Shearwater has been killing it lately. This new Peregrine TX is one hell of a unit. It's probably the last dive computer a typical recreational diver will ever need. If I didn't already have a Perdix 2, I would totally buy one.
So disappointed in my base model Peregrine. Did a lot of research before buying it and it has proved to be so Unreliable. The screen fogs over for the first 5 minutes of every dive. I returned it under warranty to the UK centre who stipped it down and could find no fault. They changed all seals and returned it. I do not dive in the UK so had no way to check it was working properly until my next dive trip. I fly 6 hours and board my liveaboard to find the screen fogs over just like before. You can't even read the screen. I try to keep it cool out of the sun but it makes no difference. I have never seen any other computer do this. My old suunto viper worked 10 years never any issues. Everybody comments and tells me my computer is flooded. I am now speaking to shearwater again trying to resolve. Very disappointed.
So what is a dive centre likely to say when you rock up with your Peregrine TX and Swift Transmitter? Will it be a certainly sir we can accommodate that or sorry but you can’t put that onto our equipment? You’ll need your own regulator for that… I’m looking to buy my first computer for recreational purposes and I’m wondering what dive centres opinions are likely to be. Perhaps current owners of the Perdix or Teric might have an insight?
I wouldn't have thought twice about doing it for you when I was working at a Dive Center. Most decent operations will be fine with it, it's quick and easy to fit them, you can even do it yourself in a couple of minutes with a hex key and wrench but, it's nice to ask first. The only problem scenario I can see is if they use 1st stages with only 1 HP Port and you need to choose between an SPG and the transmitter. I'd message them ahead of time just to be sure
I know there is a big form factor difference between this and the Tern TX, but is there any other major differences? I'm torn. 56 year old eyes thinks this might be better, but regular watch over chunky box leans towards Tern. Any big factors to help break the tie?
They are quite similar but, there are some differences other than the size. The main one is that the Tern will act as a wristwatch and tell the time etc. where the Peregrine will just act as a dive computer. Otherwise, the *number of buttons*, the Tern has four buttons compared to just two on the Peregrine. Not a huge issue but, does affect how you interact with the computer. The Tern TX has a *freediving mode* where the Peregrine does not. *Battery life* is another slight difference, the Peregrine TX has a 30hr battery vs 20hr on the Tern TX (depending on brightness etc.) And the *logbook size* , funnily enough the Tern TX has a larger logbook with 500hr vs 400 on the Peregrine. Not a huge issue as 400 hours is a lot of diving to backup before you lose them.
IMO the Peregrine form factor is better suited to cold miserable lake diving in low visibility with bulky exposure suits & gloves, surface intervals spent in a car park trying to warm up. Tern form factor better suited to glorious tropical diving with minimal gear and surface intervals sunning oneself on a dive boat :D
I'm WAITING for this computer! Other square shape computer are Tech computer, so they have over spec for recreational diver. My eyes become weak because of age, it means round shape computer, like Tern, is too small to see in 40cm range. Shearwater technicians agreed my opinion.... It's time to get AI computer! Also, I need a backup computer so I can solve this issue at once!
Can u please anwser this question. Can I have my depth. Dive time. No deco time. Air pressure and compass. All on the same screen at the same time? Can I have all five of those things. Or so I have to keep hitting buttons to switch back and forth to the compass??
So Bummed. I really wanted the compass function but traded it away when I bought my regular Peregrine. I now have 8 dives on the unit, but would have waited for sure to get the new TX if I knew it was going to be released.
Looks like a nice computer! But unless I care about air integration or a compass, is there any reason to pay the additional money for a TX instead of a regular peregrine? Awesome video once again!
Not really. The log book is a bit larger on the TX also but, if you don't need AI or a compass then the regular Peregrine will suit you just fine. It's nice that Shearwater gives you the choice
@@dixter1652 the peregrine battery has a built in rechargeable battery. It charges wirelessly using the charge pad that comes with it. This is a great feature, so much better than a battery that has to be replaced. It means the computer body does not have to be opened to access the battery and then resealed. No need to replace the o ring either. Once fully charged I easily get a weeks live aboard diving without having to charge it again. Nothing could be simpler.
@@daviddean15 yep.. I read the manual... sooner or later the battery will go dead and then you will have to send it in to have it replaced...at what cost ??? I'd rather have a user replaceable battery option then I don't get a surprise on a dive trip with a dead brick that won't be able to dive... it is great that it recharges wirelessly but that is the only good thing about this battery on this computer...
Looking into this one. I love my peregrine and it’ll be a great backup to his one. I was looking at the Tern too - will have to compare! Thanks for this.
Wow! that is a really great deep dive into this Divecomputer. Thank you very much as alway Mark. Is there any chance that you will be doing a same style video for the Shearwater Tern TX?
@@ScubaDiverMagazine Oh cool. Thanks for the reply. But now you took out all of the excitement;-) Nono just kidding. I'm really looking forward to that video cause I'm pretty shure this will guide towards which of these two i will buy later this year. Keep up the great work i really think that you are doing great!
I am still waiting for the Mares Quad CI. I know that Shearwater is of course a more prestigious brand of dive computer, but still at the price point of €750 dive computer with transmitter, colour screen, nitrox, trimix, Z16C, rechargeable battery, built-in Bluetooth it will be a great competitor.
Will the Peregrine TX work with Aqualung Transmitters? The Perdix seems to do it. I bought the Transmitter few weeks ago for my I770R because Shearwater said they had no plans to do a Peregrine TX... And I will not buy a Transmitter for twice the money when I have one...
Hi. I feel very disappointed and cheated by suunto. I m msdt and i was actually using a d6i novo as an instructoe and always advising students to use at least a zoop while diving to learn how to use it while on the course so theu re comfortable when they leave alone...i feel deeply regretfulknowing that suunto was unloading defective pressure sensors that i helped them sell as part of my course. What do you thi k would be a solid computer to move to today and to advise students to get as a brand that reputable and serviceable and reliable not suunto.
Fantastic! Doing my open water dives this upcoming weekend, I wanted AI for my dive computer but couldn't really justify splurging for the perdix 2. I'm taking this as a sign..
The opening should be “You asked for it. Shearwater said they had no plans to do it, so you shelled out for a prefix. And now it turns out they were doing it…”
The main differences are the battery and tech modes. You can get a bit more customisability on the Perdix and it uses better button technology but, you can find a comparison chart of their computers on Shearwater's website.
Easy, similar to other Shearwaters, tap the left button to _Select Gas_ and it brings up your list of gases that you've set up. The computer will also recommend a better mix if one is available and give you the choice of mixes that are set up
This looks like a great alternative to the perdix for those who don’t need all the tech specific options. would get one if i wasn’t saving for a dry suit.
@@cwilliams6884 just checked there is about a $200 difference here in australian between the TX and the perdix 2 i guess you’d have to weigh up the differences to see if the perdix is something you will get more use out of.
Cool, just looked through specs: seem like this has a lower res LCD (vs higher res AMOLED), and longer battery life. Perhaps better suited to cold water and/or tech diving vs the Tern TX
funny my petrel2 Fischer cable is still a better computer and I only paid 500 for it 👀🙈fancy computer very nice but if it can’t do full trimix while telling me my ppo2 I don’t want it
