Getting Started with Sheep: With it being just a few weeks before we move to our new homestead we decided to go sheep shopping! We knew we wanted Katahdins and I was able to find a local shepherdess that raises them consistent with how we want to raise them.
We are just getting 4 rams this year since we are just starting out. No breeding stock yet...next year.
In this video we discuss what to look for when selecting sheep and why you should start with just feeders, not breeding stock. Also, the shepherdess demonstrates how to milk sheep.

This is great. I should have watched this before I jumped in with both feet to buying 4 ewes, and 2 lambs, 1 was pregnant

I'm enjoying being a sub and these sheep videos particularly interest me. Your advice feels sound and I'm hoping to learn more from you. We're planning to buy some farm acreage in about a year. One of my sons was in the Gulf War and is now very allergic to cow's milk but loves goat and especially sheep milk. So I knew I'd be getting sheep and wanted dairy sheep. I was excited to see this lady milk a Friesian! I believe you and her that it's best to be patient and not rush getting breeding stock right off. Good luck to your family and I'll be tuned in and excited to see your progress and how things develop!

Hi Sue! Thanks for the feedback! I have a bunch of sheep videos for you to watch :) I'm glad you liked the Friesian milking. There's another we did a few weeks ago on that.

And pause at 4:36 - 4:37, that sheep's eye is looking directly at us (the camera). I've wondered if when sheep look at us, their faces our also directly facing us, or if they're turned to the side a little (like 4:36) due to their eyes being more to sides of their face. And, I've read about sheep having a blind spot in the middle of their face due to so much space between their eyes,. It's like if sheep look straight ahead at a door with two walls on either sides of it, the sheep will only see the two walls because of their central blind spot, where of course we'd see the door and the walls. But, I'm not completely sure how true this is, and in other videos when seeing sheep look up at the camera, their faces are directly facing it

Katjo Daniels Hi Katjo. 😊 I'm thinking about buying three lambs to raise for the table. But I was wondering, what kind of things should you do to check if it's a good lamb to buy? like the training and the eyelid thing (which I'm still not to clear on) 😅 Thanks.

Ciara MacMahon I've haven't bought sheep yet, but The Grass-fed Homestead has a lot of great info about them. I think there's one called Body condition scoring? Good luck!

Can you talk about the economics of raising sheep? How much does a 55 lb sheep cost? (I had thought people want to raise small animals) How much weight do you take them to in what time?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 6 лет назад
There are so many variables to giving you answers to your questions. Very generally, for a homestead breed lamb, you can expect 40-60 lbs hanging weight by around 7 months old. For me, it cost me around $5/lb to raise the lambs because of the variables with which I am contending. Other folks have less than half the cost.

Why do you milk the ewe and then feed the lamb? Is it bad to let them nurse and then milk them? Or is it just an issue of germs?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
this lambs that get bottle-fed are ones that have either been rejected by the mother (she won't let her lamb nurse) or the mother had more lambs than she can support (4 lambs). The ewes that are high milk producers are milked and then it is given to the lambs that don't have access to their mother's milk

go to eat wild dot com or the livestock conservancy (or even CraigsList) and look for folks who breed sheep. They might have frozen colostrum

You should check their teeth to determine their age. You only need one ram for 50/60 ewes.

they are easier to manage, we enjoy their meat, and there is a better market for their meat than goat
