I grew up in the 1970’s. Songs were magical , and there was an innocence and excitement for the future. I feel so sad for the kids in these present times and generations who will never experience that pure joy
I feel sorry for today's generation who see politely discontent being prosecuted to the fullest. In my day this was considered as JOB SCARED OLD GUYS DOING WHAT THEY FELT THEY HAD TOO. ALSO SEEN BY THE YOUNGER GENER A TION AS WHAT THEY FELT THEY HAD TO DO. Remember Kent State. Marches in DC all over the nation. Today this sort of discourse is considered a felony.
I was 16 in 1976. What a magical time. The music coming out of the radio was a great soundtrack to be young to. Didn’t realize how lucky I was to live in such an innocent time when the future looked so bright.
I saw them in a small club in Atlanta in 1976 called Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom. It was a Wednesday night, $5.00 in enter and penny beers. One night I will never forget!
It's undoubtedly a good one. I also like, 'Well, I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer...the future's uncertain and the end is always near" - Jim Morrison Granted, a different 'vibe'.
I assume everybody watching the video was familiar with the song, so what didn't they like - the arrangement, the performance, the camera work?? Unless they had their heart set on watching H&O lip sync to the album track I don't know what is the problem. Great work by all involved.
I can hardly listen to this without crying for my sister who died far too young at 37 . We both loved Daryl Hall and Oates and sat at the front row in all of their concerts so .. this song means a lot to me.
Music can release any and all emotions in us. I LOVE music. I also hate it. This might be my favorite song of theirs, but I get weird listening to it. The words are almost verbatim what I think about my son's passing. So sorry about your sister.... I'm going to stay hopeful that one day me and you can listen to this song without tears of sadness...just smiles.
These were days when the music wasnt only about the "lead singer". We had bands. The music had heart and soul, and brought amazing energy. Love of the times.
Nov 2023 , I'm still listening to the music from the 60s 70s and 80s... Music that will always be heard... Especially in grocery store aisles as you shop!! Aging those who are still signing them....
My folks grew up listening to Daryl Hall and John Oates. Then once I came around, they played their music throughout the day and I became hooked. Thanks mom and dad! 👍🏼
OMG look how young they are....Daryl Hall, bless him is in his 70's..as we are...still singing this in 2023 - in his show LIVE FROM DARYL'S HOUSE. 'everybody's high on consolation'...what a great, aching lyric...
This takes me back to a time I didn't have a care in the world. Just wanted to ride my bike, play baseball, hang out with my friends and listen to the radio.
Me and many other kids from my neighborhood spent so much time outdoors. My group of friends (we didn't all know eachother real well, but it didn't matter....we needed more kids to play certain sports, unlike tennis or hitting golfballs on an open field) got together to play baseball during summer break. I played several outdoor sports even when summer break was over. Almost everyone needed bikes since it was normal to for kids to ride bikes everywhere. Staying inside the house during the summer break was not even thought of an option if it wasn't raining! Me and my closest friend always figured out plenty of different things to do....all accomplished without spending hardly any money despite all the hours of enjoyment each week.
I was seven years old when this song was released, my father, grandfather and two uncles were playing this while sipping on beer, I was the only one who thought that this was a black group and I said it loud to them, they all laughed and said "no, everyone has soul music within them, and regardless of color always keep an open mind." To date, hall and oates are one of my favorite groups of all time, rest in peace Willie, James, Dale and Adrian (my father, grandfather and two uncles).
In 1978 I left a small town in Montana, and went to San Francisco, and started nursing school. Talk about culture Shock!! This song was very popular. Great memories, We had a BLAST!!
It ranks at the top of my list. I'm 61. This song came in the 70s. SHE'S GONE. So is this era if music. But I'm hearing it today. I listen. I t takes me back and i love this song and the time in my life I'll always remember. Wish i could go back
For roughly a decade between the late 70's and the mid 80's, no one and I mean no one could hold a candle to these guys, easily one of the best duo's of all time
My 33 year old daughter loved Hall and Oates and when she passed away on February 10, 2014, this is the first song we played as we gathered around her.
This song is the most pure proof of the skill of these two artists that I can't stop listening to after more than 30 years . The combination of both voices is just pure perfection. I love John's voice particularly in this song. One of my favourite Hall and Oates tracks
My dentist knows I love oldies. He asked me once, “What is your favorite hall and Oates song?” W/0 skipping a beat I said,”man eater because I am one!” Who would dream they would tour shortly after that? Went to see them, they sang everything.
As a musician I love playing Hall and Oates songs. Beautiful melodies and chords. The modulation at the end is like a mountain of whip cream. Watch the drummer grab his symbols for the hard stop. Timeless
so lucky to be given a true talent...music...in any way....keep going....never stop......im eccletic....if i like i like....all music end of day.......u take care and keep going......never stop
I. AM AND ALWAYS WILL!! My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Hall and Oates song. Darryl's voice is so...mmm...perfect....wonderful...just...mmmm...yeah, it's like that. So so so good!! And the lyrics! And the harmony! and the instrumentation! The arrangement! It's just wonderful! And, if you look up this song "live at Daryl's House" with Rob Thomas (on youtube), it's 99.9% as good as the original.
I was born on the day this song was released and my parents told me I danced out of the womb and laughed and moved to this song my whole first year of being on this Earth. Years later I am now a Dancer and Singer.
Back when music didn't need anything but talented musicians and great songs by equally great writers. No computer gimmicks, fake stuff or anything else. Just timeless music that will far outlast anything today.
I was 16yrs old.. and whilst the average teen girl was madly in love with the phone.. my heart belonged to the radio!! Now I'm 63.. and still in love!.. music is life. Thanks Hall & Oats ❤❤
His voice was amazing...I wish they had stopped before the 80s though! "Private Eyes" and "Your Kiss is on my List" ruined it for me. But "She's Gone" and "Sarah Smile" make it all good
John is the primary songwriter for this song. Daryl said that, he gives John credit as the songwriter for "Shes Gone" and many other of their hit songs.
I love being born in a zero year! 1960 here. My ex father in law was 1930. I m so prejudiced about this i pity the fools born otherwise. Thats alot of people. I lose!
What can I say about this song?! I was in the Marine Corps when this song was on the radio....and I was captivated. It was the days of disco, but these guys were different! In the late 70's and early 80's, these guys had the Maidas Touch. EVERYTHING they touched turned to GOLD! Can't forget it!
Happy 73rd Birthday John William Oates April 7, 1948. NYC born.. He recorded his first single at the tender age of 18. Co captain of the wrestling team in high school. Wrestled in college too. Not a typical musicians life story. Many more John William..
I grew up in zip 19454. Use to see Daryl and John at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr in the early 70's You're right...Not Typical and after all this time....They still are really special!
@@tallyho2249 A very Happy 75th Birthday Daryl Franklin Hohl. Born in Pottstown, but is a Philly boy at heart.. Words can't express the contribution you have made in rock/pop music. many, many more Mr. Hohl..

@@duelingmurphys7868 I went to Lehigh. Saw them several times . And I went on to have a long career as being a flight attendant for 2 majors. Who knew???
Incredible still . I was blessed to grow up in the 70 's and 80's . They used to write and perform actual music back then . It had actual meaning. When you were done listening it touched your soul . It helped you hang on . There was no sampling . There was no aggrandizement of thuggery and violence. Truly a shame what music had become. No heart . It's empty . Just because you can hit 15 notes doesn't make it great . They still play our music , and will for decades. Love to my brothers and sisters.
Ya know, I also grew up in the 70's and 80's. My all-time favorite bands are Rush, Styx, and 38 Special. That does not mean I agree with your assessment of today's music. If you actually listen, I mean really listen to a lot of the music you feel is glorifying "thuggery", I think you'll discover that a whole lot of it is warning the listener to avoid that life at all costs. I also believe that every era has some incredible artists. From Prince, Kanye West (as much as I hate that guy I cannot deny that he is a musical genius) to the Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran. If you don't realize that music still evolves just like it did back in our day and always will, then man, you haven't really opened up your soul and you're missing out.
@@msexton1968 Okay the "thuggery" rap litterly goes into the heart and soul, what you consume it was you bring into the heart and soul. The singer doesn't warn the listener to avoid that. That's why kids think it's cool that their pants are halfway down their but and act all tough and hard. This singing of "thuggery" is crap culture okay. There's people who turned stupid. This music is 100x better than the "thuggery." Don't try to counter or I slip then hit you back with my counter, and the punch ain't going to be a good one.
im listening, and they were great. im a fan and they did some great songs..love this stuff. appart from the memories, these songs have real talent in the making. what lets them down is the reproduction between those days and now, but there is nothing we can do about that!!
@@jaolin6042 `Daryl gives credit to John Oates as the songwriter on this one. I heard him say it before. I think Oates had the idea after he got kiinda stood up on a date by a girl he just recently met. lol, He wrote most of this one. One of their first few hits along with Sara Smile followed by many, many more they had.
One of the best songs ever written about a lost love and the beauty and purity of the music and their voices is just magic. Sorry folks but these are the facts
I was 10 years old at the time this video was made. I enjoy their voices together, and separate. They are timeless, I agree, & I don’t understand why in the world would someone give this a thumbs down.
A true classic that remains timeless. All you have to do is hear the first few bars of music 🎶 and then Daryl and John start making their magic. Forever young! 😎 💘
Yes, before the small hats brought us vulgar rap. They also brought hardcore porn on every child's cellphone, legal and encouraged in Palestine and in the U.S. and illegal of course in Israel.
This takes me back to my early teens, when the world was a far better place to be. What a brillant song performed by great musicians! This song will never get old, unlike me 🤫😉😎
These two are definitely among if not the best duo ever in my opinion. From the first time I heard their music in 84/85 till now. They still sound amazing to this day.Their songs always make my day!!!
Sabrina Thomas Lol it's ok you probably not in your 50's or 60's but even so great music can be appreciated from any age.I got my 5 year old godson into music like this.
I love everything about this song, but especially the way it builds up from a dawning realization into a full throated lament at the loss. Never gets old.
Remembering how great these guys were.Chilling lyrics.❤Thanks for sharing a step back in the past. God Bless those who are solo.Nothing lasts for ever.🥰
Daryl Hall had the better voice but John Oates was more eye candy for the ladies --- that mustache and chiseled physique definitely got the attention of the women
If there's a been a better duo than these guys I'd like to know who they are because listening to them perform superb songs like this live is really magic.
There's such great two-part harmony between Hall & Oates, I'm surprised that they didn't use it so much on their later hits. This remains their best song. I believe it actually charted twice for them.
Have always loved this song, but seeing it performed live takes it to the next level!! It’s mesmerizing to watch them go back and forth with the vocals! They make it look effortless! 🎸 Rock on!!
