Thank you so much for providing this useful content to sheep and goat owners, especially for the newbies! We got our 8 St.Croix ewes in September last year (2022) and right away, I noticed one of them had bottle jaw (should have done more homework and done some fecals before purchasing!). The breeder did not worm at all - St.Croix supposed to be the most parasite resistant, and that was my plan too after listening to Greg Judy! On the advice of our vet, we dosed all 8 ewes with Valbazen and Cydectin together and then rechecked fecals 3 weeks later. They still showed signs of worms so followed up again with 3 wormers together (Valbazen, Cydectin and Prohibit) - 10 days later, fecals showed much better. I just rechecked the ewe that had bottle jaw (It's been 6 months) and her fecal showed a few barber pole eggs, the vet said he saw 2 eggs per slide view, and he suggested worming again or leaving them a few more months as it was not too bad right now. I did not want to get dependent on chemical wormers but it also does not make sense to just leave it, so the copper sulphate sounds like the perfect maintenance going forward!

I'm new to goats, coming from horses. It hasn't made sense to me to wait until the famacha checks indicate more severe anemia, rather than nipping it in the bud when there is a mild indication of anemia. The standard of waiting to worm until the anemia is more advanced seems to imply that the moderate worm load would diminish on it's own, but that has seemed unlikely to me. I appreciate the application of common sense that questions the standards when they don't make sense.

Great information! Could one go straight to copper sulfate with an animal that has great body condition, deep pink famacha but 900 EPG? The goat doesn't show any signs of illness or distress but the fecal came back kind of high... Previous owner used only Ivermectin.

In the PNW Valbazen has been a life saver. Barber pole worms are very prevalent here, and they've become semi-resistant to Ivermectin and completely resistant Cydectin. Ivermectin still kind of works at least. My mentor has also said that Prohibit (levamisole Hydrochloride) works as good or better than Valbazen here, but we haven't tried it yet. Many videos ago I mentioned on your video about IM injections, that it helped me greatly. That lamb that I needed help with had been treated with Cydectin before we got him, and it didn't kill jack all (and it wasn't just the P/O fault, we failed to check worm load, assuming he was treated (and like they say. Assuming makes an ass out of you and me)).. So when we gave him Ivermectin he got hit hard by the worming shock. What sucked, was this happened right as we got hit with a triple digit heat wave. Sadly, while he made it through the worming shock and was recovering (thanks largely by IM vitamin B shots, thanks again for that video), he didn't have the fight left in him to make it through the heat wave. Thankfully now, the farm we got him from has ditched Cydectin. Around the time our lamb had his issues, they ran into the same problem and adjusted course. I'll have to look into the copper sulfate. If we keep having these hot summers, the worms are only going to get worse.
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 3 года назад
Thanks for the response. Cydectin, in my opinion, is one of the most abused wormers on the market. To make matters worse, many producers started oral drenching the pour on cattle cydectin 5 years ago and destroyed its effectiveness. Cydectin actually used to be an “emergency” wormer and was only used for severe cases of worm loads nothing else would touch.

Having a mentor is always great, especially when you are working with someone who can show you the results. We are continually frightened by some of the information put out there and some of the reckless disregard for animal safety. Change is something that should be taken with a grain of salt and you should ALWAYS check the source to make sure they know what the heck they are talking about. Even we make mistakes. We do our best to provide current peer reviewed information but it’s still important to check information before instituting change which may be dangerous. With that being said, if you have time to thumb through the University of Kentucky study on copper sulfate worming, it’s got a lot of great information. uknowledge.uky.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1135&context=gradschool_theses

Can you advise on deworming a goat that is down... cannot even hold head up.... I have been told they cannot be dewormed in this condition. Just to treat for anemia. However, if i cannot treat it, how can I solve the problem? What would be my best course of action? Since you said Dectomax is gentle, and I do have that... can I give her a full dose and most likely not run into any problems?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 5 месяцев назад
If you are sure it is worms, you will have to worm her. While it is true that a goat in this condition can die from worming, if you don’t worm, it’s going to die as well. So, it’s a risk you don’t have much choice but to take. Treating for anemia while leaving the worm burden in place is just spinning your wheels. You can worm and provide support together. I would consider worming with Dectomax or Valbazen to start. Possibly a combination of the both. Reworm again in 7 days. Supportive care would be confinement with fresh water, hay, and grain. Injectable vitamin B, along with injectable iron. I would consider vitamin b daily as an IM injection at about 1ml per 25 pounds of body weight. I would consider 1ml iron as an IM injection at a rate of 1ml per 50 pounds of body weight once only. You can also add some molasses to the water to encourage drinking. The outcome is not promising, but it’s better than nothing at this point. If the animal cannot stand, you will more than likely have to oral drench her with water to keep her hydrated.

@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
Prohibit and Dectomax are not similar. Prohibit is a brand name for a deworming medication containing the active ingredient levamisole, commonly used to treat internal parasites in livestock and pets. Dectomax, on the other hand, is a brand name for a veterinary product that contains doramectin, used to treat and control various internal and external parasites in animals. While both are used in veterinary medicine, they have different active ingredients and purposes. I like the overall effectiveness of Dectomax and it seems to be a little more gentle while still doing the job. When it comes to plain old barberpole worm, they will both work. If treating anything external, prohibit just won’t work well. I also like injection meds like Dectomax. I can dose it more precisely and I know they are getting all of it. Haven’t had an animal spit out a shot yet. 😬

Tim so I noticed in one of your videos you had mentioned that if a sheep or goat has a massive worm load to treat with antibiotics with the deworming? Also giving a shot of high complex vitamin b? How many days do you recommend on giving the vitamin b shot consecutively?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 4 месяца назад
If you have an animal that is sick due to worms, the worming can sometimes take them out. We usually will give a single course of antibiotics as directed along with injectable iron and injectable b vitamin complex. The iron is usually given once. The b vitamin can be given up to once per day as needed. Excess b vitamins are cleared by the body through the urine. I wouldn’t go nuts but with a sick animal you can do once a day.

Ooof… yeah. I can imagine that would be a problem. I can only pass along to you what the clinical research shows. It appears, the 1% solution is key to giving them the protection without putting them at risk for increased copper exposure. I don’t know if there is a good work around for this and I wouldn’t want you to have any issues. The large bolus plays a role in providing enough surface area exposure to treat the worms as well… that’s the best info I can give you at this time. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Safeguard is a good wormer for GI parasites to include tape worms. For tape worms, this is one of your only choices (along with valbazen). For GI parasites other than tape worms, there are better medications. Safeguard doesn’t seem to work as well as it once did. Many folks are having to dose much higher than advised in order to see effective results.

Why not just give a smaller dose of copper sulfate to prevent working shock?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 7 месяцев назад
All drugs have a “therapeutic window” on one end of the window is the dose required to treat and on the other end of the window is a potentially lethal dose. We can use Tylenol as an example. Without reaching a certain dose, the effects are not strong enough to give pain relief. If too high of a dose is given, it can cause liver failure. The area between giving relief of a headache and causing harm is the therapeutic window. Some drugs are “safer” than others and have very large therapeutic windows. Some drugs are more dangerous and have very small therapeutic windows. Copper sulfate is a drug that has a very small therapeutic window. Copper sulfate works through direct action and contact with the worms. The dose needed to work is relatively close to the dose that would cause harm. Unfortunately, giving a sub-therapeutic level of copper sulfate would more than likely give no results as apposed to lesser results. Fair question. Thank you for asking.

Just now watching this video. Can I start copper sulfate after having used ivermectin or cydectin? Or do I need to use the dectomax and valbazen first?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 2 года назад
The main concern is giving copper sulfate to unwormed animals because the copper sulfate can be a bit strong if the animal has a large worm burden. If you feel the animal has been wormed and is relatively healthy, this is a good time to start your copper sulfate regiment. From that point forward, so long as you don’t let them get a heavy worm load, you should be able to stick to the copper sulfate. Now, if you should have one slip through the cracks and get bad on you, we would advise giving a more gentle wormer before jumping back to the copper sulfate.

Garlic does help with some specific worms but is difficult to control the exact dose. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of specific studies showing how well it works and for what specific parasites. The other problem with garlic is it’s blood thinning properties. Garlic is a moderately powerful blood thinner and needs to be respected in that regard. I would personally wait until she lambs and start your worming protocol then. Many large scale producers worm in the lambing jug. As a matter of fact a very large producer we just interviewed who gives a shot of Dectomax to his ewes the same day they lamb. If you start our protocol, I personally would stop the garlic.

@LinessaFarms 2 года назад
Hello and thanks for watching our videos. I have seen you show up recently and appreciate you taking the time to ask a question. You could safely start dosing them with the copper sulfate mixture immediately however there is no reason to do this. To answer your question appropriately, I will pose another question to you. If you can tolerate worming them with copper sulfate monthly, I would do so. If you just don’t feel that will work for you realistically on your farm you could do it every other month to every 3 months depending on how things are looking. Here are our thoughts: every month is about as excessive as we are willing to get. We look at any parasite as a burden on the animal and on our pocket book. When we are feeding our livestock, we want all that money to go into the animal and none to go to the parasites. Anything we can do to help boost feed conversion always helps. With our show lambs, we will worm them with copper sulfate every week. With our general flock, we worm with copper sulfate monthly. The great/best part about the copper sulfate is there is no resistance so you don’t have to worry about giving it too often. As you know, you could never get away with monthly worming with chemical wormers. So, that’s a long answer. The short answer is, worm them at least every 3 months and every month if you can. 😬

@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 2 года назад
Hello, Brittany and thank you for watching our videos. We appreciate you taking the time to ask a question. We would strongly encourage you to use the medication as directed. We get asked a lot of questions about changing the amount, concentration, and dosages. The amount of liquid and dosage concentration are both important factors when it comes to the medication working correctly. For instance, people ask a lot, can I just give the same amount of copper sulfate in a smaller dose (double the concentration). The large dose is annoying to many people. Unfortunately, the large volume is needed in order to wash the stomach and intestinal lining appropriately. We just go off what the university’s say they do and advise. We aren’t really qualified to change things up. Hopefully this helps. In the end, use the 50ml per head for the youngsters and the 100ml per head for the adults. If it’s too difficult to do it as advised, there are still some really good wormers out there that use different/smaller dosages.

More than likely you are dealing with coccidia. There is a chance it could be worms as well. If the poop is green/foul smelling, it could be ecoli. I have included a video for you to watch regarding coccidia. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0Ow1VQpQqfg.html

Hello, Waylinn. Unfortunately, this isn’t a good option for lice. While Dectomax can help treat lice and keds your best option is to stick with Cylence.

I’m sorry you’re having problems with worms. You may have an issue with re-infestation or you may have resistant worms. We do not advise copper sulfate for animals with a heavy worm load. If what you’re trying doesn’t seem to be working, I would try something else. I know that may not sound helpful but it’s the best I can offer at this time. You may need to try a completely different wormer. You may need to completely change out all the bedding in your areas, possibly change the way you’re feeding, take a look at the hay you’re feeding and where it’s coming from, etc… try to take a look at your methods and see if there is something you’re missing. Dectomax is usually pretty effective. Make sure you aren’t looking at a different parasite like lice, tape worms, etc…. Keep us posted.

You cannot use Valbazen on pregnant ewes or does. As far as copper sulfate is concerned there is no detectable absorption by the mom and therefore no meat or milk withdrawal time. Almost all chemical wormers have meat and milk withdrawal time, so anything other than the copper sulfate, you will have to research the specific medication. All manufacturers are required to list withdrawal times on the bottle or online.

No, we do not put it in their drinking water. We Included a link in the video where we discuss this. Copper sulfate is indeed used to control algae. It is also used in antibacterial medications, intra uterine devices, and as anti parasitic medication. It has lots of uses.Copper sulfate has been used effectively against parasites for hundreds of years. It fell out of use when pharmaceutical options came about. As stated in the video, it is not effective against tape worms. If you are up for a read, there was quite a lengthy university study discussing all of this. uknowledge.uky.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1135&context=gradschool_theses Please watch our other videos on copper sulfate worming and how to make your own. Hi, I am in Australia and enjoy your videos. I have read the paper on the copper sulfate solution and it seems to indicate that it is only effective on the Barbers Pole worm. Is it correct that it does not control the brown stomach worm or the black scour worm which are major problems here. Also, is this solution safe to use in standard drench guns, I use the NJ Phillips gun.
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 2 года назад
Hello Peter. Thanks for watching our videos. The study only looked at barbers pole worm but it is effective against all common stomach worms with the exception of tape worms. I use it in my drench gun with no problem. As long as your drench gun will handle the amount you need, you will be fine…. Or you will have to give multiple drenches. It has been my experience that the copper will slightly fall out of solution after it has been sitting for long periods of time. I give my mix a good shake often when using. I also have noticed it works really really well to the point if you have a sick animal with worms be very very cautious. I almost prefer to only give this as maintenance dosing. I have killed animals with severe worm loads.

Hey Peter, I'm in Australia, down in North East Victoria with a small farm running dairy goats and sheep - I offer free choice copper sulphate mixed with dolomite lime, elemental sulphur and seaweed meal as per Pat Coleby's recipe and have had no worm issues for 4 years. My animals also have access to high tannin browse from chestnut and wattle trees. Recipe is 1kg dolomite 160g copper sulphate 160g sulphur 160g seaweed meal (I use double seaweed) I also offer free choice bicarb and straight dolomite I then use mineral salt licks for goats and sheep separately Barber's pole is rife up here with a neighbour loosing 12 goats over the past 3 years despite heavy drench use I recently received a billy goat with a persistent black scour worm issue, he was drenched prior to arrival but I introduced him to the minerals and after a couple months he's come good with no signs of worm load in my girls (he was quarantined first). Hope that helps

Just feed your goats and sheep a mineral salt brick they get vital minerals and copper is added. Make sure you get the one that's good for both goats and sheep if you have both in the paddock. Too much copper can kill sheep.
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
Please don’t feed you sheep or goats block minerals. They are horrible on their teeth. Sheep and goats should have a free choice loose mineral when possible. The copper we are talking about in the video is not intended to be used as a nutritional form of copper and if given as we direct, it will not be absorbed at levels which are dangerous to sheep. If you have any questions regarding this, please refer to the University of Kentucky study we include in the video description.
