Serie is such an amazing character. When she's talking down at Frieren, it was to try and provoke her, get a rise out of her, to see that spark in her she wants to see. But Frieren doesn't have it--she's a peaceful easy going Elf with no real ambition or desire to change things. So Frieren doesn't pass--which is fine. It's great cause Serie is right. Frieren doesn't really need to be a first class mage, she has no need to meet the qualifications. Only reason she's taking the test is because they need someone with the credentials to move freely and Fern didn't wanna do it alone. There was no reason to pass her. It really shows how Frieren and Fern are kind of the antithesis of the usual shounen characters; no ambition or drive pushing them to reach the heights of magic, but with the depth and interesting character lives that carries the series forward. Talking to Serie really highlights that. I also love how Serie looks like she talks down on her human pupils but honestly really loves them. Flamme, Lernen, and Sense especially--she complains about them on the surface, but we're shown how she knows their personalities so well, begrudges their short lives, and remembers their favorite spells. No matter how much she complains, she keeps taking more talented students and keeps talking to them about magic, because she loves them and magic. She said she didn't want to take on Flamme's work of running the magic association, and here she is doing it anyways instead of being that ancient Elf who holes up in a tower and cuts herself off from the world.
Yes Serie is talking down to Frieren, but the truly annoying thing is, she's right. Serie can be so annoying, but as Frieren herself says, Series intuition is always right.

16:16 it makes sense. Imagine having a super talented granddaughter laze around for the majority of her life only to be motivated by the last hour. Frieren spent her days for 1000 years in that forest doing nothing but mana supression until Himmel recruited her, she only started collecting spells AFTER Himmel complimented her spells, she was only active for 80 years after 1000 years of doing absolutely nothing. If you were a teacher or a parent and saw a young talented child waste their life like that. You'd be disappointed too. I mean, sure, it's Frierens life, she can live it however she wants, but Serie doesn't have to be happy about it. Serie is more disappointed at Frieren, an Immortal elf, than her human students who strive to be better with their limited lifespan. Serie complains a lot about her students reaching the height of their potential at such an old age only to die sooner rather than later, she laments their short lifespan. Imagine how many Himmel like people have Serie lost.
10:22 Speaking of which, the reason why that 2nd test becomes so hard was because of Frieren, her apperances made the test more extreme than it should be. Looking back, I'm unsure why people talking about how Sense create unfair/difficult situation for them but her test is actually easier than 1st one. She didn't force anyone to kill each others, She didn't ask anyone to find a specific treasure that hidden somewhere in dungeon which may equal to catching that sonic birds, and all they need to do is cooperating with each others and they may pass unless they are being careless when moving or encountering unavoiding traps; she even prepaired escaping golems for that kind of situations anyway; it may even be in her calculation that (i'm assumed) she even know that for this time, her replica has already had a counter-person, assuming they may pass 2nd test easily depending on how they solve it. But, what happened was because people are distrusting each others due to the 1st test and personal takes so they splitted, just like Denken said, and Frieren's apperance created a replica of her which none of others in that dungeon could counter it unless she, herself has to do it with helps/plans. Frieren was actually the one that boost that dungeon raid from Hard/Extreme level to Hell level. And speaking of unfair, Sense was right, their 1st class mage title was not for showing, it's a matter of dead and alive especially when many of them have to go to the Northern region where remain of Demon King army still lurking around, so they have to be a capable or extraordinary people who can overcome those situations. If not, what does it even mean to have the title when their arse got rekt by halfass demon due to lacks of exps and abilities anyway. All of the people Serie failed so far shows those traits on them at that point in their life (which may change in the future) Basically, Sense is like; don't wish for fair life, wish for the strength to overcome the unfair instead; and it's true on this case 🤣
To me, I see Richter as the classic character in anime that's incredibly strong but is flawed in other areas outside of strength. If this was a test of just straight up power, then I think he's up there for sure. But it's hard for me to gas up how strong he is when we've seen him take nothing but Ls in these past 2 exams (especially when his loss against Kane/Lawine could've been avoided).

I love everything of frieren. Every character is so natural, we all can feel the emotions, struggles and mistakes. Also the fullfilling something that we sense subconscious. Im excited of season two. When madhouse start something, they end it also the best way. We know all thats not ended here. Question: The intuition serie has tells us, everyone would probably die. Glad that Serie take the steps to prevent this
That "It's Fluctuating." from Fern gave me GOOSEBUMPS. She is far more talented than that old mage Lernen, who even saw through Frieren's concealed mana.
The named ones pretty much all have more depth than romantic leads in other animes. Apperently the success of the anime in Japan has resulted in the author announcing a side story manga one off of several of the more popular secondary characters.
If Frieren wasn’t in the 2nd exam I do think Denken, Ubel, Wirbel, Methode would pass. Ubel is was the perfect counter for Sense’s replica and with Denken’s guidance and everyone else’s intelligence I do believe they would’ve made it.
Good question of the day. I will say NOBODY passes because the only reason they worked as a team was because Denken was shaking in his boots at the idea of facing Frieren. He probably would've tested Sense with the help of the others at the time before everyone reached the bottom had trouble finishing Sense clone quickly got ganked by other clones and some people actually die to Methode and Fern
They may have hard counter to Sense, but none of them managed to defeat Denken. As much as Frieren is WAAAAY Beyond Denken. I think Denken is also way beyond everyone else, He's THE Imperial Mage for a reason. At the very least, more of them could have died trying to defeat him.

Honestly even then it's incredibly lucky they beat the demon king at all despite not having the "real" hero in their party (Himmel couldn't pull the sword from the stone).
I think the serie feet thing is a clue. If this were any other anime that I'd just go with the artist has a foot fetish. Instead I think it shows serie is from a time before shoes. Maybe. This anime is too deep. Breaks my brain.
If Frieren hadn't participated, I think Sense's clone would've been camping out at the bottom as the boss instead. So Ubel would've taken it out later, but it also wouldn't have been wandering around shanking people for early outs on the upper floors and more of them may have reached the bottom. Ubel did get to the bottom pretty late though; if Denken/Methode/Richter/Laufen/Fern/Lawine/Kanne had tried to mass attack it before she got there it's hard to predict who it would've picked off before going down. Probably the older mages with enough mana to do a bunch of blocking with magic shields (so not Richter would've gone done the same way by trying to block with rocks that the clone punches right through). Fern's stealth and Laufen's superspeed may actually have worked as well, though I'm not sure Laufen has much useful to contribute to the fight offensively since standing still to swing a big stick around would sacrifice her survivability advantage.
If frieren wasnt there, I think the greatest threat during the seond exam is sense's clone but ubel could defeat it. Since frieren clone was not there the treasure room wont be sealed with the her lock spell, making it much more easier for the other examinee to sneak in and destroy the spiegel. Frieren actually made the second test harder. Maybe the list of passing examinee wont be much different even if frieren was not there....??
Good point! I forgot about the lock spell on the door 😅 In that case, I agree and the people that got there early like Denken's group would've been pretty much in the clear. Unless Sense was guarding the door instead or something 😂
I think one reason Fern clearly hearlds the Era of Humans is because Fern is clearly not the type of mage Serie usually likes. She is too humble and isn't aggressive enough, al lot like Frieren. Fern is so talented that Serie couldn't imagine letting her slip through her fingers tho.
There's enough content that they could make a second season at the same ratio of manga:anime. There's even an excellent stopping point at almost exactly where that line will be. The current season looks like it will end on chapter 60. Chapter 119 is an excellent stopping point for season 2.
The people who would.have passed the second exam without Frieren would likely be everyone who passed the third exam, plus Wirbel's group and probably Lawine.
Denken would have passed anyway because he’s set to do it and has no problem sharing information and coordinating everyone’s efforts. Würbel and Übel probably too. Land is somehow an enigma though. Methode and probably one or two more but yeah With fewer people less replicas to fight. I think the first test was brutal enough tough so Sense really did a good job to find a good balance between a hard exam and not having anyone promising killed
16:24 not really . One of the main reasons she failed frieren is because Frieren is only strong amongst other races except her own , for an Elf she is weak
Well let me elaborate rq and let me know if you still disagree or not. When I said "she's just bitter", I meant it as in she seems bitter about the fact that Frieren has so much potential as a mage but she goes against everything Serie thinks an elf mage should be. I think that's the reason she's trying so hard to get undermine/invalidate her accomplishments as a mage. What she's saying is ultimately true but mentioning it serves no purpose other than to get under Frieren's skin
