Great video, I'm considering this as my primary for recreational solo diving and a user review is what I was looking for. Wished I had watched a few days earlier, missed the cut off for the draw :(
Excellent persnal dive review on the Peregrine. Definitely considering it as a replacement for my Suunto. I appreciate the positive and negative points you cover in your videos.
Nice review James! I would love to see a video overview on technical classes. Also, i'm not sure what your experience is, but around here, almost everyone who dives deep is diving a rebreather. I'm curious what you think about helium mixes OC ($$$) vs. CCR. Thanks!
Enjoyed the video, I am not a diver yet but getting ready to take lessons. I have been watching your videos to understand how things work, get more knowledge on a subject that I know nothing about. But I am very interested in. Lived in Colorado most my life, now living 6 months a year in Mexico. You talk about digital compass in this video. Can you do a video on why you want one, where to wear one or is it in the program on computer watch. How to use it while diving. Same principles as on land? Thank you looking for for more information/ knowledge
I'm on the verge of buying the peregrine, but the Battery is my only concern... 30h will become under well under 20h within a year or two with how Lithium batteries decay... technically still enough when you remember to recharge. I assume there's no easy way to get a new Li battery in there without breaking the integrity of the case, even if you are technically capable enough to solder in a new one yourself?
Yes on vibration alarms. I don't particularly care for audible alarms. If you've ever been on a group dive with a bunch of inexperienced divers you'll know why.
I hope Shearwater eventually releases an AI version. This ticks all the boxes for me except AI. I don’t have any near-term plans to jump into tech diving so I’m looking for a great recreational diving computer that is big and easy to read.
Hey James, just got my OW on Sept 8th, including my course, I have 11 logged dives so far. A Zoop Novo came in the console of the used reg set I purchased (Hollis DCX, LX200) but I always wanted a "new" computer. (my course was supposed to start last April, but pandemics happen) I purchased my regs back in March. Always loved the idea of a Shearwater, as my primary computer. I jumped at the Peregrine when I saw it. Dive 3 on it was yesterday. The vibration alert worked great through my dry suit and was very easy to address with my dry gloves on. My Peregrine is currently sitting in a bucket of warm water, thanks for that tip. I turned 59, last Saturday, and my old man eyes love the big screen. There will only be recreational diving in my future, so this will be my primary, until, hopefully an AI model comes out. Time will tell if that comes to fruition, or I get a Perdix AI. I am on Vancouver Island, so Shearwater is very much a local business for me, one ferry ride away. I hope to dive, 2-4 times a week, as shore diving here is fantastic. You have been a big source of info for me since last March. Thanks for what you do.
I'm about your age. I boosted the screen to full brightness. Very easy to read. Doesn't this computer almost seem to scold you if you're messing up? Fine, a current caught me and I went up too fast. The up arrows go red and my wrist buzzes! Ok ok!
At last a great review of the peregrine... but exactly like you said, I still can’t make up my mind: peregrine vs perdix from the start... I know I wanna go deeper 😗🤷♂️ but it’s bloody expensive 😬 winning the contest would solve my existential questions... thanks for your vid 👌🏻
Echo4Romeo is my youtube username, and I would love to dive this computer. However, with my luck being what it is... I could buy 99 raffle tickets out of 100 and still not win, but nonetheless, here is my attempt to win something yet again! lol.
Good Video and I must say that you did a great review of the Shearwater rather than just reading the specifications. I was think about buying this as I am new to the Scuba world. Thank you so much for the information.
I’m a new diver. I have vision problems. I have experimented with a few dive computers in order to determine which one to buy. Shearwater is the only one I can actually see during my dives. Pick me, pick me.
Just got my OW couple weeks ago and now want to get my own equipment but have no idea what i'm looking at with so many options. glad i found this channel, definitely helping me a lot.
Best reviews on youtube. FINALLY a proper review instead of a “I think it does this, it has this feature”.....”review”. Many thanks James. Hopefully I’m lucky enough to win this bad boy and some of that divers ready swag! Cheers, and dive safe.
Thanks for the video James. I watched it last summer when I purchased the Peregrine and found your video to be instructive. Today I did a beach dive, long walk, found a beach shower did a ‘rinse’ of my gear and more of a long walk. When I went to download my dive the computer wouldn’t turn on and I was like…Grrrr. But your final comments had stuck with me of warm water rinse. Had you not shared your knowledge and experience I’d have thrown a tantrum about my relatively new computer going TU. I still dive my console with my original Aeries Pro hockey puck that doesn’t date adjust beyond 2012 (hey it still works) but the warm water soak for ten minutes fixed the issue and I will continue to give the TLC recommended.
Thanks for the in-depth review of the Peregrine! I’ll be sharing this review with divers to whom I am already recommending the Peregrine, being a Perdix owner and Shearwater fan, for those same reasons of solid build and fantastic service department. I would love to win the Peregrine (and the swag) take it diving!
You know I've watched this video like 30x ... cuz I dislike all dive comps except the perdix... since i will not be doing superman deco dives like you super divers do, I am buying the Peregrine from a Local diver from Rockville, MD. I only state that because they dive with Ocean Divers, thats how I met you, thats how I got my sticker, and how I will remember it forever. i love it. Cheers james! Thank you for the thorough review. Your videos are as great!!! Every diver needs to subscribe to you. Cheers Blood!
From Puerto Rico, After the Hurricanes it has been difficult to keep all my equipment up to date. That computer is in my mind, but right now I can't buy it. congratulations on your channel.
Would you choose the Peregrine over the Aqualung i470TC for a beginner diver? In your comparison of the 4 computers under $500 you chose the aqualung, but now that you've had a chance to use the Peregrine, would you change your answer?
I don't know about the technical diving stuff. I mean technical divers learn to dive by run tables. You can set the computer to gauge mode and be done with it. I don't know why a non-tmx computer should stop you from technical dives? Sure it makes stuff a little bit more easy but I have the feeling its not mandantonary for technical diving? At least the tec divers in my region are still using deco-on-the-fly, runtables and bottom timers. TMX computers are not a blocker for them.
thanks a lot for your honest videos including this.. and I do have a question which I'm sure I'll get the guidance on, I was recently certified as a divemaster and willing only to remain in recreational diving area.. I do not mind to invest in Perdix 2 if AI & digital compass will make the big difference against the peregrine.. so my question is , do I need really to go for Perdix "as a recreational diver" or I can have peregrine and save the rest of the money for something else? thanks again for your efforts and hope soon I'll have the chance to be in your dive center and learn more
New OW NAUI diver here. I’d use that when I dive to clean up garbage from Tampa Bay. I’m currently using an analog 3:1 Sherwood gauge and a dive table.
I am just starting my diving journey (just certified a couple days ago) and I'm looking at getting a Peregrine as my first dive computer. I may some day want to go technical, but that won't be for a while yet.
I could use a computer period, don't have one yet. I still use just dive tables. I am planning going further with my training, as of now I have rescue and plan on getting a few specialties. Maybe someday I will go off into the tech world but for now I enjoy diving whenever and wherever I can.
I found your channel because I recognized the adventure outfitters shop that you visited! I will be doing my open water certification through them at the end of this month (October) so it was great to see them on here! They are great people! This computer would be great for me as I am a beginner and haven’t purchased one yet! My boyfriend and I will be diving in Kenya this Christmas so it would be great to have! Thanks for all of your informative videos, alway appreciate transparency :)
Shearwater has the BEST customer service EVER!! Their service to my Teric Watch computer was extremely fast! Also...when I had a retaining band to my watch break...they sent me an entire new band!
Nice well-rounded review...appreciate the dirty details! My wife and I finished our open water certification yesterday, so total rookies just starting the diving journey, and will be soon in the market for a computer. Your channel has been a great resource for 'real deal' SCUBA information - look forward to future videos!
I’m trying to get my dive gear first before going onto the course so I can start diving With money tight this would be a great prize and let me look into saving for other equipment I have my beady eyes on
Love my Eon Core. Even has a compass that’s pretty good. Pretty sure it can do trimix too but I’m not doing Tec for another 75 dives. I’d use this as a backup or save a dive.
Question, Shearwater Perdix AI, Mares Genius, Scubapro G2, have you been able to inspect all three and which do you suggest for someone wanting to eventually get into Tech diving? Thanks!
Hi James an interesting review I thought. I had expected another 'Oh you must have a shearwater' style video but I thought I thought you made a good case on this either way. Good to hear the negatives also for a change. The lack of AI is a deal braeker I would think for a lot of people, its a shame. Graet review though thnaks, enjoy watching you channel. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi James, good review. Would love to win this computer for my daughter Lauren who doesn’t have her own yet but has a life long ambition of doing as many dives as she can 😁🐠🦐🐙👏👍
Actually, I think this computer is ideal for a beginner, if the beginner wants a computer at all. It is, by far, the easiest to use. Now a real beginner (not yet certified) probably doesn't need a computer. That person will be so task loaded that he won't be looking at anything but his spg when asked about his air. (I remember this well.) Such a diver will be on shallow dives and should be carefully controlled by the instructor. What I have found is that that buying a $200 computer is a waste. It will be much tougher to use, and so it will not be used much. I'm becoming a Shearwater fan because I find it makes me a better diver.
