Today I show a bit of basic metal shaping. I'm new to all this, but it's still possible for me to form flat sheet into some simple shapes using basic tools. Most of these are cheap (or free) tools, some of which I made. this is not metal forging, but vaguely similar techniques still apply here. I think. But what do I know, you aren't reading this far anyway. I'm hungry. I'm gonna go eat some bacon and eggs.

Sand bag I used: amzn.to/3WS4Dga Similar Mallet: amzn.to/3Yb1eKn I made mine in this video from wood, but that's the one I use now. it's heavier and works better than the wood one. *these are affiliate links*

I'm one of the fools who polishes their hammer frequently... er... Anyhow, I occasionally do this sort of thing with silver for jewellery I make. Any imperfection in the hammer has to be sanded and buffed out later, and I'm lazy. With a polished hammer I can skip most of the sanding/polishing stages. But if you are after texture, a purposefully bumpy hammer is also a great piece of kit.

I think what you are doing is called "Sinking". Which is stretching. If you continue to work it in a way where the edges start coming to gather, that is "raising". Specifically "Synclastic Raising". Which at that point, shrinking would fit as a description.

Yea the stump hole has to b smooth in the bole or it will leave a crimp in the steel or aluminum it has to b as smooth as possible use a small air grinder with a small 2inch head and grind it all smooth in the bowl then oil it with wood preserve and it will b great.

I never got a metal shot bag. A lot of people like to use them on panels they're beating on to keep the noise down some. You just lay the bag onto the panel while you're working and it dampens the ringing. Some folks have a cut off bottom end of an old gas cylinder that they use as a stump. There's a dimple in there for bracing. But it isn't wood so you will stretch metal using it. I got loads of sheet metal bodywork tools. Hammers, dollies, slapping spoons. You can make a slapping spoon out of wood. People often leather face them too. You might like a slapper? You seem like a slap happy kind of a guy to me.
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage 5 лет назад
I've seen the leather covered slappers and some similar tools for working aluminum, definitely cool. If i had some aluminum sheet i'd play around with it some more, but that stuff ain't cheap. I have plenty of sheet steel but this wood mallet just isn't heavy enough.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 5 лет назад
I have a steel spoon. You could drill your mallet out and pour lead in it. Dunk it in water so it doesn't burn all up on you. Dunk after you pour, not before. Molten lead and water don't mix. Some computer cases are aluminum. You just have to keep your eyes open for good scrap.

Make a chest plate with the aluminum bronze. Or the tin bronze using Cu88%+Sn12% or try to recreate Orichalcum. I've used a different ratio and have tried to recreate it my self. Made a small knife. However I do not believe I got it correct. So ill give you the composition I made and see if you want to tinker with it. Fe 5%+ Ni 5%+Cu 55%+ Zn 35% + Pb 3% and a small amount of charcoal which was said to give it a carbon content making it stronger. But was unsure of the amount.

Doming a helmet in one piece is definitely an advanced project. Making the helmet with sectors individually domed is much easier. Then rivet the sectors to a frame of metal bands.

A little bit heavy on the exposition made it kinda hard to follow. Typically you do this thing where you show yourself actually using it and talking about it and it makes it much easier to track. Had to skip the first like 8 minutes, next time just talk about the thing while you're using it like you usually do, it's much more interesting and the listener has visual context to understand the things you're saying.
