This video shows the steps involved with running our sheep flock through to be sheared.
We sheared 101 Ewes and 3 Rams today inside the coverall barn.
We hired Tyler Armstrong to shear the sheep flock this year. He has 10 years experience as a sheep shearer. It took approximately 4 minutes per Ewe to shear and he provided the handling system.

Additionally we had to handle the wool differently from last year mainly because of the quantity. Conveniently, he provided the bags for the wool to be packed into. We were so grateful for this for a few reasons. Mainly, it allowed us the opportunity to sell the wool and efficiently process it.
Sheep are sheared because they need a hair cut to prepare for the upcoming warmer weather. Their wool will continue to grow and would become to wooly and too warm for their well-being and comfort. Most sheep are unable to shed. If sheep go too long without being shorn, the wool can impede the ability to regulate their body temperature. We don’t want them over heating as Spring arrives.
Shearing improves the ability to keep a close eye on how they are developing entering into their third trimester of pregnancy. We are expecting lambing to begin one month from now.
Last year, 2020, we only had 20 Ewes to shear. This year, we increased the flock and continue to learn about sheep and shearing. It’s quite fascinating to watch the process and we hope you enjoy seeing how it’s done.
Sheep are sheared annually. Shearing Sheep requires skill and expertise. This is just another example of the multiple specialists that are becoming part of managing the sheep division of our farm operation.
