The disabled mom with the dog- There's definitely two sides to that story. My fiance's parents wouldn't be allowed in my home because of how they treated him growing up- which I won't explain for reasons. But if he explained to others that I didn't want his parents in my house, he likely wouldn't divulge the details because he wouldn't feel like it's anyone's business. He would feel like 'If she doesn't want them around, that's between me and her'. And most people would fill in the gap with the fantasy that the parents are always innocent. I wouldn't be able to explain without invading his privacy, so I would stick with the ol' 'You don't know me and IDGAF what you think'. After all, I don't have to worry when the truth is on my side.

That woman who called off the wedding dodged a huge bullet. It’s remarkable how well an abusive partner can convince a person that THEY are the f*caked up one. I was an independent, strong woman, widowed with 2 kids when I found myself falling in love with a guy who seemed amazing at first; over the course of four years he slowly destroyed my life. Eleven days before we were supposed to be getting married, he was apparently secretly smoking crack, and he ended up snapping. There was a 36 hour kidnapping and attempted murder situation that I barely escaped. I was totally shocked by the way this man behaved during those hours and it destroyed my belief in my own ability to judge character. ❤ Take your time getting to know people, and listen to your gut. See those red flags, and discuss them with someone who loves you. Someone you trust. And never, EVER allow anyone to separate you from others. That’s a universal red flag, because your friends and family are going to tell you that you are being mistreated. Listen to them!❤

I have 2 Rottweilers atm (5 in my lifetime) and I can understand the spouse concern. Untrained rotties can cause harm to the owners or others. They are a sweet breed but they tend to be dominant with their space and temperamental. They can also playfully jump you and hurt you and lets not talk if they are possessive with their food, kids can go there with the dog and not know their nono's and get hurt in some way or another. Also, they are a big breed, their poop is enormous, they eat and pee a lot will she will need to also be responsible of the dog? he works part time and she works fulltime and still takes care of her kids. Having a rottie is a huge responsibility and one of those responsibilities is having them trained. smh

I think people really underestimate how powerful a traumatic childhood experience with a dog can be for someone. Clearly, it's not the MIL moving in that's the problem, it's the dog, and MIL is refusing a free place to live because she's insisting that the dog has to be allowed to come, too.

I'm not a rich kid, in fact we were pretty poor. I always wanted a horse. My mom (who is toxic on other levels than just this story) told me I could get one only if it was free and I got a job to afford the costs of boarding. I started working at 12 (seriously, that's how much I wanted it, I started working at local farms) and by the time I was 16, was working 2 jobs (and still maintaining all A's at school) and making quite a bit for a kid my age. I even gave my mom money to help her with bills, and still had enough left over. Well, a neighbor moved, leaving all their animals, it was pretty shady. One of the animals left was their Arabian gelding. The ASPCA, when called in, offered it first to the neighbors for free (there were several horse farms around us), so one I worked at told me about it, and that they'd let me board for pretty cheap. Like it was a dream come true. My mom said the same as this guy's dad, that I couldn't have really taken her seriously, and that life isn't fair. She refused to allow me to work for them anymore and called them personally to tell them no, as my parent and guardian I was not allowed to accept the horse. Point I'm making, doesn't matter if your rich or poor, it's a horrible thing to do to a kid. His dad just wanted some control and bragging rights about his piano prodigy, mine just liked, so far as I see it, that I had money to give to her. It's an asshole thing to do. And hard to trust after that.

@rigby.walabee

I dont think the wife was the AH kn the MIL/dog moving in story, even before the edit. This is something that, I think, shows off the differences between how men and women are raised. OPs wife would, most likely, have been the one to take care of/train the dog and helping the MIL, on top of caring for the kids and doing the housework and the emotional labor and planning and all the things that go into a relationship that women are conditioned to do for their partners and sons, so men don't typically think about all the stuff that they don't see or learn about that goes into maintaining a house or relationship. It's perfectly reasonable to say no, I can't add two more living things to that list of labor. Additionally, even if she didn't have a fear of dogs, an untrained two year lld rottweiler who has never been around small kids will be dangerous because it doesn't know how to play gently and be social with children (not intentional or malicious, mind you). She's completely right in all of her reasons for saying no, and said if MIL finds an alternative olace for the dog, which can be temporary, she can stay. MIL didn't want to board ber dog while she figured out her housing, which is her right, but that doesn't mean OPs wife is an AH for saying no.
@yourancientancestor

Exactlyyyy I might have a biased viewpoint but to me he just wants to be mommy's boy and make excuses for his full grown adult mother who can't even maintain housing clearly. While I agree with you, I think you’re definitely going off the deep end a bit with all that emotional labor, saying she’ll have to train the dog, maintaining a relationship, etc. But overall, the wife doesn’t have to do anything she doesn’t want to do, and she has very good points with the kids, the dog, and her trauma.

I’m so late to this but yes! Or, they could find someone to temporarily take care of the dog, a foster family or a friend… something! Especially if the dog is untrained, I absolutely 100% understand why OP’s wife in that post wouldn’t compromise on the dog coming with the MIL, and double-especially since they have small kids in the house. Rottweilers can be TERRIFYING and do a LOT of awful damage even if they are well-trained! My best friend growing up was attacked by her own Rottie that she raised from a puppy (they grew up together) when her dog had puppies. She called me one day to come over to help her give the puppies a bath, but my Dad said no since her parents weren’t home and he had a bad feeling. I still remember being SO mad at him, but I’m incredibly grateful he did say no because my best friend wound up in the ICU with deep gashes all over her body for over a month after her dog attacked her. It was incredibly scary for a time and she almost didn’t make it. She still has scars all over her body nearly 30 years later. All that to say: I completely understand why OP’s wife put her foot down on the dog coming with MIL to stay in her house, and she’s definitely NTA in this story. MIL should figure something else out to do with the dog for the time being if she has no other options for housing, and the husband/OP of that post should do some research regarding Rottweiler attacks and look at some pictures of what just one bite could do to his small children.

Somebody with a chronic pain condition and have an animal lover or animals but especially dogs and cats. There’s two things. The first one is that I can absolutely see the valid points from both Jalen and Ellie, so I can definitely understand what you mean however, dogs in particular, but cats as well are very therapeutic animals. They used as therapy for a lot of people with chronic pain conditions as these conditions can be socially limiting, they can affect your mental health, quite seriously, and Direct for a proven science that if you have a dog or a cat or any animal that you can/really that is domesticated are you just seems to be in the home does actual evidence that proves that be able to sit with say a dog on your lap for next year, depending on the breed that stroking its fur releases, the phone feel good hormone which also acts as a kind of pain reliever, so there are a lot of people that have chronic pain conditions that used to have therapy animals as they can contribute so much for your life. They can sometimes also improve your condition in the sense that if this is OP’s mum. Obviously OP is married with kids so she’s going to be a slightly older lady having an animal with you basically sometimes gives you a reason to keep going when things might be getting on top of you in regards to your condition because you’re always aware of the animal needing your care and attention in order to survive. (obviously I’m talking about domesticated animals and in no way shape or form and no animal deserves to be abandoned, so any rehoming of a pet must be done properly, so that they are safe and well looked after) So that being said, I can completely understand why the mother doesn’t want to give up the dog, as it may actually be a huge beneficial therapeutic tool to help her even potentially around the house, depending on the training that the dogs had obviously if any as Opie didn’t make it clear. Ha ha, as Ellie said she’s not an animal person know what you typically want an animal dog or not in the house. The one thing I would say is the OP didn’t actually make it clear as to whether or not what he was suggesting was that she moving permanently. Oh, what’s the weather not she moving temporarily . If it’s temporarily then I don’t really see why some sort of accommodation couldn’t be made to help temporarily, and so she is able to get back on her feet or at least offered even if this means some minor concessions on both parties, i.e. and the dog isn’t left alone in a room with the children, and that’s only if it have a history like nothing in rupees story, suggested that the dog was problematic at all. Or they could come to some of the sort of compromise where you know she takes the dog out and the dog it’s her responsibility as it would be if she was living at home or around and that the dog is to stay with her at all times if you get what I mean, but again like I said, I do see both sides to this, and if you’re not a cat or a dog person then having somebody to stay at

Even if she wasn't bitten by the dog in the mil moving into the house story. The emotional PTSD of being chased by these dogs as a kid can cause deep trauma. I understand her not wanting to have the dog in that situation especially if they have small kids. The fear is very valid and she's not an AH, and the husband is the AH for not understanding that it is valid. I have a deep seated fear of driving, no one around me understands why because I've never been in an accident but I've known so many that have and it has caused me to fear it. It is valid and she is valid for those fears.

With the rottweiler story, I was bitten by a territorial dog JUST 4 days ago. They have a beware of dog sign on their fence, but the fence barely comes up to my thigh, and I'm 5'3". In my city you need a taller fence for any animal that has a history of aggression. Unfortunately this is not the first time their dog has bitten people, and I worry since Jr high and high school students walk past the sidewalk (the path is just rocks) in front of the house every day, and at the height I was bitten at on my arm, possibly young children could be bitten on the face, neck, or chest. Being bitten at a young age can create lasting and permanent fears for life sadly, which can become PTSD. As an adult I can rationalize the thought of a territorial dog, but a child would possibly just see a potential threat that is trying to harm them. Even if a child was not bit, and the dog only showed aggression, lunging, snarling, snapping ect., It can create a traumatizing scenario and give lasting impressions, which also can become PTSD. From this perspective I can understand both sides, but if someone has PTSD, you have to be respectful of their traumas as they can easily slip back into an episode. Due to unfortunate childhood circumstances I have cPTSD. If they have a backyard the dog could stay in that MAY be a possibility, but PTSD is no joke.

Ok this is making me mad. That is not how chicken nuggets are made. They are made from grinding up the leftover bits of chicken like bones and skin that are left over from using all the normal parts of chicken. Baby chicks do not have enough meat to make any real food with and grow very quickly so it would be dumb to use them like that.

The most aggressive dog I’ve ever met was a rottie- broke through a window to chase kids getting off the bus. The owner was lucky and the dog didn’t get them before they got in the house, but he had to get bulletproof front glass windows to keep him from breaking through to get the kids. He had to replace the glass several times before getting the bulletproof glass because he would break it to chase vehicles and bite their tires as they rode down the street. You had to be super careful of any movements you made around him when you were in his house, or he would bite you. Just because you haven’t met any, doesn’t mean they don’t exist. I have met sooooo many goldies, I’m a house cleaner so I’ve been in many houses, the ones where they have rotties they’re guard dogs and can’t even be out when I’m there. The ones with goldies are my favorites. I’ve met tons of goldies and all of them were the sweetest dogs ever. I’m sure there are aggressive goldies, but they are bred to be family dogs. Regardless of the breed, the wife expressed that she has dog related trauma and doesn’t want to get one. Let’s add in the fact that dogs are smelly, they need monthly flea medication because they go outside and can bring those fleas inside, they shed, they lick their privates and then lick your face, their paws are dirty from running around outside in their feces and dirt so you have to mop more often, they can cause damage to the house, they bark and are loud, they can be unpredictable as with any animal, especially with kids, they could require surgery or have a lifelong disability or problem that requires expensive medication or treatment, they can cause damage to items or furniture, and they’re A RESPONSIBILITY, they have to get exercise and go on walks, you have to pick up their poo from the yard, you have to PLAY with them. The disabled mother isn’t going to be doing any of this. If she’s saying she’s not going to take on the responsibility of caring for both, that means the husband isn’t doing it, so the wife would have to take on the responsibility. Let me just throw out there that the trauma ALONE is enough to say no. The rest is just the cherry on top. Her trauma is valid, and people who haven’t been bitten or chased by dogs don’t understand the trauma that goes with it, or how it can give someone a full blown panic attack easily. Everything OP’s wife said was valid, and OP invalidating that is infuriating. He clearly doesn’t value the way his wife feels about the situation.

Here In Denver a couple moved in a nice neighborhood with fencing around each yard and the couple had a 7 and 4 year old. The elderly neighbor next door had a rot that tend to get loose often but because the neighbors who always found the rot where adults and knew how to approach it they never seen it get aggressive. One day 2 months after the new couple am their little ones been living next door the dad in their backyard just put in a sit spin jungle gym toy in the back yard and the 4 year old was playing on it the 7 year old on the swing set and the dad just went inside to grab the phone and I guess the 4 year old spinning was driving the Rottie crazy because it jumped the fence mauled the side of the 4 year old the 7 year old trying to save his sister was bit in the face and died the 4 year old needed a lot of surgery and was on life support for a week. Rottie are temperamental as hell super sensitive to nervous reactions and are known for turning on their owners, plus untrained the wife was far from being an AH. I’ve seen more aggressive Rottweilers than I’ve even close ever seeing aggressive Pit Bulls and ive know a lot of pit owners through my 35 years of life and all but 3 of the well over a dozen had super friendly pits, but I’ve never met a friendly rot that their wasn’t a bunch of rules to be around it.

It's her house, she doesn't want an untrained dog in it. It's his mother's responsibility to make sure her dog is trained, and since she is disabled, it is ALSO her job to know where her dog is going to go should her condition put her into the hospital or nursing. As her son, if he doesn't want her in a tent under a bridge somewhere, he needs to board the dog and get it trained until his mother gets a new place. It will encourage her to look for an apartment instead of trying to wiggle herself into being a permanent live-in roommate and it will give the dog a chance to get adopted once she dies because it's clear it isn't coming to stay in his wife's home if anything happens to her. Nursing homes wont take a dog unless the patient can care for it and walk it themselves and it is trained; and there are very few who will accept ANY dog; most will only take teacup sizes, or one the size of a cat. They all expect you to have an emergency home for the pet on call in case anything happens. If his mother hasn't thought about all of these things he should sit her down and make her think about it, because if she loves her dog, she will make sure she has a plan for it's welfare that goes beyond, "Oh my son will adopt it." Because her son isn't going to. Everyone hating on the wife for being unreasonable is missing the point. It's not her job to take care of her husband's Mother's out of control animal. If he want's to insist on doing the right thing, and he should, he needs to explain some facts to the old lady and board that dog.

About a year and a half ago, a neighbor moved in upstairs above me, and would make tons of noise at all hours of the day. It sounded a lot like stopping and screaming. After about a month of that happening every day, we went upstairs and talk to them, and it turns out that they have deaf and nonverbal autistic Daughter that sometimes has severe tantrums. The moment we learned this information it was never a problem again. she was incredibly and very genuinely sorry and wanted to do anything she could to try to help! we have been great friends ever since and we recently decided to upgrade to a bigger apartment after a year and a half, and we already talked with our landlords about letting her take the downstairs apartment after we move out so the next tenants wouldn’t have to worry about it! It’s really a win-win for everybody, and sometimes people have situations where you just need to be patient, whenever she was having a tantrum, we would just turn up the music or the TV that we were watching and honestly we learn to tune it out pretty fast!

Having a Parent move in from my Mom's perspective, it sucks, you can't go anywhere without them, it is like having an Adult child, someone who can take care of themselves, but won't, they will bitch about everything though they get taken care of and should have no complaints. As a Woman(Myself) who had a disabled Husband before he died at 42, it is difficult but not awful, until you realize after all you give to them it isn't good enough, he chose junk food over me, was Obese, that made him handicapped, because his knees gave out and wasn't able to walk again, he kept sneaking good after that, even after all the help offered, he abused my love for him and neglected me and in the end I left, but was still friends with him. I think if the person is reasonable and just needs a home but is self sufficient, maybe, but disabled or has problems being alone, don't because they will take advantage of you.

Both have been equally terrible to myself and my sibling. Abandonment, starvation, physical and emotional abuse, and more. There's a reason why I don't spend much time with them. They only call or visit me for money (I don't give them) or to be their therapist for all the consequences of their actions. I have no idea what to do when this will happen. I know they'll do nothing but complain, and not take care of themselves or my home (rented)

Story where OP wants to move his mom in: I side with his wife. I think he’s the a hole. It’s her house through inheritance, and she raises valid safety concerns. If it’s an old house, it’s possible it lacks the proper accommodations for bigger pets like wide open floor plan or a significant yard. Newer homes implement more designs like that. My house was built in 1937, and the house itself cannot handle more than like 2-3 small pets (I have 2 cats). It’s a very weird, sectioned out floor plan with every room feeling like a cupboard or closet. What I’m getting at is the wife has valid concern and full legal ownership of the house. She gets final say

When my neighbors moved in downstairs they complained about my cats that basically ran all over the house at early hours of the morning. Unfortunately there wasn't really much I could do about it and I knew that the apartment complex floors were not that great. Because I used to live in the middle unit and anything that the upstairs unit did I basically heard it, I think you should automatically assume that you're going to hear everything that goes on upstairs if you move into a bottom unit. It's just that these apartment complexes don't really care about noise and they will do the bare minimum to meet the code enforcement. If you're easily bothered by sound you should live on the top or rent a house or a townhouse

"Have you ever met a bad golden retriever?" Yes. They were the #1 Dog reported for hiting people in Norway several years in a row a few years back. Since everyone knows they're "the perfect family dog" so many ppl who don't know how to raise a dog get them. So yeah Don't worry they too can suck. There is no such thing as bad breeds, only bad owners.

To the woman that was excluded as a maid of honor because it would look bad to the church that "Catholic" is fake. I've been Catholic my whole life and had my best friend who is a single mom as my maid of honor. The church would never say anything about who you choose for your bridal party. They also wouldn't know she is divorced unless John told them. Even then, just because you're divorced doesn't mean you're suddenly not welcome in the church. Glad the sister called off the wedding, but I'm mad she was given such a horrible representation of the Catholic religion.

The whole dog thing, I kinda get. I was bit as a kid, and I am terrified of dogs, so much so, that being near one gives me a near panic attack. I am also autistic and struggle to read body language -- it's already hard enough in people, but with dogs, it's virtually impossible. I fully understand the wife's discomfort and phobia.

Wrong, that is a big problematic breed that for one is untrained. Have you ever been around Rottweilers? Untrained and being around small children is a huge risk an even deadly risk for those kids. Rots are aggressive, temperamental and has only been around this slow moving older women not kids at all being it’s only 2 and MIL is the only owner it’s had. That dog is a huge responsibility, very costly, and a huge risk to the safety of the two small children

I had a colicy baby who kept the whole building up for 6 months .crying hour long every 2 hours. Nothing helped because I did not know of cupfeeding or that chiropractic treatment could help. Luckily I did not have problems whith the rest of the people in the building and no dogs that would ha e better hearing than them.. We lived in the top storey of flats.

My cousin’s golden retriever is a bad golden retriever. He’s massive for a goldie, and was never really socialised with other dogs, which has led him to becoming basically a thug that will pick on smaller dogs. No growling or anything. He just suddenly decides “I don’t like you. I’m going to bit you”.

I mean I totally get the dog story. 1. Op said it's a 2 year old, untrained Rottweiler... that's a BIG dog. Even if it has no history of hurting children, it appears it's not in a position to hurt children living with just the mom anyway and seeing as it's untrained, it could very easily accidentally hurt a child just by jumping on them and trying to play. 2. If the dog isn't trained by 2 years old, it'd honestly be better off rehomed anyway. I feel bad for the dog tbh. OPs wife is right. Mom should rehome it to someone who can train it and give it a good home.

The one where Sam says there is no bad Retrievers. I had neighbours with one. They sent her away to be trained as a guard dog. When she came back, she was AGGRESSIVE. They put a perimeter collar on her, but turned it off a lot. Their kids abused the dog by one holding her in the driveway, then the other going on the street and calling her, with the collar off until she would run out, then calling the collar on and doing it again, laughing when she would get zapped. They started turning the collar off more and more. She went into people's yards and tried to attack them. She was chasing people at each end of the block, walking on side streets. She would come into my yard. One day, she tried to go after me when I turned my back on her. Fortunately for me I knew how to deal with aggressive dogs. I gave a harsh,loud command, and she dropped. They kept the collar turned on for a short while after that. By-law was called by someone. They couldn't do anything because she was in the yard and the collar was on. She was reported constantly. Then it happened. by-law was doing a followup. He went to get out of his truck, and who comes running down the street at him, in full attack mode. He barely made it into his truck. I never blamed the dog, I blamed the owners. Also John, Black, Yellow, and Chocolate Labs are also retrievers. I preferred them over Goldens even before my encounter with this particular one.

I have to tell you... y'all were hating on the wife who didn't want the dog there, but I gotta tell you, I'm on the wife's side. Once her husband finally bothered to ask her WHY she didn't want the MIL there, she said it was because of the dog. It also seems clear from OP's own version that in the past the wife has made efforts to not be around the dog. OP even said that the wife explained that MIL couldn't move in because she would refuse to get rid of the dog...then sure enough when the MIL was offered a place if the dog didn't come, the MIL refused, choosing the dog instead. You keep saying the wife has childhood issues, but can we also look at the fact that her husband is unwilling to see her side even though based on his own description of the situation it seems like she would be the one bearing the responsibility of dealing with a large, potentially dangerous dog. I had a Rotwieler Newfoundland mix (he passed away from old age in 2021), so I know that the fact that the dog is a rottweiler does not inherently mean that it is dangerous, however introducing a 2-year-old dog who is apparently untrained (Wife says this several times and OP never clarifies that dog is in fact trained, so it makes me think that it really isn't) to a new living situation which would now include young kids IS DANGEROUS. Is something guaranteed to happen? No, of course not. Is it more likely when a dog is stressed? Absolutely. Moving into a new living situation is stressful for a dog too and add in loud children (I'm assuming they're loud because kids being loud is normal) and the dog could be easily agitated and bite or attack one of them (or even OP as it seems like she could have to help take care of it). The wife set her boundary: the mother could move in, but not the dog. She is not being heartless, she just knows her MIL enough to know she can't live without her dog. I've even ignoring the fact that she inherited the house...even if this was a house they bought together my position is the same. I think that OP should take a minute to think about the fact that he HADN'T EVEN CONSIDERED HIS WIFE'S SIDE before he got angry and just decided that he would rather stick with his original feelings than realize that he was actually being the AH. He clarified that SHE IS IN THERAPY (presumably in relation to the dog fear), but he STILL hadn't thought about it. It is a classic case of an inconsiderate spouse trying to gaslight his wife and strangers on the internet into thinking his wife's the inconsiderate one. I call BS. OP is the AH. MIL not an AH by this version, but nto much info there...seems like her and wife get along...so probably not the AH either.

Totally agree. The wife is the only reasonable one. The husband is wrong to put his mother first and not his wife and kids, and the mother in law is unreasonable to think she has the right to move in with the dog. Other options? Find another place for the mother and dog. Pay for it. Go over there daily and OP YOU take care of her. Sorry not sorry.

AFAIK as I know the mother in law just rejected to move in without the job, and didn’t force her way to move in. The is wrong for downplaying her trauma because it’s just a dog(which is a very big deal to some and a very small deal to others), I wonder if any of the comments told OP that he is behavior is unintentionally wrong

I think some people are not aware of just how HUGE rotties are, they are my absolute favorite breed and I love them but they are huge and often don’t know their own strengths, especially if they’ve never been around kids, and even if besides that it’s crazy to think it’s okay to try and force your partner to allow a new animal into the house, animals are not for everyone especially large ones

…my parents got engaged at an unplanned point. my father proposed to my mother kind of twice. the first time a day before the second. he asked her to marry him and she was like “are you sure? i need you to think about this and make sure.” (side note: they had been dating for 3 months) and she didn’t give a no or yes. the next day he was like “i am so sure, i’d marry you in that grease monkey over there right now.” and he made a blade of grass into a ring, she said yes, and they’ve been married for almost 31 years. and eventually she did get a real engagement ring

Moving into my inlaws early on during the pandemic and that was the beginning of the end of my marriage. I love my (soon to be ex) MIL but I hate living with her. It's just a bad arrangement for me and it's so stressful and needlessly tense. Also, I have lupus too 😂 I wouldn't be able to take in any parents to be a caregiver because I'm so busy caring for me. So yea. The wife in that story could have been kinder about it but I do understand.

Nah. On the infertility story. Not only did this man insult her, he doubled down. He's the asshole for giving his shitty opinion on a very sensitive topic without any regard for OP's feelings, completely unprompted, and then doubling down when told it wasn't necessary, the sister is an asshole for not only sharing personal, sensitive information that OP clearly didn't want to give (to say nothing of the fact that it was medical info), but also for being with this shitty man and defending him when he was clearly out of line. I'm childfree by choice and male and even I think it's one of the most insensitive, invasive and idiotic questions to bring up, particularly given that women tend to bear the brunt of it. If someone doesn't have kids they either: - don't want to (for now or ever) and are often tired of having to explain themselves - want to but it's not happening and that can be very upsetting Sure, you're giving your honest opinion. Still an inconsiderate asshole. Shut up and accept that nobody asked for or cares about your shitty opinions. In my eyes, OP just shared an honest opinion right back
