This iconic song from Joy Division is way ahead of its time, with moody vocals, a bass guitar playing a high melody alongside a droning open D, a guitar holding down the rhythm, mechanized drums, and haunting lyrics inspired by a woman having a seizure.
It has been interpreted a number of different ways, including by the band itself, and for the Gothik Serpent version I made it closer to the fast, aggressive rendition from the excellent movie Control. Like many older songs I cover, I wanted to bring it to the 21st century by maximizing the dynamic contrast between the verse and chorus sections, and playing around with how the bass, guitar, and drums, despite largely playing the same thing throughout, can vary up their sound.
