Shelly Yakus Interview - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro 

Hi Friends, Shelly Yakus was one of my childhood heroes growing up in England. He was part of many of my favourite records, including John Lennon´s "Mind Games", Blue Oyster Cult´s "Don´t Fear The Reaper" and more. After studying Shelly´s records for years, I moved to L.A. and was fortunate enough to be introduced to Shelly by Jack Douglas. I found an amazing down to earth, passionate, and incredibly gifted mentor in Shelly. In today´s video I have the pleasure of interviewing Shelly and pick his brain about the making of of great records - which he has recorded and mixed PLENTY! - recording techniques, production advice, songwriting and more. Warren I have to say it again that you are such an inspiration and I've turned on as many people to your channel as possible. To me you have helped me so much and I love your videos and you seem like such a genuine and great guy! I'm proud of what I have achieved in music even though I'm not famous. I'm a lead/rhythm guitarist, bassist, Drummer, keys, songwriter, engineer producer but can't sing argh lol and I'm super proud of what I've done in my music career from 13 to now I'm 44 and as my home studio is finally professional and have some amazing gear and started a small label. I also love teaching guitar and bass and I want to thank you for you for being my RU-vid teacher so to say on so many different recording ideas and techniques. Please keep the produce like a pro going which I'm signing up next week and the videos coming as they are the best on RU-vid imo. yes, when shelly talks about being done at the end of a mix, i know what he means !! when you become consumed with the song and the only thing that pleases you during this time is gettin that song csounding roght. . you listen and tune and tweek for so many hours you definately need a holiday from the song afterwards. ha. my neighbours said one time when i was mixing a vocal over a few days / weeks (ha) that she will kill me if i ever play that again. ha, i thought bit harsh but i knew what she meant, and i thought to myself, you dont even know how much i didnt want to play that a million times over but sometimes you have to to get that perfect mix or close enuff to it until you stop looping one that one sylebel for like the trillionth time : P much love to the mixers that are dedicated to the songs ! ; ) cheers shelly ! its a wonderfull night for a moondance. x

maybe have some of these key producer's have a segment on your show with mastering tips , really hands on it could lead to something big , it's vary interesting learning the in and outs and history on sessions and mixing ideas, and information that some of us may not get a chance to know but thanks to you we have the chance to hear or see things that may have just went over our head , but now leads to movement to generate more bands , beats , and talent to get a chance to bring it to that next level, and interns generates more work for individuals as yourself and others , and as we lure your tips or trucks it makes your mixing and mastering easier, I know no mix is the same but the basic guidelines could be , if taught the right way this is one of my more favorable interviews because he had a lot of History and was vary humble and wanting and willing to help the little guy to maybe get them to that next level, can't wait to see the tour of the studio when it's done ,, keep up the good work .

Reminds me of when I was making drum loops and the mullti-track on a hard drive didn't survive the send through the post. But someone had also recorded everything on an old Sony DAT 2 track field recorder. I managed to use that instead. Just eq-ed it and sort of slammed it through a Chandler limiter. Brand new Zener at the time. Tweaked it around and it magically channeled the natural room reverb to the snare. The eq and limiter were the only equipment I owned, so I didn't have much choice. Or ask for the money to do it all over again....lol. Anyway, they never knew the difference.

man i stumbled on the perfect room to test my low end drones. My daughters tiny concrete walled bedroom with my old logitech Z4 pc speakers. it has a big (for pc) sub/avi and the verb speaks to me. i thought my mix was bad but then i played a professional song which had drone to but less and tiny amount of silence mine was constant (just) then bang i thought its the room perfect 😊 i love happy acciendents... oh and my sub is on top of her draws about 4 ish feet so lots of verb. very clever of me to set that up hahahaha

always great to listen in to all your interviews, just a thought for future talks, could you talk a bit about how certain preamps are used to shape certain sounds. for instance i have heard you talk about using an API to round the top end on guitar. Its things like this i think many people would find interesting as this perhaps isnt a normal approach within a home studio. I'm assuming this kind of thing is used in a summing way post, i may be wrong?

I could spend all morning listening to Shelly talk. Case in point: I just did :) p.s. is it just me or is the audio a bit sparkly on this one?

When I've overdosed on too much tech learning, agonised over things too much and maybe even lost touch with some level of humanity in my dedicated quest to get things 'right', I'll pop along here to watch and listen, because I know it's going to be put in context, and a human context at that. and I just might (always do!) pick up some wee gem, a nugget of insight that just opens up an enhanced view that makes moving forward possible

First, this was a super deluxe interview with one of the industry's pioneers. Second, I just sampled ProMaster. There is no way anyone can beat the price or quality. Cost has been the number one reason I've not had my own music mastered; I've just been trying to mix better to not need that final step (honestly, that hasn't worked). I believe I have just found my mastering engineer! Thank you Warren for this great interview, and thank you Shelly for what you have one for all of us!!

You need to do more interviews like this one which seems to focus in more on the man's philosophy on the recording process. Very few specifics and I like how he gets tight-lipped when pressed for which artist did a certain thing that was an unusual procedure.

I've adopted a few of Shelly's tricks like putting things through line amps. They work!
