Scotland St is at the bottom. The nightmare to cross it was created by the council. I worked here for 15 years and it was fine. They have created high levels of pollution by narrowing the road. There were crossings at strategic positions.
One of my favourite pubs, but I hate what has happened to that area. Jarvis Cocker used to go in The Broadfield, and The Washington, when it got trendy, he wouldn't have gone in The Fat Cat.
If I was still driving an older van I wouldn't go near the town centre or ring road. I don't drive now. Wickes have another store at the bottom of Rutland Road, this I believe is outside the charge zone, correct me if I'm wrong.
All that area was once full of cutlery and small tool businesses employing thousands of Sheffielder's, some of those jobs would be sneered at by the younger generation because they were in noisy and dirty environments, however many of those youngersters who now have a university degree have ended up doing low paid jobs in retail etc ... because there are not enough interesting and well paid jobs that require their specific qualifications. The manufacturing jobs that Sheffield was built on have mostly gone, and in their place the service industry jobs have grown, but typically, working on the phones in a call centre must be one of the worst jobs going IMHO!
Britain is being engineered on purpose to fail . All they want is Amazon with all the high street shops gone , everybody paying by card or probably social tokens shortly - absolute bastardry. Wonder what the lifespan of the cameras is? 🤔
I always thought the Wickes building was bad planning because it blocked off bottom of The Moor and the Manpower Ziggurat building which could have had a pleasant courtyard with the fountain. The artist's impression for the Hanging Gardens of Moorfoot shows all the buildings at the bottom of Moorfoot gone. This fits in with the Plan, however, apparently Wickes never recovered from lockdowns.
I agree building costs have gone up, but people still need to have the work done. People are scared of driving anywhere near Sheffield. I had to drive my dad in a few months ago for that reason.
@@timawells another reason could be there in no appeal to go into sheffield city centre. Parking costs, the buses arnt reliable have never been. Most if the shops are chains some decent coffee shops but honestly that's it
Last time I went to Sheffield I got a “you’ve been in a bus lane fine”. No idea where this bus lane I went in was because the roads are so confusing and so poorly marked. Sheffield council is a joke.
Unfortunately I don’t know Sheffield centre that well and I was just following sat nav to get to nhs building for wifes blood test. I know I got to bottom of parkway and at the roundabout took the third or fourth exit and went uphill into city centre.
A great video Tim, this brings back so many fond memories for me, my mum and dad was the steward and stewardess of the golf club for over 30 years, from 1973 onwards that was my home, I could tell you alot of stories about the house and park. I live in Dublin now but when i come back to Sheffield i always call into the golf club, its so sad to see the park and golf club in the condition its in now knowing what it used to be like.
@@timawells Spent many a time as a child on the boating lake, the conker trees at the side of the lake used to be a big attraction during conker season. If you Google William Jeffcock Dunmoyle there is an article that shows a house built in Northern Ireland that is a mirror image of the house built by William Jeffcock, now the golf club. I believe Williams daughter married over there and they built the house, now sadly demolished 👍
It desperately needs some greenery outside of it. A row of planters or something, though they’d probably get used for storing discarded fags and crisp packets
Thanks Dave, My family came out of Sheffield in 66, live in Anston 45 years, Dinnington 10 and Sheffield 5 years. But in Sheffield most weekends and worked in the centre for 15 years.
I love the Fat Cat, I had my first pint in there in 1981, seems a very long time ago. Sheffield was full of industry of all sizes, from little mesters to massive heavy engineering, and absoulty everything in between. Every form of hand tool was also made in Sheffield. I remember when "Made in Sheffield" really was what it said. I also remember cutlery being imported, finished in Sheffield and having the title Made in Sheffield added. Sad times.
I used to work in the Neepsend area, from the late 1970's to the late 1980's. I used to have a pint sometimes during lunch at the Gardeners Rest! Happy times, but the work was hard aswell. Despite having a quick pint, I still have all my body parts.
Let's just think about this. Sheffield used to be known for being one of the cleanest cities in europe for it's air. We now have vehicles with catalytic convertors on and DPF filters which makes things even cleaner. So why on earth are they trying to charge people for a clean air zone when they already have it,it's just total bollocks. I can't ever remember them having a clean air zone and issuing fines when all the heavy industry was on the go but now they do,it's a total con. The whole system lies about everything. The other thing i have noticed when you see these cameras either static or mobile they are never actually on the PUBLIC ROAD, always off the road on a grass verge or something,is this due to all police authorities being a registered company and therefore actually doing business on a PUBLIC ROAD would be illegal, just a thought that's all.
@@timawells Just one other thing i would like to mention then i'll shut up 😀. Have you noticed they now ask you when applying for motor insurance who is the Keeper of the vehicle and who is the Owner of the vehicle. It is totally impossible as a private individual to be both,if you Own the vehicle why would you be keeping it for somebody and if you are the Keeper of the vehicle you cannot be the owner because you are keeping it for somebody or someone. The only reason they only used to ask if you are the Keeper is because you have registered your vehicle with the DVLA and therefore you are no longer the owner and are keeping it for them, and if you remember some years ago they used to have adverts on television showing cars being towed away and i think crushed because you hadn't paid the road tax on THEIR vehicle NOT YOURS,if you had been the OWNER they couldn't have done that it would have been illegal. Check out OWNER and KEEPER in the English Dictionary. It's all slight of hand with this lot they just never stop Rant over 🙏
@@timawells I recall the Nazi road building programme of the 1930s. They made buildings near the motorways to look old/rustic. However petrol stations were made to look 'futuristic'. We are sadly stuck with the legacy of the bad-designers these days. I detest these new blocks they are leaving in our deserted town scapes.
