Shebang 1966 -1 year Anniversary- Stop! In The Name Of Love, The Supremes

Shebang was a daily dance show that ran on KTLA channel 5 in southern California from 1965-1968. On this episode host Casey Kasem (American Top 40) with guests Charlie O’Donnell, Don Grady (My Three Sons/The Yellow Balloon), Dick & Dee Dee (The Mountain’s High), Jewel Akens (The Birds and the Bees) and “others” celebrate the show’s 1 year anniversary by replaying the songs played on the first show from ‘65 including this #1 hit by the Supremes.
Dancers: As both shows were filmed in Hollywood, you might recognize some American Bandstand regulars including Jeff Hight (Swing Dance contest, I Fought The Law spotlight dance) with Melody McMurray dancing up on the Shebang riser, Sam at 6:13 (both Sam and Melody did Rate A Record for “Children and Flowers/It’s A Day”) as well as Steven Schreiner and the “ubiquitous” Famous Hooks, both on the Shebang riser singing Happy Birthday at the beginning of the show.
….And both Shebang and I celebrate our 1 year anniversary as I posted my first American Bandstand clip 1 year ago this week (that’s lame, I know, but it was a good excuse to highlight this fun Shebang clip, lol).
In the month after Shebang began in March of ’65, the April 24th TV Guide “As We See It” editorial section complained about the growth of “teen-age wriggle ‘n’ writhe shows, seven of which can be seen by viewers in Los Angeles each week: The Lloyd Thaxton Show, Shebang, 9th Street West, Hullabaloo, Hollywood a Go Go, Shiveree, and Shindig” (not to mention American Bandstand). The article went on to say these shows “offer long-haired boys and sloppily groomed girls” and have “turned dancing, which used to be graceful and romantic and fun, into a very questionable spectator sport”. I can’t imagine what this uptight writer would have thought about dancing and music just 4 or 5 years later, much less today! Hopefully they mellowed out in the 70’s. 🙂
Thank you to all you “wriggle ‘n’ writhers” and those (like me) who wish we could have been “back in the day”...or at least enjoy watching them now. Thanks for all of your comments and support this year, especially ABDancers-Jeff and dancer don- Don. This has been an absolute pleasure and I hope to continue posting many more clips in the future!
Airdate: March 16, 1966

I had never heard of the show, but i got to know Casey very well after meeting him at the Great Peace March in 86. I would call him on the phone and we would talk for a while. Plus i talked to him at the Peace Rallies. He was much more than a Dee Jay or a TV Host. He was also an activist and very loving-caring person. I miss him badly. We need more like him. God Bless you Casey. Miss you man.

Did Dick Clark work for Casey Kasem? I didn't even think that these guys knew each other. However, Dick Clark knew how important it was to do your own thing. In the 1950's when he was starting out, he left WOLF in Upstate New York (A Subsidiary of ABC) to work for WFIL in Philadelphia, PA., adn before he even did American Bandstand, he paid his dues. Doing Commercials for Tootsie Rolls, and even hosting a Real Estate Program. Casey Kasem would be the Man whose American Top 40 I used to listen to every Sunday from 10:00 to 2:00. I learned so much from him. He died on My Birthday so I have a soft spot for him.

I imagine there were a lot of the older generation who didn’t “get it” back then with music and styles changing so quickly. It blew my mind that someone would think that about dancers and dance shows even in ‘65 with kids in their nice dresses and suits. I hope I’m not that “out of touch” today, but when I listen to current pop music and modern dancing, like twerking (?), I kind of wonder, lol! Thank you for everything Don!!! -Aaron

Looks like Famous and June in one of the opening shots. From the legendary KTLA 5 in LA, possibly the greatest indie stations in history. KTLA was once the domain of Klaus Landesburg, who single handedly invented live remote news as we know it today. He pioneered the much of the technology to take TV out of its studio constraints. Many syndicated programs today are also produced at KTLA facilities who essentially pioneered the concept of "for hire" production services.

This program was produced by a major TV station of the time, which would've been technologically advanced, but look at how crude the video visual effects are. But it was in color! As they very proudly told you more than once. This was when the national TV networks had just shifted to producing and broadcasting all their primetime shows in color for the first time.

You know what's so funny on the UK Soap Opera Coronation Street they talked about Scooby Doo, and they didn't realize the Voice of Shaggy was none other than Casey Kasem himself. From the 1970's to the 1980's when UK Music was at it's peak he would announce The Number One Song by Acts like Elton John, Rod Stewart (although he's scottish) Olivia Newton John (British Born) Wham, The Police, Tears For Fears, Banarama and countless others. Also they each did so much for Young People playing music doing Cartoon Voices and the like. I was surprised when Casey Kasem and his Wife Jean were at one of the Bandstand Anniversary Specials but I didn't know at the time that Casey worked for Dick Clark since he had a small interest in Shebang.

The show certainly LOOKS like a poor man's American Bandstand.

Cynthia Pickett It was a local program in LA that didn't have a network TV budget. That was true of many local TV dance shows at the time. If you look up the history of Shebang you'd be surprised to see many rock-soul legends who appeared on that show before hitting AB. The Doors, the Seeds, Turtles all were on there before having national exposure. Shebang was RICH in talent in many ways.
