Mike and Melissa, I'm relatively new to the channel, but I really appreciate how responsible you guys truly are with the way you go about maintaining your acreage and the way you go about harvesting trees. You seem to always put a priority on fallen trees and dangerous trees to your homestead or trails to ensure no one gets hurt and you clean up after storms and I know I've seen your son even helping to plant new pines and such. I commend you all for making nature a priority and being responsible as you all are! I enjoy the channel and admire how hard working you all are and your dedication to getting things done, much respect, all of the best to the Morgan's and God Bless! Brian

Hi Morgans. Ive processed alot of firewood. Had some very close calls with flying pieces. It's random and unpredictable. I have mandated that anyone in the area of the splitter work with a chainsaw helmet on face shield down. At least you can prevent a head/face blow with that. Blessings to you wonderful American family!!!

I have a property here in Iwate Japan, was clear cut about 40 years ago. Thick forest now, cant even walk into it, maples and cherry are the most common trees. People don't understand that there's a natural seed bank with years if not decades built up waiting for the right conditions. Its not that way with every forest of course but with some there's simply no need to plant anything.

I agree with you about planting trees. I have taken down numerous trees and haven't planted one single tree. Saplings crop up on their own.

Tree growth in northwest Florida is just like there, cut a big one down and see a bunch of little trees within a few years. The scrub oaks here will take over if you don't cut them every year. The oak trees here produce a enormous amount of acorns!! Thankful Ed is doing good!! Thanks for the video!!

Here across the pond, local to me, we have just lost in a summer storm an English oak that dates roughly to the Declaration of Independence, it was part of a decorative carriage drive around 1/2 mile long, only 3 of the original trees now remain

Plant some winter rye (not rye grass) in that clearing. You will have deer in that through December and its a great cover crop to preserve your soil. Stuff grows anywhere and deer love it. Over seed it every 3 weeks with about 50 lb and you will be set for some backstraps 😋

Topic. Trees. I live about 10 miles from you, next to BC airport. We moved into the area in 1975. When traveling through Butler and northern counties, I noticed a lot of forest land with no trees more than 40 years old, a lot of farms with no buildings less than 40 years old and, often, little or no farm equipment less than 40 years old. One day, in the early 1980’s, I stopped in a feed store in Butler County. I got talking to the proprietor, who was in his 70’s. He said that at one time he and his brothers had five grain elevators in Butler County. I asked what happened. He said that after WWII, when farmers went to tractors instead of horses, farmers could still produce more Wheat per acre than they could in Kansas, but farmers in Kansas could grow more Wheat per hour in the flat lands of Kansas than they could in the rolling lands of Pa. The lower price for wheat made it unprofitable to grow wheat in Pa and much farmland went back to woodland. I believe Pa has about 30% less farmland than it did 100 years ago

About every five years the oaks overproduce the acorns to ensure that they make trees and not just get eaten by animals. I know Minnesota is having that type of year in 2023 so maybe Pennsylvania as well. Nice idea to expand the area and diversify your property.

I was thinking the same thing about the cage before you said it. Don't want to fix one issue and create another. Heavy flaps might work but even then, you have to make sure you don't just move the safety issue to another area.

Someone has already said it and it’s true. If you think they need a cage over the splitter then you’ve never split wood before. Mike and Melissa do an outstanding job there and they do know what they’re doing. You guys have got it looking great there. A lot of people don’t realize when you then trees out, you are encouraging new growth and healthier trees. We do appreciate what you guys do. Great video. I believe you are right. What I suggest is having a chain curtain that you can look through and deflects the energy of nasty aimed logs. One could reach through and even part way but that should act like the chain on the back of a brush hog from throwing rocks. Water buffalo, Rino, Elk, Deer, Bear. Just a few little critters. 🙂🤠
