Thank you for your request, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, for recorded information relating to the following:
In relation to Net Zero Buses
1. How many are there?
Four currently in service on the city centre connect through a contract with South Pennine Community Transport. A further 23 due to start operating in June 2024 on Stagecoach services 22x/221. A further 11
community transport electric vehicles also due in later this year. A successful bid for electric services between Sheffield and Derbyshire will see further electric buses in the coming years.
2. How much did they cost?
The four already in service cost £396,009 each. Stagecoach purchased the 23 vehicles, with contributions from SYMCA and DfT’s ZEBRA fund. These 23 vehicles are due to start in services soon. The community
transport buses are expected to cost £67,305 each.
3. How were they funded?
The City Connect buses were funded through ZEBRA and the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) fund. The 221/22x buses were funded by Stagecoach with contributions from ZEBRA and CRSTS.
The ZEBRA fund was the result of a successful bid to DfT. The business case is published here

4. How much does it cost to run them?
The cost of the contract with South Pennine Community Transport for the city centre shuttle service is £9,145.50 per week, funded by Sheffield City Council.
5. How many were stolen?
One was taken from Sheffield Interchange without the owner’s consent and later returned.
6. What was the cost of the damage?
The vehicles are leased to the operator who are managing the vehicle repairs with the manufacturer and
their insurance company. SYMCA does not hold information of damage or the repair costs.

8. Why am I seeing them drive past empty?
