Welcome to my channel! Here you'll find folklore from across the British Isles. In this video I look into the folklore of sheep and shepherds from across Britain. I start by looking at the origins of some of their oldest customs, then move into luck and fortune. I also make mention of the Yan, Tan, Tethera sheep counting method which you may be familiar with.
Music used:
Canny Shepherd Laddies (opening tune)
The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Are there any old cattle superstitions and beliefs you could expound on? My Grandpa was a respected cattleman in Missouri and Kansas, but for some reason this sheep video made me remember back to those days when he had cattle.

I've been reading the Tiffany Aching series from Terry Pratchett lately. Alongside folklore and research etc. It really emphasizes how much the shepherds had a distinct culture and customs. Thanks for this because I probably never would've known about most of this. Save the Baa baa black sheep rhyme as that one made it to America and I learned it as a child.

My grandfather was exempt from enlistment during WW2 due to him being the only male sibling in his family so he went to work on a farm to provide food for troops and civilians and eventually ended up owning the farm until selling up in the 1970's strange thing is he never told me any stories like this maybe due to some sort of superstition . This video opened my eyes to the tales thank you for that . Have a like .

That was so interesting, I have loved sheep all my life, even the smell of the wool is just beautiful, walking on the Yorkshire Moors with my late father, rescuing one with its head stuck in the fence, I spent the rest of my young adult life in Blandford, never knew about the ghost sheep, although I have encountered being touched on the shoulder in one of the old charity shops, that was weird. 🐑💕

As a native of Beverley, I have some experience of the wool trade and its history. Folks reckon that 'Baa baa black sheep' originates in The Yorkshire Wolds. The line 'One for the little boy who lives/cries down the lane' has been sanitised to 'lives down the lane' because people equate 'cries' with being sad, but what is actually going on here is the theft of 1/3 of a v valuable black fleece. The little boy shouts, or cries to warn of the presence of the authorities, and when the coast's clear 'VOOM!' As fast as possible on horseback to Market Weighton (mid way twixt Beverley and York) to a dodgy dealer, who weighs the 1/3 fleece and coughs up sufficiently to ease the Winter privation bearing down on a subsistence farmer under the yoke of tyranny.. As a true reiver, I trust you to have some empathy with this bold and enterprising youngster. Black wool is fab also.. Ask Richard Duke of Gloucester! 🌟👍

There was this one video, it was one of the most inspiring video's I'd ever seen. (14 reasons why I am a W.N.) If you have a channel on another platform please let me know, lord of Durham. My husband was a gangster and a drinker. God began to call to him, and he gave up drinking, and took up marathon running. One day, while running on a mountain road, he saw a little lamb, accompanied by two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. The Holy Spirit then told him to get baptised. He ignored this voice and kept running, but the Devil met him in the form of a strong wind. Every time the wind almost blew him off the mountain, the Holy Spirit spoke and commanded him to be baptised. Three times this happened, and he knew in his heart that if he didn't obey this time, the next time, the Devil really would blow him off the mountain and he'd be surely killed! So, he did a U-Turn, running back the way he had come until he found a church. They were having a service, because it was a Sunday, and he told all the people there (about 30 souls) that he should be baptised immediately! Because this church placed a strong emphasis on Baptism (although my husband didn't know this), the arrangements began to be made. They had just installed a new water heater and it wasn't working properly, and so they were going to put the baptism off because it was Winter and the water was so cold. However, the Holy Spirit told my husband to say to them, "Did Jesus ask if the Jordan was warm enough, before John the Baptist baptised Him? They were amazed that he knew what they were discussing, and so agreed to baptise him, by full immersion, immediately! When they got in the water, it was freezing cold, but when my husband was baptised, the water began to boil! My husband just stood in the water, but it was so hot that the pastor (priest) and the attendants were compelled to get out! While this was happening, the Holy Spirit came on my husband, and he began speaking in a strange language, that he hadn't learned! He knew nothing about God other than he was called Jesus and his mother's name was Mary and hadn't heard of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, but this was a Pentecostal Church and so when they saw and heard these things, they all gave glory to God! My husband ended up doing many mighty works for God, and miracles, but it all began with a vision of a little boy, a little girl, and a little Lamb! P. S. All of these things happened many years before I met my husband, but one day, when we were out for a drive, we came across that little church, so we stopped and went in to visit it. The same Pastor was still there, he instantly recognised my husband and was able to verify the story, as it is written above. His name was Pastor MIchael and his fellowship met in the Dandenong Mountains, just outside of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I don't remember the exact name of the church, but it was something like "Revival Fellowship". I pray that God blesses you all!
