Shear scraping is a less aggressive way of scraping and can provide a better surface than using a scraper flat on the tool rest. Every wood turner should have this technique in his arsenal.
I upload a new wood turning tip every Tuesday and a wood turning tutorial video each and every Friday so Ya’ll come back, hear?

I've seen a few videos where the bottom sharp corners of a skew were rounded a bit. They say it prevents damaging or nicking your tool rest surface. It seems to me that shear scraping would be easier to control with the bottom corners of the scraper rounded a bit. Do you think this would be advantageous on a scraper as well?

Absolutely. I did this on the square scraper I made in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qt5Ge3XORzU.html

Question, Mike: Is there any reason to NOT put a top bevel (creating a negative rake) on all of my scrapers?

Excellent question, George. Not sure if I have a good answer that fits everyone, but I will be covering negative rake scrapers in the next Friday video.

Thanks for the info Mike. I was having trouble with the interior of my 16" platter until I tried sheer scraping after watching the video. Brilliant, sharpened my scraper (small) and 3/8 gouge on my diamond hone and hey presto, smooth as. I'm still in the learning curve after only a few weeks of turning. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

"...with a very sharp instrument..." Speak for yourself; there's plenty of folks, including myself, who can't put a decent edge on their tools.

David Shaper Thanks for that. Great topic for future videos. "If it is almost sharp, it will almost work."

Yes, one of the reasons I enjoy woodturning. SCraping i slike any other techniques. You have to play with it to understand it and use it well.

Thanks Mike. I just blew a bowl up by scraping the inside outer diameter. I think you just did a video on that but I did not heed your advice. But I noticed in this video you were scraping the inside outer diameter. Isn't that a no no? Thanks for the help.

Shear scraping is less aggressive which can allow you to scrape the inside near the rim. But be gentle and cautious.

doesn't hurt to round the lower edge of the scraper so it does not hang on tool rest I bet.

I should probably have mentioned that. See my response to Gil Grace below.

Mike Peace Woodturning i love that little speer point scraper you fashioned, I am not a real bowl turner spending most of my time in back up a skew, but I believe I will make one. That one looks like even I could drive it. thanks
