RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #34: SHELTON
Shelton - “Shelf Farm”
This week in Rushcliffe we’re taking a look at one of the seven villages in the country with the name of Shelton. Three of them are in Bedfordshire, there’s one in Norfolk, one in Shropshire, one in Staffordshire and this one, located just North of Thoroton in the Eastern reaches of Southern Nottinghamshire. Of the seven, this one couldn’t be much more linear if it tried. Almost the entire village is based around one central road .
Its another village dominated economically by farming, and the surrounding land is of a high grade agriculturally. This pretty rural hamlet with just over 100 residents but it has a slightly different feel to the other attractive local villages we’ve visited. The countryside doesn't surround it ... it forms part of it. In the summertime its not uncommon to see golden fields of newly cut wheat, and other fields teeming with livestock. Its certainly a verdant little place.
For the genealogists out there, two names are important here Warburton and Wright. One of the Warburton family members - a staunch Civil War Royalist - is buried in the church here. The Wrights lived at Shelton Hall, and had connections to Italy.
We’ll learn about them both, and a bit more too, as we wander through another lovely little Nottinghamshire village! Lets go.
