Sheila McIlraith's mother, Minnie Burford McArthur, was a talented woman. She had her degree in English, turned to nursing when she lost a close friend in World War I, became one of the first public health nurses in Toronto, all the time serving as organist and choir master at High Park Baptist Church. In 1925, at age 37, she married a doctor, Archibald McArthur. They lived at 594 Sherbourne St. just north of The Selby Hotel, a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemingway.
As a public health nurse, Minnie worked at Annette and Runnymede Public schools.
Sheila passed away in August, 2022. We thank her for spending time with us and for recording some of her many stories.
