I used to work in Hillsborough and lived in the surrounding area and it's not like it was Tim. I'm looking forward to the Wadsley Bridge video. I had a corner shop there years ago.
I did the football ground Myra. My Gt Grand parents lived on Winster Rd. The whole are around there looks run down. It looked to me as though a girl was touting for business, I hope I was wrong. Best Tim
in the 70s I lived on regent court flats and then on burgourne Rd and it was a good place to live with a corner terrace house which was a pub a herbalist shop which selt pure sasperrella drink and other drinks nice little shops restaurants Chinese takeaways all sorts but now it's gone alot pubs have gone on Langsett Rd I could go on as to what was there but it would take to long
In the 70's one of those shops in Langsett Road, at 0-36, was called Jack's Temperance Bar and sold sarsaparilla (a kind of root beer I think). The building set back from the road at 3-33 and which is now a restaurant was originally the site of the Phoenix Theatre; when the theatre closed the site became the Phoenix Service Station and later Maplins, the electronics company (whatever happened to them) The river at 11-13 is the River Loxley, not the Don; the Don flows under Leppings Lane, behind the South Stand at SWFC and then parallel with Penistone Road towards town. Holme Lane - yes, Towsure is still there on the left at the far end and the Tramways Medical Centre, 14-06, occupies the site of the former Sheffield Corporation tram shed. Back at Hillsborough Corner, you're correct, Subway, 17-42, was originally Burtons Tailors with Timpsons shoe shop on the opposite corner. Woolworths was on Middlewood Road, where Savers and Heron Foods are now, 22-03. Nice one Tim, looking forward to Wadsley Bridge.
I'm not sure Hillsborough Corner, as a shopping place, ever really recovered from the extensive, prolonged and deafeningly loud disruption caused when the tram tracks were being laid in the mid-90s. It was sad to see so many shops with the shutters down on a Friday/Saturday as shoppers were put off by the deafening noise of the diggers, dirt and barriers everywhere. As shops closed because of lack of customers charity shops replaced them and even now there are eleven charity shops at Hillsborough: 3 large ones on Bradfield Road, 3 in Hillsborough Barracks and 5 on Middlewood Road. Having said that, I still like Hillsborough with its social mix and much interesting architecture and buildings. In that sense, it's so much better than the glut of awful, soulless buildings - particularly student accommodation - which now seem to be everywhere in and around Sheffield City Centre. Well another excellent and fascinating video. These are deceptively simple yet so interesting that I hope, in years and decades to come, that they come to be seen as a valuable historical record of contemporary Sheffield life.
My Gt grandparents lived next to the football ground, would have loved her house but it fell into the Don. I have an Aunty and cousin still living at Wadsley bridge.
It's always been busy with traffic, but the trams and all the street clutter that it brings make it feel more chaotic. It's also even busier now as it makes up part of the rat run around the city for euro 5/4 commercial vehicles due to the CAZ, you can see them everywhere in the video. If you compare it to when you was down the bottom end of Langsett/ Infirmary road where it was now derelict there weren't really any driving past. Vans are the backbone of local economies and good indicator of how much business is going on. The arrogance of Sheffield city council thinking they could charge people into travel to work in the city. Like having a entry charge to have a pint in Wetherspoons.
@@timawells there's still a Poundland in the barracks but smaller ..I only knew the one in bradfield rd had closed when I thought I'd have a look in it ..too late 😂
Poundland on Bradfield Road only lasted for a few months, looked terrible, miss the old Wilko's that was there before. Quite like Hillsborough shopping though. Don't live too far from there myself.
