Me and my girlfriend ran the 100k in 21:15hrs, having only done a few months of running in our lives and never anything longer than 15 miles. We only got to the start line because of this channel, and made it to the finish because of this channel. Congrats to jen for her stellar time and both of your hard work!

Any advice? I am runninng a 100k in a month. I've been trainning unconsistently for 5 months. I do have 2 months where I ran close to 150 kms. Longest run was 33 km, with 9 km the next day. The race has 7000 ft of total elevation gain and loss. What are things you wished you knew? Any other advice is very much appreciated. Thanks!

@@israelvlbs I think all three of these thames path videos do a good job at highlighting the reality of the distance. 100k isn’t like doing 10k, ten times. I don’t know a lot about running, but I did learn a lot about ultras when we did it: - Nutrition and hydration are the most important things to get right - You’ll feel great for 5,10,15,20 miles, be conservative, when it starts to fall apart it falls apart very quickly. Don’t speed up. - You must be ready, and willing, to meet suffering head on. You will reach stages where you know you can’t go on, and somehow you must. It’s both a glorious and terrible thing to experience - Finishing probably means not running every km, and that’s okay. - Small injuries and niggle become big problems in long distances. Avoid blisters, hotspots, pressure points, chafing like your life depends on it. - If you have access to bag drops at x distance, use them. We did not use our 50km bag drop and later regretted carrying too much during the day and not having enough clothes at night. - Write a race plan for your target time, write a race place for a time 5 hours slower than that. Take some comfort in that it sounds like you are in better form than we were at the start line. We said to each other right at the beginning, 100k no matter what. That is the mindset I think you have to have. And be careful, finish or not, running ultra once quickly turns into an obsession 😉

Mark, you are a great inspiration but I have bad news. Jen is now my favorite Lewis RU-vidr. I watched the video without knowing the result and actually teared up when I realized she was going to finish. I too struggle with quitting and a lack of motivation sometimes. But if she can, so can I. And you're an awesome husband, doubling back to get her through the hard part. WooHoo from me to you two.

I’ve enjoyed your channel for a while, but this is the first time I’ve felt so moved as to comment. As a small woman, it really viscerally hit me when (a) she got yelled at by the horrible teens and (b) when she was running without her phone and watch, alone in the dark. I’ve have been terrified. I’d have been bawling my face off. Hats off to Jen for her mental fortitude and having the strength to keep going!!! You’re an inspiration, Jen! ❤

Jen Rocks!!! You were right when you said you’re 2 different types of runner. That’s a big part of why she succeeded-all of those other events that distracted her were great cross training and teaching her what she’s capable of. She was mentally focused on her goal and believed she could achieve it. I did my first long distance bike of 112 miles years ago. Only trained 37 miles on my longest ride because I Had only acquired my road bike a few weeks before the race. Threw my bike in the dirt at mile 55 and thought about quitting. Ate my emergency snickers bar and knew I’d finish no matter what. Finished in the dark 2 hours after they took down the finish line. Stabbing pains in my legs the next day but didn’t dampen that sense of accomplishment. Totally worth it!

I finished this race inside 12 hours a couple of years back. No terrible heat, no running in the dark, and I went into it feeling fairly well prepared (sub-3hr marathon previously, etc). I was still a mess by the finish line. I couldn’t eat or drink for much of it (nausea), and I could barely walk at the end. I had to call someone at 80k to have a good cry down the phone. It doesn’t matter how well trained or fast you think you are. Ultra distances are so much about mental fortitude, which you both clearly have bags off. Kudos to her for giving it a go, and for getting it done 👏

Hey mark, love the channel. I have just completed my first race / event in 5yrs after shedding 45kg and counting. I had stopped events like ironman, tri and marathon a few years ago and up until Feb 2023 had written off any notion of fitness. I had accepted the hole I had dug. Then something changed - I felt I deserved more. And I went for a run and started to look for inspiration. I take a lot of motivation from your channel. Hope to thank you in person one day - but until then keep doing what you’re doing. It’s changing peoples lives :)

Jen did a fantastic job of managing the heat. She stayed hydrated, stayed electrolyted (if that's not a real word, it is now) and found bits of shade whenever possible. Well done, Jen! I don't do stupid long runs, I do stupid long bicycle rides. As a big dude (much closer to Mark's "before" photo than his "after" photos) heat is my kryptonite. I DNF'd a big ride last year in a freak heat wave. I set a PR for the first 300K (under 13 hours over hilly terrain, mostly at night), then the heat hit and the wheels fell off. It took more than 3 hours to ride the final 50K over relatively gentle terrain. I had nothing in the tank. I ended up with full-on heat stroke -- shivering and chills (despite the oppressive heat and humidity), dizzy, slurring my words, unable to walk straight, no appetite. It was debilitating and super scary. I was a living (barely) example of every symptom Mark looked for in Jen during her run. Again, well done, Jen. You're a certified bad-ass.

Endurance events are 90% mental, this includes execution. If Mark didn't have the experience he did over his previous events...this video would not have ended the way it did. I've been following your channel for years and this video inspired me to sign up to give this very Ultra a go later this year, having only done a half marathon 10 years ago as any distance before. Been training since January and I've discovered a new found love for running. Just about to set off for a 17 mile run 👍. Thanks for the great content.
