially when you doing wood work. Sara it's good to turn around the ground sometimes before planting. I also grow up on a farm and my dad and brothers where big farmers. My dad always believed that afterwards you need to put a lot of compost and horse minure to made the ground ritch and healthy. Exactly my father did the same every spring he replenished the earth with compost and manure and changed the crops placement for better rotation with what he planted. 🌅🌄💐

The wisteria tree looks so gorgeous right now. Do you know if you will be able to save it when you knock down the old house? I couldn’t really tell how close it is to the side of the house. You can tile right on top of the existing tile you don’t need to board it first. You can also get a tile chisel for the sds drill it has a 4” edge blade to it so removes a decent amount of tile in each pass.

Cutting and chipping away into the unknown is a little scary, but adventuresome too. Hoping all the work proves to lead to an excellent outcome. I think we take Plumbers for granted here in the States. My Dad, nephew and son-in-law are all plumbers. I sure hope you find one quicker than you could imagine. Sad Tara and boys are away, but can’t wait to see their adventures too. Brave Tara!!!! Safe and Happy travels!!!

Hi John. Please check out the latest video of Van wives to see what happens when you do DIY and not wear PPE. Chemical burn in her eye from cement entering her eye as she was not wearing eye protection. I was concerned for you when you were smashing up the bathroom with a hammer and pieces porcelain were flying through the air which could have easily gone into your eyes. Please be aware that your boys watch your actions (when they are around) and it would be a good guide to teach them how to be safe when working. Good luck with the renovations.

By turning the soil Tara which is wonderful and all those compost and weeds, grass etc etc that you are turning back into the ground is such nutrients to the soil, so do not feel bad about it. Jao is such a help as is his dad Mario and Senior Augustino (not sure how you spell his name) what lovely people. Tara, Crusoe and Sawyer enjoy your holiday and stay safe.
