Exploration by dinghy the deep part of Megatron a Victorian storm drain under the city of Sheffield. Information on a World War 2 bomb, and information on by homemade flashgun. A bit scary at times but a great explore.
😲 unbelievable! I cannot believe you paddled up there in an aged dingy you had in your loft 😂 I lived in Sheffield for 10 years (studying & working) and I’d never seen photos never mind a video of that underground area. Fascinating, but there’s no way I’d go down there on my own 😂. All power to you, Pat. Stay out of bother ya mad man. 👍
T 1 out & about Hi yes amazing place under the streets of Sheffield, glad we did ,not throw the dinghy out brought back into service after many years in the loft. Great explore, not sure where I will be going next, thanks for your comments and watching, Pat
I used to do a spot of caving with my old chum 'Richard' back in the days when I was fit and able. Richard was one of the finest men to ever walk this earth and a keen caver for many years. I'm 61 now and physically buggered. We did a few places like this but we concentrated mainly on the Coniston Copper Mines. It was a wonderful subterranean world that I'm proud to have entered. I was always shit scared but my Beloved was not, and used to thrill at abseiling down mine shafts and prussicing back up again. Thanks for doing your wonderful videos Patrick. I am with you in spirit, but sadly not in person. Take care and enjoy the subterranean world.
Mo Hartley yes I agree More such a amazing price of Victorian engineering over 150 years old been down several times ,still amazes me each time, thanks for comments and watching, Pat
Truly awesome video's of Megatron, Patrick. I am totally mesmerized by you. You are an awesome guy. Thanks for taking us to parts of the city nobody ventures, apart from the few. Total and utter respect to you.
joesophie90 Much appreciated those comments my friend, a truly awesome place hidden from view. I have a few more culverts and drains to explore next few months they are such amazing but hidden places, all the best Pat
Glenn UK Hi Glenn yes it was so interesting did not mind putting time and effort in enjoyable in many ways and I learnt a lot. The WW2 bomb is all assumption but seems to fit the evidence I found, makes a interesting story as well, thanks for your comments and watching Pat
Does appear to be a German bomb, doesn't it? I for one would have felt pretty safe under there, during that air-raid; and how wrong I would have been! I really must make that visit to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, I've been promising myself; if only to see and hear the last Lanc in Britain!
Thanks really appreciate your comments, must admit it scares me a bit when I looked at it again, but was a great adventure thanks again, all the best Pat
Hi Patrick. I have only just discovered your videos and I must say I find you such a class and fascinating explorer full of knowledge. Great videos and stay safe.
"Not that you would ever know" there is a dinghy on his back (Says the man with dual oars sticking up behind his head like elephant ears). Oh, mate.....that made me laugh out loud and then direct in to a coughing fit! Thanks for the joy, mate!
Well, well, well, Just come across these vids. Great. Very well put together, very informative. Lived in Sheffield 60+ years. Never seen owt like this. Well Done 👍
Hi Majkey, got to have a bit of humour don,t like to be serious at the end the explores, camps and videos are all for fun, thanks for your comments Pat
Hey Pat, Fraser again. Great vid again, what a piece of engineering. Just watching with my son waiting for NY. I see this vids a few years old but... great to see it. Thanks again. Happy new year. 😀
Hi Fraser, certainly a adventure this one, but it was a challenge I had to do to complete this Megatron explore, amazing that this is all under the streets of Sheffield, all the best Pat
I’m getting addicted to these videos. Give this man a series on the bbc, informative and fascinating the world beneath our feet. Could be the underground Fred Dibner !! Keep up the brilliant work and I hope people realise what effort and passion it takes to make these brill films.
Brilliant! Of course. Have only just discovered this website a few days ago and can wait to watch them all. When you said "If I just tug on the anchor a bit I can move on a little" at the end of the weer I actually shouted "No" at the telly. fantastic photography. Loved the one that looked like an eye. Great stuff. Now, what shall I watch next..........
Hi and thanks for the comments, when I filmed this all I wanted to do was find out what was down at the far end, nobody seemed to know, it was a bit of a adventure but knew if anything went wrong could probably swim out the other end. When I look at it know it does scare me a bit, floating down an underground river in a holiday dinghy towards a 8 foot weir, scary, but it all worked out well and made a great vidio, all the best Pat
Excellent video and show of nerve haha! The shrapnel damage is amazing to see what history we have and 90% has been covered up or lied about. Thanks for showing us all of this.
Hi Ray certainly a awesome place, great explore and to say I do not like water keep me on dry land any day but some times you,ve just got to go that bit further, all the best Pat
Absolutely Fantastic, I would have probably looked at those marks on the wall and never realised they were WW II bomb damage. Brilliant you pointed that out. Another captivating video 👍
Martin Zero Hi Martin always had a interest of WW2 and when I saw shrapnel marks researched it and saw the map of the bombs dropped right at the entrance. Certainly added something extra to the explore, thanks for comments Pat
Crafty Veggie Hi Steve yes it's amazing what's under the city, I first ventured under the railway station then ventured further each time, this was just the last bit out into the Don, not sure we're I ,am going next, thanks for comments all the best Pat
These videos are just fantastic. You're a great personality and the love you have for making these videos clearly shows! Thanks for blessing us with these pictures and videos!
Patrick, may I just say that your beautiful solo work of exploring this hidden treasure was brilliant. And hopefully your great photos and videos will be archived to record such National unseen treasures. Hats off to you friend 👍
Aquafina Spring Water Hi I ,am quite happy to have no lions and alligators I certainly would not be down there if we did, nice and peaceful down there like you say, all the best Pat
Isle Wild Roamer It’s too cold: The average water temperatures in the UK are below the optimum for Crocodiles. Not low enough to kill them, but low enough to make them slow and docile. It gets cold in Florida too, and crocodiles get around this by going into a kind of hibernation mode where they breathe less, their hearts beat slower and they don’t move or eat much. They can survive the winter like this, but they would eventually die.
Rhys Tomos Raccoons can survive in the UK. They are not dangerous, but are a pest for home owners and campers. Snakes, bears, wolves and panthers can survive there too.
When I saw your golden angel's wings in the first few seconds, with the ominous siren in the background, I thought: "No no no!!! Too soon, too soon!!!" This is a truly fascinating exploration series, and well produced. The images you create are outstandingly good and deserve to be on display in an art museum. Your presentation and pacing is superb. Thank you, Pat, for taking us along with you into this spooky subterranean civic treasure.
Hi Harold, this was a scary one but had to do it. Water is not my favourite environment especially in a old holiday dingy but it was worth it floating under the streets of Sheffield, and the very strange looks I kept getting, all the best Pat
Peadar caenloch hi Peadar really enjoyed making these exploring videos, the culverts are magnificent prices of Victorian Engineering, thanks for comments and watching Pat
There’s probably a good few people watching and thinking “that dee dars gone ga ga”! I happen to find your explorations pretty fascinating so you keep paddling around in that little yellow dinghy Patrick. Tha’ gets my vote 👍
Pat, thas a flippin LEGEND!!! No flippin fear and no flips given about rules and regulations. Bloody brilliant!!! I want to come for a pint aar kid !!!!! 😊
If we had stayed, I would most likely speak the same. Thanks for sharing this about Sheffield. Here in North America, those walls would be covered with colourful paintings.
Awesome echo down there - really great idea going in with the anchored dinghy. We really enjoyed the stunning photography - thanks for sharing your experience with us Pat. You have such an adventurous spirit. Cheers mate! Well done :)
Amazing pat, such and interesting and very informative video, really enjoyed watching that one, like all videos, class....ps hope u r having fun in ur wee pub, its so cool!!
Thanks Pat , that was absolutely fascinating , your braver than me , so interesting to see whats beneath our cities , thanks for all the time and effort that must have taken
Fernando Chavez yes you would not believe that a magnificent price of Victorian Engineering is hidden under the streets of our city of Sheffield, all the best Pat
Another cracking video Pat, I love your still photographs, they really bring out the detail in the magnificent underground stone and brickwork that's normally bathed in darkness. You're one of a very few who even know all that exists. Great stuff!
Hi Chris some of the stills were taken with electronic flash like from the dinghy for ease and convenience. A lot off the others were from light painting and the detail is fantastic, can,t believe it myself when i put them on the computer, thanks for comments and watching Pat
Another brilliant exploration Pat! Thanks for letting us see this amazing part of the city. I'd love to take a metal detector down there - maybe pick up a couple of pieces of shrapnel if there was any left! Looking forward to the next video, cheers Pat!
Nigel Dance Hi Nigel nice to hear from Ontario, amazing place under the streets of Sheffield and so few people know it's there, thanks for watching Pat
Hi Pat, Very brave adventure, more so on your own. Although logically you had to project stills instead of video, the commentry was spot on. I enjoyed the final sequence set to music. Also tracking down the map of the bomb sites to the actual roof of the culvert, great detective work!! Good luck from Spain!!
Hi David, scares me a bit when I look at this, floating under a city in children's dingy, but some times the quest for adventure can lead you astray. My parents and Grandparents lived through the Sheffield Blitz so always had a interest in how the city coped in the war years..... thanks Pat
Brilliant mate I was born In Sheffield but thankfully got a Barnsley accent :-) Its great you bringing all this stuff to the locals never mind anyone else. I never knew we had all this under the Steel city.
@@patrickdickinson6492 Hy Pat... thanks for the reply. Dont let anything scare you buddy. All you have to do is be carefull & you will be fine. But listen to your instincts if they say don't go there or don't do that, listen to them and obay what they say and you should be safe as its them who guide and gaurd us. Keep on doing what you enjoy doing mate. Best of luck my friend im looking 4ward to more of you amazing photos & video's. Jim.
I would of loved to have been there with you Pat ,it’s a work of art ,that no one realises is underfoot walking on the streets .you have the same Heath Robinson approach as me .class photography as ever .love your RU-vid videos Marra 👍👍
man you really got some balls going down there, amaizing how the adventure spirit drives some people to go to dangerous places. Keep up the adventures, but try to be carefull
Superb work again, an all action masterpiece as Sheffield’s answer to Indiana Jones! Heart in the mouth moment on the weir edge, in a 12 year old blow up dinghy where the results could have been very different. Awesome indeed! :-) Silhouette shots of you are just brilliant. Determination, persistence, planning and hard graft make for excellent viewing and as you say for posterity. Thanks very much.
Steve Timmiss Hi Steve and thanks for those kind comments, it was a great explore and I surprised myself with the photos, thanks again and all the best Pat
I have just stumbled upon your videos and think they're absolutely excellent. Well done for getting out there being a bit crazy and bringing us these fascinating places.👍
I’ve watched this video several times and it never ceases to amaze me. I assume that section of roof you spoke about the council removing never happened? Thanks for doing these videos Patrick.
Hi Ashley, no nothing on opening up the culvert, I think that Sheffield City Council will only do anything when it collapsed, Sheaf and Porter river trust also mentioned about a viewing window at the railway station , but nothing on that as well........ thanks Pat
Hi yes I surprised myself when I first saw photos on the computer, its the light painting ones that show the fantastic detail, thanks for comments and watching Pat
Pat you are making history great photography. Another world of great craftsmanship hidden from view well worth exploring well done pat and thanks for sharing . Love your videos look forward to more all the best.
Richard Preston Hi Richard very kind words, I really enjoy exploring places like these, magnificent feats of construction hidden from our view, and so many photo opertunities, thanks again , Pat
a little review, this is such gold, Pat. beauty in the under. Here's why you're possibly more immune to corona v's a little more than most. Nobody hardly goes into the storm sewers. ~Malc...
Brave fellow Pat....especially running the gauntlet with the famous and legendary Megatrocodile lurking in the misty depths of subterranean Sheffield. As always, thoroughly entertaining and interesting though. Particularly impressive were the stills showing the ceilings reflected in the water. Great stuff, thanks for sharing
I did wonder what might be lurking in there, any strange noise and I would spin round with my torch just in case something was stalking me, the reflections were amazing thanks for comments and watching Pat
Awesome Patrick, would love to go have a look down some of those tunnels sometime. Really enjoyed this (like we did your last one on it too) so thanks for sharing. You did a top job and made a really interesting video on it. All the best, Gareth&Zoe Wildcamps
Gareth & Zoe Wildcamps Hi Gareth and Zoe, supposed to be wild camping but I find a bit of exploring interesting and something a little different. The filming and photography gives different but interesting challenges but once you have mastered it the videos are a pleasure and fairly straight forward, no people down there, no rain, no wind time to do a few retakes when you need it up. I have saved some places to explore for winter as it's somewhere to go in bad weather conditions. Would not go down in storm conditions though. Thanks for comments and watching, always look forward to your videos, all the best Pat
Hi Gail yes it always amazes me the detail that come out with light painting, might take 5 mins a photo and 2 or 3 goes but worth it in the end for just one good picture, thanks for the kind comments, Pat
Great Adventure, I had a similar little boat and your video reminded me of the time I 'sailed' with my umbrella into the middle of the Myall lakes in New South Wales, Australia. Nothing like being a small vessel in a giant ocean!
Fergus Stevenson Hi Fergus, yes this was a great explore, difficult to find anywhere better, most of the photos were taken with light painting which gave great results, thanks Pat
Brilliant. Love Pat's blasé nature in these segways (when it's not blasé at all lol)... "right I'll just go down this 40ft hole, wade half a mile underground bent double... and I'll see you in bit!"
@@patrickdickinson6492 wow. Thanks for the reply, wish you all the best Pat. Great production value these vids! Have you got a drone? I can imagine a guy like you getting some epic shots with a decent drone. There are some pretty cool second hand ones now like the mavic pro or the dji spark for compact use but not as many settings. The mavic pro is so stable its capable of long exposure when hovering and the cameras are getting pretty advanced now!
Thanks, really appreciate your comments, was a bit of a adrenaline run this, but felt amazing especially when back on dry land, sometimes just got to go for it, thanks Pat
Hi Rodger its certainly lasted well like the railways, we will never see this type of construction again, just throw it up now, thanks for comments Pat
Oh Pat ! You made me laugh mate , but WHAT an interesting video ! You certainly have captured history ! I haven’t got the bottle to paddle meself across a swimming pool ! Your imagination running wild about crocodiles !!😂😂😂 Mine would be telling me there’s a U-Boat and crew down there and they DON’T know the Wars over!! Great entertainment Pat, well done mate
Thanks Robert, this was a amazing adventure, but the water had a eerie feeling about it, who knows what might live down there, luckly the adrenaline kept me going, all the best Pat
Hi Pat I find your videos brilliant and well done and it's lovely to see your exploration tours. Thank you for sharing keep up the good work, this is the same thing I did in my younger day and would love to share my experiences with you. Many thanks
Thanks David, this is the most amazing place I,be been and to think it's been under my home city for all that time. You refer to your younger days and I thought of know what you mean, I,am getting a bit older now time is flying by and my energy and fitness are not what they were, nice to talk to you Pat
Hi Patrick. I was with you all the way as ever on this one. A real historic adventure, informative and adrenaline mix.. like a journey to the centre of the earth!.. Very creative and amazing photography and loved the home made mega flash bulb gun. Interesting shrapnel find.. was thinking they would have made great air raid shelters until that point. Look forward to your next urban or country adventure, ARB Stephen.
Stephen Turnock Hi Stephen you described just right, a journey to the centre of the earth and that is what it felt like. Some of the photos look like it was at the centre of the earth, amazing place just under the streets of Sheffield. Hope to be out wild camping again soon, all the best Pat
Thanks Nell and Robin, yes this was a bit of a adventure, it does sort of scares me a bit when I look at the video, but I had to see what was down there thanks for watching Pat
I had no idea about theses tunels. Absolutely fascinating. I guess it creates complications for some of the new building around the city, but then if there's will.....
