“There are no two puppies alike.” That brought tears to my eyes. It’s wonderful to find a video showing someone who has true mastery of their skill. Seeing an old master is a delight to the soul.
Really pleased to come across these videos. Ted was my Great Uncle but I only met him twice in the 1960s when he was at a sheep dog trial at Stanmer Park , Brighton and once at his home in Kent. It is very rewarding in exploring family history to have this video image of a relative born in 1911.
We have a very small 5 acre farm and used Ted's methods on two Border Collies. Both dogs learned fast, really fast, and when people watch us work the dogs they think we are professionals when actually it was our first time. No clickers and only whistle for lay down. RIP Ted your legacy lives on with You Tube. Many thanks to gazellefilms Maurice R Porter
To receive comments like this is truly uplifting, and really makes me glad that I managed to get this programme made towards the end of his (Ted's) life. I only hope that a certain editor of a certain magazine reads this, and now eats his own words of disparaging and reproachful criticism he made when I first put this out on video back in the 1990's. His agenda of trying to bury it for his own ends failed, proving what he and his cohorts were really all about. Time and the wwweb told on him.
@@gazellefilms Seeing this movie changed my thinking and set me off in a new direction at avery difficult time for me health-wise. Thank you for making it.
Love this....see.......a no nonsense approach to getting dogs obedience and respect...these days these bleeding hearts who think dogs are human babies and put clothes on them ...I have nothing but respect for these videos.....with love from Canada
Beautiful video. Not only is it set in the mystical realm of Kent, with a stone farm cottage and peaceful sheep in the fields, the master-dog relationship is amazing. I liked the down training using the foot on the lead method. It does not look cruel here, and the dogs respond as well as any professionally trained dogs. The positive training only people could learn from this. he seems a very nice, humble man, and you can always believe the dog.
Thanks so much for this series of training videos. Lovely farmer, great dogs . He has a kind and sensible way of training which anyone could learn from
So thankful for the recording of this fine old shepherd. I am sad that this seems to be all there is left of him. I would too that I could buy these recording in a DVD format. Would somewhere there was a biography of him. He and Pope Robertson's out print book: Anyone Can Do It , are the best I have found. Ted Hope I can tell was the best of the best.
This was put out on dvd around 15 years ago. Before that on vhs tape. A remaster for dvd is in the pipeline. Thank you for your positive comments, much appreciated.
Hi Ted - I rescue ill treated Border Collies & one of my dogs was so beaten & kicked that he was a nervous wreck it took me almost 2 years before he would come anywhere near me - I am used to Border Collies - love the breed so when poor old Kip collapsed & died in my garden aged 13 years old took me totally by surprise so I have now rescued another Border Collie that has been kicked in the mouth & also had a tail cut off so I am going to give her a great life - I have over an acre of land & at the bottom of my garden are woods - my oldest Border was Georgie almost 17 years old !!!!
Hi Susie, Thank you for sharing your story. You are a godsend, giving these wonderful intelligent dogs a new life, showing them love & kindness. Seeing them recovered from their mental & physical injuries is so rewarding. Need more like you In the world.
Gosh can't you see how old this is, just by the way he trains a lay down. Now a days you teach by putting a treat in your hand on the floor and getting them down this way. He reminds me very much of the Barbra Woodhouse method. Great video thanks for posting.
this guy is amazing i just inherited my grandmothers flock of sheep and well i need something to help me cause i just have so many issues with the current fenceing and protection of the sheep plus we need a dog in general this is perfect!
@1937irma I'm currently engaged In another project, but I do have more usable material (both film & stills) on Ted Hope. I will definitely be putting something together (for youtube) in the near future. The "Shepherds Life" Documentary will also be reposted In high definition. Thanks for your interest.
Really interesting video from 1996 thank you. My ancestors were Shepherds which made it even more interesting for me. I am now going to see if I can train my dog all the beginners steps while using the more modern science of clicker and lure training and conforming to the Progressive Reinforcement Training Manifesto.
The truth is, dogs have their unique way to think, and when you want to teach your dog advanced lessons and tricks, you ought to perceive the secrets behind their actions Watch here ==> plus.google.com/107984602498948672598/posts/ZndGCQHkPrj
@TheEvans1234 I'm certain you could get help from a trainer. I made the video under the guidance of Ted Hope, and as such am not qualified to give advice on sheepdog training. Sorry.
@Mrsevi7 Very true, I think there is alot to be learned from from the patience, dedication and skill of some of these older generation handlers/ trainers, and it is useualy the handler who needs training before the dog.
Im pretty sure Mr 'butt head'?,,,did say the dog needs toknow its general commands first and Im pretty sure you wouldnt have called him that ridiculous name to his face, so why do it on here?. Shame he isint still around, as he could have taught you a thing or two about basic manners.
